Posted June 16, 200717 yr Hello friendly people! I am currently translating a show (Man's Work) from English to Swedish. There is one episode where the main character has to manage a football team for a week. He doesn't really know what he's doing, of course... There are, however, a few football terms I am not so familiar with and I need your help. If someone can give me definitions of the following terns, that'd be fantastic! Thanks so much in advance! keep it to ground play it to feet six-pointer (i thought you could only get a maximum of three points in a football match?) set pieces (about certain players?)

Thanks so much in advance! keep it to ground play it to feet six-pointer (i thought you could only get a maximum of three points in a football match?) set pieces (about certain players?) keep it to ground This will mean keep the ball on the ground instead of playing a long ball game where the ball is often kickedhigh into the air - it normally refers to a short passing game play it to feet - Pretty much as it sounds - it is an instruction to players to pass the ball to the feet of your team mate rather than just kicking it upfield hopefully six-pointer (i thought you could only get a maximum of three points in a football match?) - Yes you can only get 3 points but this refers to a game were two teams are playing each other and they are close in terms of league positions, especially if they are battling against relegation or fighting for the league. Why they call it a 6 pointer is because of the impact winning or losing would have - if say you are equal on points and you win you would go three points clear of your rival, if you lose you would be three points behind, therefore the range is 6 points. set pieces (about certain players?) - set pieces are corners, free kicks and throw ins. i.e a point in the game where one team can 'carry out' a move without the opposition being able to tackle them. IN return can you explain what on earth Abba were going on about in Chiquitita
June 16, 200717 yr Clearly their love for Tesco and Indian food Loz, do you not listen to the lyrics?
June 16, 200717 yr Author Thanks for your most valuable definitions! Really appreciate it! As far as ABBA's Chiquitita.... hmmm... I'll have to ask them about that one! LOL
June 16, 200717 yr Author I think it's about a bird that died... Chiquitita, tell me what?s wrong You?re enchained by your own sorrow In your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow How I hate to see you like this There is no way you can deny it I can see that you?re oh so sad, so quiet Chiquitita, tell me the truth I?m a shoulder you can cry on Your best friend, I?m the one you must rely on You were always sure of yourself Now I see you?ve broken a feather I hope we can patch it up together Chiquitita, you and I know How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they?re leaving You?ll be dancing once again and the pain will end You will have no time for grieving Chiquitita, you and I cry But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you Let me hear you sing once more like you did before Sing a new song, chiquitita Try once more like you did before Sing a new song, chiquitita So the walls came tumbling down And your love?s a blown out candle All is gone and it seems too hard to handle Chiquitita, tell me the truth There is no way you can deny it I see that you?re oh so sad, so quiet Chiquitita, you and I know How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they?re leaving You?ll be dancing once again and the pain will end You will have no time for grieving Chiquitita, you and I cry But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you Let me hear you sing once more like you did before Sing a new song, chiquitita Try once more like you did before Sing a new song, chiquitita Try once more like you did before Sing a new song, chiquitita
June 16, 200717 yr About a bird that died eh - must be the Swedish equivalent of 'Who killed Cock Robin'
June 16, 200717 yr keep it to groundplay it to feet six-pointer (i thought you could only get a maximum of three points in a football match?) set pieces (about certain players?) Great. A quick course in English-Swedish Set pieces = Fasta situationer Six-pointer = Sexpo?ngare Not sure about the rest.
June 16, 200717 yr Author Thanks, Moos! I figured the "fasta situationer" out from Loz description... Here's another one though... "dead ball specialists"? keep it to ground play it to feet six-pointer (i thought you could only get a maximum of three points in a football match?) set pieces (about certain players?) Great. A quick course in English-Swedish Set pieces = Fasta situationer Six-pointer = Sexpo?ngare Not sure about the rest.
June 16, 200717 yr Sexpo?ngare - that sounds like something illicit being performed on an Ikea chair and dead ball specialists are basically players who specialise in taking free kicks or corners - i.e. Gianfranco Zola or David Beckham
June 16, 200717 yr Dead ball specialists: Necrophilian prostitutes Sorry, I'm not sure how to translate dead ball specialists but you have the right description from Loz anyway. En slags specialist p? fasta situationer kan man v?l s?ga.
June 16, 200717 yr Happy birthday - and what are you doing to celebrate, dare I ask? Off chasing chubbies again?
June 17, 200717 yr Thanks Loz and Lofty. No, no chasing for me. Getting to old for those kind of things I've just spent my birthday being with some neighbours (10 of them) at my summerplace. We started off by eating some cake together at one o'clock and then, at five o'clock my parents and I went to a neighbour (who was at our place earlier this day eating my cake) and had some dinner with them and the other neighbours because the lady of the house turned 80 in april (I think it was). So lots of food and booze there (though I stuck to drinking coca cola ). Came home at eleven o'clock or shortly after that and then I had some ice cream while watching Blackadder on my computer I went up at nine o'clock in the morning so I've been up for like 19 hours now. I'm really quite tired I'm also slightly pi**ed off since my brothers forgot my birthday, as usual. The only one who wished me a happy birthday was my sister and she admitted to have almost forgot it. It's not easy being the youngest Anyway, I'm going to bed now. Gotta get up early tomorrow. I got some plants for my birthday so I'll have to put them into the ground and make sure they're well.
June 18, 200717 yr It's not easy being the youngest I know all about that Moos. I'm the youngest of four girls, and to give an example of how insignificant that makes you: there's hardly a photo of me around! Millions of my eldest sisters of course, but after them the novelty obviously wore off. Strange, because the pictures that do exist show an extremely cute girl . Oh and a belated happy birthday

Oh and a belated happy birthday Thanks, Val. Nice to see someone understand what it's like being the youngest. I always wanted to get a little brother but that never happened. I even suggested adoption but my dad want to. As the youngest one you really need to work harder than everybody else to get noticed.
June 18, 200717 yr Set pieces - something once carefully practised by Chelsea that used to produce a high proportion of goals. Now something routinely squandered by Frank Lampard.
