Hi everyone, Watford fan here. I'm sure you've all heard about Al Bangura's deportation story, and I know that 99% of football fans are united in support of him, so here's the link to the main petition that's going to be handed to the Home Office.

Thank's a lot to anyone that signs.

It's an interesting story. The human part of me (and surely most of us) would love to see a happy ending to the story whereas the rational side of me would like the story to be presented by the media in a more matter of fact way rather than in a red top attention seeking way.

By this I mean that I acknowledge totally the heartache the poor kid (and he is just a kid) must be going through and anyone who can't feel that must have a heart of stone however I don't think it would be appropriate for him to be allowed to stay purely on the grounds that he happens to be good at football and thus he is receiving signs of public support above and beyond what other people in exactly the same position as him would receive.

I can't think of one good reason why he shouldn't be allowed to stay. The whole thing's a farce. If he was homeless and sponging of the state then fine, but he's not. He has a full time job with a professional football team - well Watford, but you know what I mean - Personally I think it is bureaucracy gone mad.

Try concentrating on something important instead I say.

I totally agree. There is no good reason why this kid should not be allowed to stay in the country.

it amazes me that they have a problem considering all the numpties they let in who end up begging on the tube while living in paid for houses and sky tv

back to the original statement: I think that the entire VISA processes are a farce; this is something close to my heart having been deported from the USA even after studying, thus contributing to their economy. Having worked whilest studying, then worked full time after studying, never claimed any benefit, never got in trouble Then some tosser who signed a visa for me ups and leaves. new bloke comes in, thinks I am doing a good job so wants to keep me on...immigration say "sorry mate, gotta go..you've got 30 days to elave the country!"

I had to sell EVERYTHING I owned, give away clothes (could only bring back 2 cases), give away a tonne of other things. Then re-applied for a new visa to try and come back to my OLD job....and I was denied.

Sorry, to turn this into an "all about me" post. But I feel this kids pain!!! They should look at each case individually, see what the person has or has not contributed to society, and decide. All regular health and background checks should still be done.

Tried my best Lfty but the only one I could answer was number 3. I think you are holding up 17 fingers!

Am I right? What's my prize?

Close enough I'm not telling how many of those fingers (if any) are mine though.

Your prize: a night out with that well known Shed End forum poster Jamie Carragher at a venue to be decided by Gibeon Baar, paid for by Rossi24.

A nice dignified night out then, probably robbing one or another of the dippers first team whilst they are away on yet another "Great Anfield European Night" (copyright ITV scum).

Asylum is about the 'need' for protection. This guy can now return as the country has stabilised.

Whether or not he pays taxes has nothing to do with the terms of the 1952 convention relating to refugee status.

The point is NOT that everyone should be allowed to come in and after a while those earning the most can stay in a sort of 'land grab'.

He will easily get a WP anyway no no biggy, but he should not be granted asylum just because he is a footballer or because he pays bigger taxes than the norm.

I think you're missing the point here. Al Bangura didn't come here seeking asylum, he escaped after being kidnapped, and from there made a life for himself. The initial agreement was that he could stay until he reached 18. And that is the only reason why he is being considered for deportation. I agree that having a comparitively high public profile isn't reason enough on it's own to allow someone to stay. However, neither is it adequate reason for sticking to the letter of the law. My feeling is that a complete unknown with similar circumstances should also be allowed to stay, and in fact, Al Bangura's case, should his appeal be successful, could well be used as a legal precedent.

He came here and made a claim. At which point Sierra Leone was in flux so he was given 4 years 'leave to remain'. Trust me, I know the subject.

It's all about protection, but criminals can be deported as an undesirable...IF it is safe to return the person.

So yes to a Russian being deported, but unlikely for a Somali or someone from Dafur...even a pedo or rapist, drug dealer etc.

Them's the rules. 317.gif

  • 4 weeks later...

As I predicted. Otherwise he would have just gone to play in France on a free.

Was refused asylum but granted a work permit.

It's by the numbers. icon_wink.gif
