WV2 Blue Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Ken Bates Has A Pop Now.... When he was chairman...i thought "love or hate him, you can't ignore him" even now, after dragging Leeds through the court's,Ken Bates can still find the time to have a pop at Chelsea. Reported in todays Sun...(who just love to write anything about Chelsea, good, bad or average, especially in the last 18 months...glorified Manc fanzine!!! ) Steven Howard, Chief sports writer reported: FORMER Chelsea chairman Ken Bates last night asked the question on everyone’s lips: Who in their right mind would want to be the next Chelsea manager? Bates, who had over 20 years at Stamford Bridge, has watched in astonishment as the search for Avram Grant’s successor has led from blind alley to cul-de-sac. As AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti embarrassingly snubbed Blues’ billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, Bates said: “I understand Abramovich went to Ancelotti to get his opinion on who the next boss should be and was furnished with two names — Frank Rijkaard and Roberto Mancini. “What does he do? He offers the job to Ancelotti himself. Either he knows what he’s doing or he doesn’t. And I know where my money lies. “In fact, the basic problem with Chelsea is that they have an owner who doesn’t know anything about football. Peter Kenyon doesn't know football “And he, in turn, surrounds himself with lackeys who know precious little themselves. “What do people like Bruce Buck, Peter Kenyon, and Eugene Tenenbaum REALLY know about the game? “And that is what makes the job impossible. After the way Chelsea have treated their last three managers, why should anyone want the job? “Regardless of whether you agree Grant should have been appointed in the first place, he still went within a missed penalty of winning the Champions League and within a whisker of winning the Premier League himself. “If Alex Ferguson had gone that close, I somehow doubt he would have been rewarded with the sack. “All the talk would have been about him coming back bigger and stronger. "How United had complete faith in his ability, what a magnificent effort it had been and how the club were proud of the enormous efforts put in by both manager and players. “Grant took over at an extremely difficult time, steadied the ship and won 15 and drew six of his last 21 league games. “Well, you can’t do much better than that. They always say this is a results-orientated business. “And when they sack people, you always hear the words, ‘In the end, he went because of his recent record’. So how do Chelsea explain that one away? “But then this is the way they act these days. This is the way they run the club. “After what happened to Claudio Ranieri, Jose Mourinho and now Grant, is it any surprise they are finding it difficult appointing their next manager?” Bates, now chairman at Leeds United, added: ‘Most of the old backroom staff have been pushed out as well. “You could hardly have got a better coach than Mourinho — look at all the cups and titles he won. “And even he wasn’t good enough for them. Incredible. “I have a lot of sympathy for the fans and the players I still know at the club. “And what I’m saying here is more in sorrow than in anger. “I may be at Leeds now but when you have a second child, you don’t stop loving the first. “Stories about the way the club is run and what goes on behind the scenes will be well known by the leading European clubs and the managers who were once in the frame. “I’m not saying people like Ancelotti will have been scared off because they are big enough and ugly enough to look after themselves. “But they will ask themselves: ‘Why should I get involved? The way Chelsea behave, who needs it?’ Bates sold his Chelsea stake to Abramovich for £18million in July 2003 after 21 years in charge, And he said: “The club I once knew has become a cold- hearted husk of what it was. “Sure, the johnny-come-lately fans will be delighted with all the trophies. “But the real supporters, the ones I know and respect, hate the fact that this is not their club any more. “The most important thing any club can have — its soul — has been rooted out and destroyed. You can say whatever you like about Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. “But they generally know how to treat people — and they know what being a big club is all about. Chelsea don’t. “And then we come to Peter Kenyon, a man who was kept in check by Ferguson when he was at Old Trafford. “When I saw him lead the team up to collect their losers’ medals in Moscow, I thought exactly the same as I did when I saw him running with the Olympic flame. “Here is a man who is so thick-skinned, he doesn’t understand the effect of some of the things he does. Bobby Charlton is one of the greatest ambassadors football has known. “Yet when he received his winners’ medal, he was so embarrassed he stuffed it in his back pocket. “Kenyon went up as if he had won something. Everyone just cringed. “And yet what is happening to the old Chelsea fans — me included — is tragic. “Yes, they will find another manager, someone will take the Russian rouble. “And, like Grant, he will get a four-year contract. And, when he fails to deliver, he will go the same way. “And even the new Chelsea fans will be left asking, ‘What the f*** is going on?’” And all this from a bloke who sacked Luca 5 games into the 2000/01 season. source:http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/article1247227.ece
dkw Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 i admire what he did when he saved the club, but what a f**king hypocirite he is. walking about the history of the club even though he banned our greatest players from the club.
Lady Diehard Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Aw, come on, lads - Batesy is allowed his Sour Grapes. He's Chairman of effing Leeds! Think anyone's going to listen to you Batesy?
just Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Batesy. Loz, please can we have a "Kenyon Out, Uncle Ken in" emoticon? Dreamland I know, but Imagine where we'd be if Roman and Ken had formed a workable partnership. Roman's money coupled with Batesy's football savvy and love of Chelsea.
mad_mac Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Oh dear, Just, I admire the thought, but if we are to believe that Roman and Jose had clashes of ego's, can you imagine the Ego's of Ken and Roman?
Mod Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 “After what happened to Claudio Ranieri, Jose Mourinho and now Grant, is it any surprise they are finding it difficult appointing their next manager?” I find it interesting he never mentioned any manager previous to that?
callista Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I understand why people are having a pop at Bates but forget for a second (if that's possible!) that this is Bates - if you read it cold discounting the author what he's saying is pretty much the truth for the most part about how this club is seen regarding its treatment of managers.
TomP Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 The fact that it is Bates makes it all a bit hypocritcal though. I think that there are actually some interesting similarities between Roman and Bates. They both, in their own way, saved the club financially. They both brought success to the club that seemed out of reach before they arrived. But, the management style of both of them mean that they were always managed to get on the wrong side of fans through their actions, and I'm not sure either of them could be regarded as a popular figure.
snitrbt25 Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 There's actually good chunks of that which is accurate but like any Bates rant it also has a lot of hypocrisy intertwined with bitterness.
Tim W Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 “I have a lot of sympathy for the fans and the players I still know at the club. Would these be the same fans he tried to electrocute?
BLUENUT Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I thought the artical made some fair points, alot of it has already been said on these forums. You can say what you like about Bates but he know's how to run a football club.
Guest Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 You can say what you like about Bates but he know's how to RUIN a football club. Fixed ur post
BLUENUT Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 You can say what you like about Bates but he know's how to RUIN a football club. Fixed ur post I knew someone would do that He saved us with the whole Marlour estates affair and has done a decent enought job at Leeds so far. I know he can be a cantankerous old git, but the problems at Leeds were created by Risdale not old Ken! Bate's Leeds narrowly missed promotion last season with a 17 point deduction - he's hardly ruined them.
dkw Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 i will forever be thankful to bates for saving chelsea. but, he did almost go full circle and ruin chelsea. make no mistake, chelsea football club were on the edge of a disastrous financial black hole, and bates had to look for a saviour. luckily for us roman arrived in his chariot made of gold and rebuilt the club into what it is now. a magnificent stadiium, incredible training facilities and one of the top clubs in europe.
BLUENUT Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 the stadium was down to Bates but so was the hotel at the expense of a larger capacity
dkw Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 like i said bluenut, bates was god and devil to the club.
TheWestwayWonder Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 You know, some of his words might be exactly how we are feeling, but all he is doing is slandering the club to grab a petty headline. I dont buy a word of this utter horsesh*t about "when you have a second child, you dont stop loving the first" or "what I say is more out of misery than anger". What a load of garbage. If he cares about this club so much, why does he stoop to the same line as the journos about "johnny come lately" fans? Its one thing to say this as a dedicated fan of Chelsea or someone working in the club. Then he is one of us. But when he leaves the club, he should be supportive and not critical if he really cares. I think Kenyon is a farking bar steward myself, but Bates sounds like a manc the way he talks, "look at bobby charlton, etc" He did some great things for this club, but in the end he was an irrational hothead who made terrible fiscal and personel decisions. And Roman came along and saved this club's hide when it nearly bit the big one because of Batsey. Well I think old Ken cant swallow that pill, or the fact that blues Cannonized Matthew Harding and just laugh at old Batsey. Either he knows what he’s doing or he doesn’t. And I know where my money lies. Too bad most of the club's money lies in a hotel attached to the Shed End because of him. Really knew what you were doing there, eh Batsey?
bonetti Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 “I have a lot of sympathy for the fans and the players I still know at the club. Would these be the same fans he tried to electrocute? He never turned it on

Tea Bar Boy Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Bates was never shy about getting rid of a good manger Guillt , Vialli made me laugh the Grant quote ????????
Portugeezer Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Batesy. Loz, please can we have a "Kenyon Out, Uncle Ken in" emoticon? Dreamland I know, but Imagine where we'd be if Roman and Ken had formed a workable partnership. Roman's money coupled with Batesy's football savvy and love of Chelsea. Have to agree!!

dkw Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Maybe the stadium was there, but you cant argue the other points i made. and building the stadium, along with the hotel, almost killed the club. the training facilities were dreadful, the acadamy almost non-existent.
