Pauly
We are trying. oh how we are trying. Our problem, however, seems to that we are stumbling over which incompetencies to integrate into the psyche first. Should we go with the build up of the heralds of the loser (hard but fair, fair play, fair go fair elbow?), or should we first build a media so insular that we don't even need to watch what is happening in the world to figure out that we are certainly the best. We are working on the subversion of the meaning of "we". When we say "We are so f**king hot, just look at our league" we really need to learn how to use the word we despite having a total of 7 englishmen in the league 3 of whom are francis jeffers... and having not had an englishman win the top scorers medal since... shearer? and how to supress a smile at the same time... We are working so hard to have the god given unquestionable assumption that john terry is definitely, without question the best center back in the world and should anyone question it they be immediately held ridiculous as we plummit to yet another tame embarrassment.. The second best goalkeeper in the world and the world's best ever striker ever.

Pauly
looks like all that trying has succeeded...a shi*e performance followed by a woeful defeat on pens...perhaps england and italy aren't that different after all?! just about 4 matches and actually qualifying twatty! Woeful performance? without captain and two best players... wasn't so bad to lose on penalties to spain and qualify from the group of death... but i guess you'd know all about that from your perch! In any case, i anticipate with eagerness another one line from you...

It's a fair point, I mean look at Turkey, eight players out, 65 minutes into the game, 1-1 and giving Germany a bit of a spanking throughout! I think you are over egging the fact you were missing Pirlo, Gattuso and Cannavaro. Whilst I accept they are big losses, it isn't as if you were having to call up youth players to replace them. The players coming in were seasoned professionals and I thought it smacked of Donadono having absolutely no faith in them that he played for 0-0 from the kick off. Having said all that I still think they defended superbly and I still think England fans have no place criticising anyone in this tournament!! We were diabolical in qualifying and should just be humble!!

I accept we were/are cr*p, I just think there are teams who can be just as unconvinicing but have a knack of still getting through...Germany in the final is another example...Italians always go on about how special their football is when let's be honest, they rarely impress apart, from as a defensive unit

They have ample replacement for Cannavaro, but the perenially-underrated yet superb Pirlo will be sorely missed from any team, and they're going to be missing some grit and force if Gattuso is missing.
