He's a natural goal scorer and he'd be cheap, great buy.

However he spends more times on the sidelines, bad buy.

I honestly believe the reason he gets so many injuries is because St. James' Park is played on granite rather than clay - making the ground harder and it doesn't give anything in terms of way.

Still, I doubt it'll happen.

I'm so bored with us getting linked to Owen over the past few seasons.

It would be a gamble and would probably turn out to be VERY frustrating for all concerned. "if owen can stay fit "......

That's just it - he won't - he never has done. It would be Robben all over again.

I know we need a goal scorer but we need one we can rely on. Lets stick with Di Santo and give him some decent playing time.

agreed

we'll never know how good he is or can be whilst he's sitting on the bench

having owen in the squad di santo could learn a lot from him though

It's a big no from me, infact it's a massive no from me. As stated, we have Di Santo chomping at the bit, if we bring in an over the hill, injury prone ex international player, pay him 5 times as much as Di Santo and relegate the young lad back to the resrves, then there is something seriously wrong.

Always been a fan of Owen. A great striker when fit.

Forget Di Santo, its Anelka that needs striker school. :stretcher:

God help us

Exactly. Just when I was sniggering this morning reading about Robben being out for 6 weeks again...

Oh please! I don't want to see any flow of traffic in Juanuary, Di Santo can't be much worse then Anelka if given 90 minutes to play (hoping to see him start against Burnley).

Di Santo can't be much worse than Anelka is a true enough statement but not likely a truth that will win us the CL or Prem this term...

A striker is a real need for us to sustain a realistic challenge in those two competitions and although we have Drogba hopefully on his way back and a promising Di Santo we are

one of the favourites for these competitions and with no one knowing what form-mood-or fitness level we can expect from Drogba or how good Di Santos can be we are basically

relying on Anelka to get the goals that we need against the standard of teams we will meet in the latter stages of the CL,

that to me looks like being a possible transition period where we come close as we have the ability in the squad to bully the lesser teams but are still short of top quality up front.

I dont know if owen would be a good buy with the obvious concerns over his proneness to injury but I think if the purse strings here are tight as we are led to believe and we could get him cheap, he would be nice to have coming off the bench even on odd occasions like the Roma game.

I dont know what other choices will be availlable to Scolari for the sort of money Owen would cost but I doubt they would have his ability.

Cheers

there is a huge difference in what it would cost to buy Owen and what it would cost to pay him (in comparison to Di Santo)

I make you right but there is a huge difference in the prize money between winning or runners up in the CL to quarter finalists or winning the Prem to runners up...

I dont know if owen could make the difference but at the reported £60000 a week plus playing bonus, used sparingly if he done well he could work out actuallly earning the club money.

Chippy, the last comment from the last sentence sums up Owen for me and 2 words in particular "if" and "could" he demands to much money for those words to be used when discussing a signing that would be bought to score goals.

I share your fear mate but I also harbour a fear that if we buy nobody and Drogs turns out to be the Drogs we all know he could be we are left with a player who should be learning by getting 15 or 20 minutes at the end of games we are winning at every opportunity...something that is not happening in Scolaris team and an injury to Anelka would be a season wrecking event if our hopes for Di Santo are a bit too high,

I feel if the cost of a player is a stumbling block and £4 mill would give us another option, then regardless of his wage at this point in the season and in the position the team is in, having seen our striking options and having thought about other possible targets....Owen to me would be worth a punt.

I can understand peoples reservations fully.

How about Heskey? he's looking for a move.

not a goal scoring machine but contributes alot to the team.

I dont know what he would cost but Heskey for me is more a player to play alongside Anelka and at this moment I would prefer someone to replace him if it wasn't going for him.

So he could replace Malouda and/or Anelka.

So he could replace Malouda and/or Anelka.

I wouldn't be wanting Heskey leading the line for us as a lone striker or head of a 4-3-3, he just is never gonna be prolific enough for a club with our ambitions,

the other option at times would likely be good but leaves us again with the same main striker options, I feel we need an Owen type player more than a Heskey type myself.

On a pay as you play contract it could work, but Owen would never go for that. To buy him and pay him £60k p/w is rediculous, the man is rarely fit.

We do need a new striker but we need a top striker that we can rely on, one to replace Anelka without getting in the way of any opportunities that Di Santo might get. If with Anelka (or another) in front of him, he still doesn't get any chances it means the manager thinks he's not ready and if that's the case we shouldn't be relying on him.

Have to agree with you (about Heskey) there, just pulled a name out of the bag as an alternative to Owen.

Lets try some other alternatives.

Bellamy.

Bent.

Yakubu

Defoe.
