Paddie goes to cov

Featured Replies

Dutch left back patrick van aanholt has gone to coventry on loan until january. be interesting to see how he does, looked a good propsepct in the ressies at times, and i seem to remember hes been on the first team bench once or twice. cov are on sky on sunday i think so we might get to see him then.

how many is that now?

Is there a definate programe for all this? or are we simply geeting as much playing time for fringe and youth players?

I cant help but feel that there is a clearance of sorts taking place.

why exactly? this is pretty much what every top team has done for years. its the first time in a long time we have decent young players to send out on loan, i dont see why this has to mean we are getting rid of them. nice pessemism though....

It's not pessimism, it's an opinion, made on my obsercations of recent sales and laon deals with regards to the fringe and youth players.

Is that ok?

not really no. bigger clubs have loaned young players down the league for as long as i can remember, yet we do it and suddenly it means were having a clear out? i dont really understand why you thought that.

did we sell him?

Dunno. Not really sure what became of him. I had high hopes for him at one time, even thought he'd be good enough to captain England if he kept his focus.

When we're loaning out our youngsters we're simply saying...look, kid, we know you got talent but we're not sure. You ain't no Messi to get into our first team right away. Show us what you got in the Prem and Championship or after a couple more chances its good bye.

for anyone interested, van aanholt starts for cov today and its live on sky.

I just watched Coventry - Ipswich on SS2, and Van Aanholt was very convincing. Quick, good in the air and some good decision making under pressure. He might have to work on his distribution a bit, but I was very pleased with what I saw. One of the better players on the pitch.

"Not really no".

Are you having a laugh. It's my opinion, and one that does not need your approval.

all clubs send young players on loan all the time, its to get them experience. or are all clubs having mass clear outs then...

mass clear out? who suggested such a thing?

My point is this, finally, we have sold/sent out more young fringe players than previous years (not considering any other club in my post).

and the question was/is........."is there a definate programe". which does not dismiss the possibility that they have been sold/loaned for other reasons than a clear out.

I think there IS a definate programme going on here.

We have invested a serious amount of money in youth development since Roman arrived, and we are yet to have any kind of return on this investment.

One of the main reasons for this is that it is (in my opinion) IMPOSSIBLE for players like Van Arnhold, Sinclair, Stoch or anyone else to make the jump directly from reserve football to Premiership/Champion's League. The difference in the standard of football is much too big. Our managers of the last few seasons have shown that they would rather play experienced players out of position than take a gamble on youngsters from the reserves.

For these youngsters, playing reserve football and a few minutes in the Carling Cup is never going to produce players who are in any way shape or form ready for the Chelsea first team.

I think the new policy is to loan out any player who is showing a bit of promise. In previous years, we have only loaned out the very best and kept the rest in the reserves. This season it looks like everyone is being farmed out.

I think this is the best way to go. Let's see what these youngsters can do under the pressure of real match conditions. Thats the easiest way to work out whether they are ever going to be good enough to be part of the first team setup.

What we have to remember is that the vast majority of the players we loan out won't make it. But at least if they do reasonably well on loan, it puts them in the shop window. We might be able to sell them and get a bit of return on our investment, rather than releasing players on a free like we have in the past.

TomP,

I think your observations may prove to be correct. Lokking at it logically, I suppose it makes sense to send them out in order to have a look at how they perform week in week out in real playing conditions.

Very true. Even Man Utd loaned out a certain David Beckham before he broke through the ranks. Don't think he ever made it though

So we have Stoch, Van Aarnholt, Sinclair, Sahar (or is he officially sold?), Di Santo and Mellis all out on loan, and all players that were close to making the first team (well, they'd played a few games here and there, and made the bench).

I think this is a perfect opportunity for our ressie coaches to keep an eye on them, and I'm sure there will be scouts, and even Arnesen at a few of their matches too, in order to see how they'll perform.

It wouldn't suprise me to see Hutchinson loaned out too. What I do like, is that a lot of these loans seem to be until January only. If they go away, perform well, we have the ACN coming up, then we could recall one or two and then extend the rest till the end of the season before we make any kind of permanent decision

Scott

Add Lee Sawyer, Mancienne, and Bertrand to the mix, and I realise now that Sahar has gone officially.

JT went on loan once

Totally different era Geezer. Totally different set of priorities now. If JT was a young lad coming through the ranks the now, in the Abramovich era, he would never get the chance to stake a claim for a regular first team place.

Never in a million years.

I think your being a bit pessimistic, just.

I think the reason that we have't developed any youngsters since JT is that we haven't had anyone anywhere near his quality come through the youth system in the last 5 years.

If JT was coming through the ranks now, he would have a harder time - no question. He would probably have to go through several loan spells at places like Blackburn or Wolves before getting a shot at the first team. But I think the cream rises to the top, and if he did well on loan, then he would be brought back to Chelsea, and would get a shot at the first team.

Take Mancienne - if he is a nailed on starter for Wolves this season and sures up their defence (lets say he makes the same impression that Hangeland did a Fulham last season), then I have no doubts that we will make room in the squad for him next season, and he will get his chance.

But - if he has a mediocre season for Wolves, and can't hold down a starting place, then he doesn't deserve a chance.

Yes - the bar is now higher for youth players, but I have no doubts that if any of these youngsters out on loan at the moment are JT-standard, then they will make it. Unfortunately for the rest of the youngsters who will never be JT-class, they won't get a shot at the first team. Maybe 10 years ago, they might have, but that is the price of our success if you ask me.
