Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager
A new manager is better than any player we've signed or potentially could sign under Todd's ownership. Would be a lot cheaper too.

However very few managers have had a decade of their teams failing to score goals regularly or win games like Potter has. That doesn't mean he's going to turn it around. I like the Eddie Howe comparison. Eddie Howe wasn't gifted a top job like Potter because he did well at Bournemouth. He took over a Newcastle team that was rock bottom and through his astute management quickly turned the team around, he didn't need new signings and he didn't need time it was immediately clear what he was trying to do and how he wanted Newcastle to play and they steadily improved before compounding that improvement with smart signings. Newcastle are in the top 4 now but they're there because they hired a manager who improved the team to that level. When Howe walked in they were the worst team in the league. He's everything Potter isn't and Howes mere existence and his record at Newcastle shows just how poor a job Potter is doing with us. Graham Hodgson was gifted a top job he'd never shown anything in his career that he deserved a shot at on the back of a single top half finish, has spent a kings ransom and gas managed nearly 2 thirds of a season worth of games with the team averaging less than a goal a game and going backwards. If Newcastle brought in Potter last season instead of Howe and he replicated the results he's had here with them they'd have gone down and that's with Potter having a squad that Howe could only dream of. The whole argument that Potter isn't the worst manager to ever manage a big club seems to be based on ignoring everything Potter has actually done here and just pretending he could be like one of the hundreds of better managers than him if given an endless amount of time and money.

They say they are, which is why it's strange they'd hire a managerial as statistically abysmal as Potter. Think Potter has a lot more in common with Hodgson, Nuno and Moyes rather than Arteta but perhaps he's the next 1 in 1000 shot and not the near certain dud he looked from day 1.

The media have always bigged up young English talent generally before turning on them as they fail to live up to the expectation. They've always had a soft spot for Potter as well. By every conceivable metric he did a much worse job at Brighton than Pulis did at Stoke and at 47 he isn't even particularly young but they way he's been span as this young top class manager destined for a top club despite none of his teams ever scoring often or winning many games has been especially strange. Would anyone really argue that we'd have hired Potter if he wasn't English? Just feels like Boehly came in and hired the guy who was the media flavour of the month rather than actually picking a top coach.

Marc Cucurella
I don't want to judge Marc too harshly it's his first season and he's achieved something no other player in history has done and that is look like a top class player playing under Graham Potter, was by far Brightons best player last season and earned a move to a big club unlike his gaffer. He's been poor. Very poor but he's playing under the same terrible coach in a team that's struggling. I don't think we should give up on him yet even if he's been poor and may lose his place to Chilwell. He's better than what we've seen from him so far that's for sure.

The media don't want Potter to be questioned. If they hate us it's in their best interest to try to keep pressure off him.

Think Potter just wanted a low scoring draw against a top half team. Still think he's a bit puzzled he isn't getting praised for results like this like he was last season.

Welcome Hakim Ziyech
Shame he went to PSG We really missed his creativity today.

I'm a statistician and it's not like it's hard to find. What's more disconcerting is how the media talked up a guy who's team scored 42 goals last year as being some incredible coach even when his own supporters were booing him. https://www.google.com/amp/s/talksport.com/football/991359/perplexed-graham-potter-booing-brighton-leeds/amp/ Never got the Potter love in, I watched a lot of Brighton and just didn't get why he'd even be on a shortlist for a big club. English manager effect in full force.

Brighton wouldn't take him back 🤣

That was actually fairly average for Potters Brighton. Went 5 games without scoring 4 separate times in his tenure.

Potter isn't a manager you hire for a transition. He's a manager you hire to lower expectations as you decline.

Typical Potter. The players don't matter when the manager is so out of his depth.

Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager
As I was saying to a mate before kickoff I can't get excited about signings like Enzo and Mudryk even though they're fantastic talents that are huge upgrades on what we have because I honestly don't think the players matter. They're not Messi, Mbappe or Neymar and I don't think Potter could have PSG in a title race so why would I expect results here? Great players for the next manager who will hopefully have a good pre season so we can do something next year but no team will ever consistently score goals or win games with Potter at the helm. His career shows that.

We were above them before Potter came in.

Chelsea v Fulham (PL) Fri 3rd Feb 2023 20:00 GMT
I don't understand why people expect improvement given his results with us have been the best results of his career. It's not like he needs time to implement his methods, 1 win a month and 2 or 3 goals a month is what Potter has always delivered.

Chelsea v Fulham (PL) Fri 3rd Feb 2023 20:00 GMT
The good news is Joao Felix is back this week. The bad news is we've already established with Mudryk that we don't score anyway and our new attackers only get 1 half of looking good on their debuts before Potters coaching takes effect.

Look at the manager and his 28% win rate across his entire premier league career. No attacking player has ever looked good or scored many goals under Potter.

Callum Hudson-Odoi
Those people haven't been honest with you! I don't think we can assume everyone who doesn't rate those duds or CHO are all the same person or we'd be assuming everyone at the Bridge is all the same Hive Mind!
-
Callum Hudson-Odoi
CHO is basically the English Pulisic. Not good enough, injury prone and have both flopped massively I'm England and Germany aside from a short Purple patch with us years ago. Think both have played their last game here and will be moved on in the summer if we can find anyone willing to pay their wages.
-
Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager
Given we've just spent £16m including wages to loan Felix for 5 months I'm not really sure we're writing this season off. And we have absolutely 0 chance of signing Enzo in the summer it's now or never or we'll be watching him at City for years to come.

Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager
Ruben is not a serious option in midfield for any premier league club and Kante is always injured. Seems a shame to bring in so much attacking talent while having such an abysmal midfield. I'd rather we got a midfielder and use the rest of the season to access if we have the right manager instead of limping towards midtable and having the usual suspects say we can't judge Potter because despite having 10 new players we didn't have the fabled new midfielder we desperately need.

They changed their manager.

Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager
It's strange how some people think we need the best players in the world in every position before we can expect a single goal under Potter.
-
Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager
You've imagined incorrectly. I do however find it strange that there's a selection of old supporters who are dismissive of those that started supporting the club under Roman and constantly harp on back to the old days when Chelsea were a very different beast. Roman bought the club 2 decades ago, assuming most people really get into football at the age of 10 you're looking at everyone under 30 and that includes pretty much ever player we've signed that will have only a Chelsea that always strive to be competitive. As a club we're a completely different entity than what we were in the 70s and 80s both for better and for worse and while some older supporters will have a lot of nostalgia from those times the standard now simply has to be higher due to the level of investment into the club, from the staff to the players to Cobam and the rest of the facilities and Graham Potter has to meet those standards.
