Backbiter Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 ... a league table compiled to show the results if games ended at 80 minutes? I suspect it would look a bit like this: 1Chelsea a few more points that at present 2Manure 3 Victimpool all about a dozen points fewer than now 4 Arse Not saying that scoring late winners is necessarily jammy - they must be doing something right to do it so regularly - but why the hell don't we do it any more? I have deliriously happy memories of Gallas's stunner v Spuds, and Dussan Taffa's header at Watford, but I have far more bad memories than good ones of the the last 10 minutes of matches. Anyone got any vague stats or other memories (good and bad) of these late match-deciders?
Chippy Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Interesting and I bet you're not far wrong, can't help with eighty minutes but check out this half time Table: http://www.365stats.com/football/index.php...ts&dir=desc

I have noticed Bosingwa in particular doesnt seem to attack as much during the second half.

Thats true and worth keeping an eye on, there are some interesting things on that site, did you notice we have had by far the most shots and the third least shots against us?

Cheers for that, which confirms what I thought, although I'm very surprised that Arse have gained a net zero points in the last 10, whereas we have a net gain of 2. Victimpool's net gain of 9 points is impressive.
goose Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 (edited) Cheers for that, which confirms what I thought, although I'm very surprised that Arse have gained a net zero points in the last 10, whereas we have a net gain of 2. Victimpool's net gain of 9 points is impressive. The only match were the last 10 mins has affected us was against Fulham when they got the late equaliser. In fact during the season we have only scored 1 goal in the last ten mins and that was deco's in the 4-0 win against Portmouth in the first match of the season. Although Arse have won their last two games in the last ten mins earlier on in the season they conceded late twice against Spurs and Villa for Draws. As you say the scums record is impressive. They have only been hurt once by a spurs equaliser but have twice scored two in the last 10 to convert losses into wins against M/boro and Wigan while getting late draws against Sunderland and City. No late goals to hurt Manure and only 2 late goals for recent victories against lowly Stoke and Sunderland. Edited January 10, 2009 by goose

PloKoon13 Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Topic: should FIFA adopt rugby's 80 minute match rule?Discuss. Yes, because then in 1999, Man Ure wouldn't have won anything.
Backbiter Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 This is on the Guardian site today. Confirms everything I thought: Opta stats show that only 14% of Chelsea's goals have been scored in the last 15 minutes of games: no other Premier League side has scored a lower proportion of their goals late in games this season. Not all goals, of course, are equal, and to an extent it doesn't matter all that much if teams are just adding third and fourth goals to what may already be convincing wins, but Chelsea have won only four points with goals scored in the final 15 minutes – better than only five other sides. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/20...lsea-tough-task

At first I looked at it and thought "where did all the points go" expecting to see a massive shift at one end of the table. But Liverpool without a dozen more points shows how much they have victimized everyone with those late winners. bar stewards
