WENGER: GIVE POINTS FOR GOALS

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has proposed a change to the points system in the Premier League in a bid to encourage attacking football.

With the financial price of relegation from the top flight so high, managers have been known to adopt defensive tactics with a view to holding out for a draw, rather than risk being exposed and suffering defeat.

This campaign, in the 30 rounds of games so far, there has been an average of 2.45 goals per game - down from 2.64 last term.

And Wenger has suggested that teams should be rewarded for a forward-thinking ethos by offering extra points for their winning margin in an encounter.

The Frenchman told the club's official magazine: "I would like to see a scheme brought in where you get more points for scoring more goals.

"In France they experimented with something before. When you scored three goals, you got an extra point. It was not a good system because you didn't care how many goals you conceded.

A fairer system would be three points for a victory as now, then extra points for your positive goal difference.

"For example, if you win 6-3, you get three points for the win, plus three more for the goal difference, while the team that loses gets none."

He added: "I explain the statistics by the fact the league has been so tight this year, and also because the pressure on managers is enormous, so most of them adopt a cautious attitude.

"In the longer term that could be detrimental to the quality of the game here. It will have an effect because, if we have more and more strikers sitting on the bench, and more defensive midfield players being used, the quality will not go up.

"Who is the most dominant team in the last 12 months? You have to say Manchester United, but they have won about 10 games 1-0 this season.

"That means nobody has found the solution to break down these teams that are resilient, well-organised and excellent physically."

hes lost it, this is ridiculous. does he not realise defending is part of football too? why should a lesser side not gain from defending well against a much better team? whats next, bonus points for passing the ball 20 times without losing posession? or basically whatever suits the way his team plays....

Wenger, you would still be in fourth place. Maybe they will institute the points for foreigners rule, Arsenal would have it wrapped up by December.

It's pretty funny, because according to his system, a team that loses 5-4 wouldn't get any points, but a team that scored early and then parked the bus, winning 1-0 would.

Idiot.

The failure of his logic is : small teams won't suddenly start attacking in a craze for an extra point. Small teams battle for a draw, not for more-than-3-goals wins.

He's lost it. Still, the more he is at Arsenal, the longer we can be sure they won't step on our toes.

How many points do you get if your skipper has a nervous breakdown and sits on the halway line crying his eyes out?

How many points if your home crowd is silent thoughtout the entire 90 minutes?

Hes saying this to force smaller teams to play a more open game agianst him.

Its just yet another "how dare they defend against us" rant.

You might want to be careful about the second point because we'd win a few for that too.

Am I the only one that doesn't actually think this is such a bad idea?

More goals and more open football would be nice, but some of the most thrilling matches are 1-0. And making it beneficial to win by 3 goals wont change anything, except that maybe the big teams will now continue to go for goals when they are already winning 2-0 in the 80th. West Brom wont go for more goals, because they can't score 3 goals.

i hope so, because its ridiculous. it wouldnt change the way lesser teams play away to better teams. as jack h said, its just another "how dare teams defend" rant. football is about goals, but its also about defending. i appreciate a a fantastic defensive display as much as i appreciate superb attacking. should teams have bonus points for keeping clean sheets too? if not, why not?

Oh god, there he goes again. He reminds me of Cruyff in that he is a legend that cant keep his mouth shut about attacking football this and that. Like Jack says, just another rant against teams that close Arsenal down, but thinly veiled.

In case Arsene zidnt zee it, the Premier League is the cream of the football crop without dodgy rule changes to suit people like him. Plenty of speed, physicality and skill, which happens to be what keeps me entertained.
