Your most memorable game ever?

Featured Replies

One of the most memorable games I've seen at the Bridge was the 4-2 victory over Liverpool in the FA-cup 1996. Fowler and Collymore scored in the first half and Chelsea were 2-0 down at halftime. The bloke next to me was so disapointed that he left. Little did he know that second half was going to be one of the best second halves in the modern history of Chelsea football club. Hughes, Zola and Vialli scored to make it 4-2 and the atmosphere was absolutely cracking even in the West stand.

I also remember Fulham - Chelsea at Craven Cottage in 2006. Drogba's disallowed handball goal, Gallas' red card, losing 1-0 and off course the pitch invasion when the Fulham fans stormed the pitch. Also remember there were fighting in the park outside the ground on our way to Putney Bridge.

Off course there have been some truly memorable Champions League games of late, but I've unfortunally not been to the Bridge to witness these games.

What are your most memorable Chelsea games? Any Mickey Greenaway histories?

Sheff Wed away 84 (4-4)

Cardiff away 84 (3-3)

FA CUP 94 (0-4)

Liverscum home 96 (4-2)

FA CUP 97 (2-0)

CWC 98 (1-0)

Barca home 05 (4-2)

Liverscum home 08 (3-2)

Barca home 09 (1-1)

Bruges at home, Cup Winners Cup Quarter-Final 2nd leg, 1970/71.

0-2 down from the first leg and favourites to go out, but for one thing. Peter Osgood returned after an 8-week ban and although clearly not match fit, he played. Chelsea were 2-0 up at 90 minutes, so it went into extra-time, and we went on to win 4-0 on the night, 4-2 on aggregate - goals by Ossie (2), Tommy Baldwin & Peter Houseman did the job. I'd never experienced an atmosphere at Stamford Bridge like that night beforehand, and I never did again - it was absolutely electric.

And of course, we went on to win the European Cup Winners Cup, before Liverpool ever won a European trophy - not bad for a team with no history, eh! ;)

Charlton at home in 2005, seeing JT lifting the cup... the match was dire, but the atmosphere was electric.

One of two Maka goals. Special ;)

There are three standouts for me, the Charlton one that Gem mentioned.

Viktoria Zizkov in the UEFA Cup - Chelsea are back Chelsea are back............ When European nights were special.

Sunderland in the FA Cup, can't remember what year but we drew at home then lost at their place. It was the first time I went to an evening game with mates rather than my dad and it was brilliant.

Two others that I just have to mention (this could go on forever!), Lazio away, first Euro away trip. Oxford away in the FA Cup, Craig Burley scored two - a great day, lots of drinking and lots of celery!

Oh and of course away at the y*ds - yes I was at the game when we trounced them 6-1, not much fun afterwards but during the game it was brilliant and they were working on their ground so there were only about 300 Chelsea there.

Watched it on telly, what a game! The best bit was the close ups on all the blubbing scallies at the end...I wonder if it's on utube? Nothing better than making those scallies cry!

Anyone remember the League Cup Semi-Final 2nd leg game against Sunderland, 1984/85?

Rather than describe the evening, here's a link to 10 pages of Mackems memories of the game: -

Chelsea v Sunderland, League Cup SF 2nd leg, 84/85

Well worth a read, especially if you were at the game, or if you want to know what the good old days were like (especially from an opposition fans perspective) ;)

"The main bulk of trouble started to the Sunderland fans left. A group of Sunderland fans were in the lower seats in the corner of the next stand and were being showered by ripped seats from above. A large half cast skinhead Chelsea fan climbed out of that section and calmly walked past all the coppers and suddenly climbed onto the fence in front of the Sunderland away fans and just dove in like a maniac. All hell broke loose."

My old man used to work on suplyboat on the north sea in the eighties and nineties and they often went to London during their time off. He always had a passion for english football and I remember he used to tell me about going to games and all the riot and mayhem inside and outside the stadium. He was never into football violence, but got caught between Chelsea fans and ICF once at Victoria station and had to defend himself from getting his teth kicked in. Also remember he couldn't understand why Chelsea fans made monkey chants at Paul Canonville, their own player. My old man was never a Chelsea supporter, he just loved english football. He took me to Chelsea - QPR and gave me my baptism of english football and Chelsea in '92.

thursday night game away at everton. essien scored the only goal. it wasn't a good game but it was my only chelsea game so far lol

was in blackpool for a bit with my mates so went down to liverpool for the night. was a decent atmosphere in with the away fans. from what i hear the bridge isn't great for atmosphere

Just found some footage of another very memorable evening at the Bridge - 28 May 1988 v Middlesbrough (Div.1 playoff)

Again, the clip only gives a quick taste of what actually went on. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife that night.

I'd just like to add that I'm not trying to advocate or glorify hooliganism, that would be naughty of me ;) It's just that the Sunderland & Middlesbrough games are very memorable to me (and loads like me), plus of course too many other games to mention for similar reasons, but I won't go there!

Depending where you sit, but if you're in the upper tiers of East or West you might think you're attending a funeral. Matthew harding lower and the Shed end is the only places I've been with good atmosphere. I like to sing and get behind the team so it's always MHL or Shed for me. If you compare todays atmosphere with the Bridge from the seventies and eighties it's probably lightyears between.. It doesn't help that you get evicted for standing either..

what's the point in you being there if you don't sing/chant?

you do no good for your team by sitting there in silence. may as well watch on tv and give your seat to someone who cares

i think it's just footie in general. i'm only 23 and i can tell the difference between only a few years ago and now. ibrox is like a graveyard nowadays but when i had the opportunity to travel over in my earlier days, the atmosphere was unreal. it probably has something to do with some chants being outlawed at ibrox but it's no excuse really

This has been adressed many times and some supporters started Back to the Shed a couple of years ago to get people singing. Have been to games when the opo sings '4-0 and you still don't sing', that's bad.

Increase in ticketsprices have made many of the most vocal Chelsea supporters stay at home and their seats are taken people who isn't interested in singing and would just like to watch the game in peace. It's a shame really. I sat in East upper for the Juve game in Feb. and I tried to start Carefree and made a complete fool of myself standing there singing alone. Last time I ever get tickets at East upper..

Here are some Cardiff city fans accounts of the day we played them at Ninnian park in 84, 3-0 down with 10 minutes to play and we managed to scrape a 3-3 draw, was mayhem before during and after the game, especially when the Welsh flag was set to flame at the back of the home stand.

Now that was a great day out, I remember it well (or as well as can be expected considering the booze I put away that day) ;)

The most memorable game I've actually been to was our 2-1 win over Arsenal in the Carling Cup Final, 2007. Awesome game ;)

But my most memorable is a tie between the Chelsea 4 - 4 Liverscum, and the Chelsea 4 - 2 Barca. Can't decide between them.

Gotta add Chels v Weat Ham - a couple of years ago

Hazy on the detail but Spam went 2 or 3 nil up, Ballack got sent off and then we played our hearts out to beat the caravan dwellers

Cue

2.0 and you f**ked it up

10 men, we only had ten men

no noise from the pikey boys

What a great day out, not the best memory ever though

Bridgey scoring against l'arse to knock em out of Europe still brings a smile

Had the same problem. Went to see us at home to Wigan, sitting in the West Upper I stood up to sing a few times and people turned around and looked at me, like i had two heads. I hate those people so much, no wonder opposing fans slag our support! I only ever sit in the Shed or MHL. I've a broken ankle and i would still rather stand in the MHL than up with those "Samsungers" in the east or west stands! If only they got the away fans back out of the Shed, we'd have the two ends of the grounds singing!

will add a game from 94 against the scum from north london...they went 2-0 up inside 20 minutes, but we were 3-2 up by half-time, including a goal from mal donaghy! Andy gray got a pen for them to make it 3-3 and then had another one with 10 mins to go only for kharine to save it...in last min gavin peacock wins a pen of his own, mark stein smashes it into the top corner and the shed went wild!

Here's a quick clip from that Sunderland game - it only gives a very small idea of what went on that night though: -

Nice clip. Cheers

Obviously this question has come up a few times, it is a tough one there are so many ... some great mentions above.

Gave it some thought and I came up with

Barcelona home Champions Leaugue.. was it 2005 ?? With Terry's winning header

FA cup final against boro .. my first memorable major trophy. I was a bit too young for Leeds.

Away at Bolton when we clinched the title, the players really celebrated with us and the vast majority of Bolton fans were excellent, will allways have respect for them for that.

There are loads more but they came to the front of my mind, list will probably change tomorrow.
