Rumour from Daily Express that Roman is ready to splash out 70 million pound on young players this summer, Marek Hamsik, Angel Di Maria, Neven Subotic and Bastian Schweinsteiger are some of the names that are on Chelseas wishlist.

Don't know what to believe, it would be amazing if it did happen seeing how almost everyone playing now are in the 30's.

Chelsea signing Schweinsteiger is about the most horrible thing that I could imagine. Apart from Schweinsteiger´s lack of quality he is also a total idiot who thinks of himself as the most bestest footballer ever. Horrible rumour................Thinking about Schweinsteiger is giving me physical pain. ;)

I really rate Bastian Schweinsteiger as a player, but i don't see how he would fit in our squad, he plays on the left and we have Malouda (maybe a swap & cash) and Zhirkov, who deserves more time. Plus Lamps seems to have that position. Can't see him playing at the tip of the diamond either. Di Maria is the same, we wont be after him either for the same reason

Does anyone else rate Schweinsteiger, or is it just me?

He's not bad...but there are better options....players that aren't as big douchebags.

I just hope we bring in a couple of young stars, and release some of our old, underperforming folks into the wild.

Regardless of the names being thrown about, and the fact that I don't really bother with what is written by the papers when it comes to who we are linked with, I would love to see something like this happen.

I think this next year would be ideal to start bleeding in some great prospects with the addition of a couple "sure fire" "marquee" signings.

Not sure who, not sure who would leave, but the idea of a squad of some of the most promising talent in Europe mixed in with the experience we have, would be amazing!

Couldn't agree more. As our guys get older in the next two-three seasons, we've got to be doing what United are doing with Scholes, Giggs, Neville etc. and making sure their experience gets passed on while rotating them through the squad. The kind of players that this article talks about are already great talents and working with Lamps, Didier and the German can hopefully make them into the kind of players that can keep us at the pinnacle of English and European football for next decade and beyond.

Aguero, Di Maria and Subotic sound perfect for me and tick all the boxes.

Sadly i would say there is two hopes of us signing them all.

No hope, and Bob Hope.

Agreed, there is no way we will sign them all especially with the interest each played is receiving from other clubs. However, even to land a couple of them would be ideal, or a couple of the promising young players throughout Europe. Dzagoev, etc.

Two things....I am suprised in this article that they feel Alex would be someone to make way. Secondly, I am suprised we are being linked with wingers

I want some new blood, but some of these real young guys like Dzagoev I would like to secure their rights but keep them at whatever club they are currently at...it'd be nice to have some right of refusal if they get super-injured but I can't see a club taking that type of agreement, oh well.

I've been on the 'Bastan-Bandwagon' since first seeing him breakthrough into the Germany team a fair few years ago now. He's not going to suddenly change the team, but I think he'd be able to do a good job in the Premier League, and won't cost a huge amount of money (unless there is a Bayern panicking situation after Ribery gets sold.

None of those players will fit into our squad. Bullsh*t rumour.

We only really need a CAM/CM in the summer as Deco/Cole's replacement. Dzagoev would be the ideal player.

Hamsik is a poor mans Lampard. Not really what we need atm.

we defintley need more than one player. We have to look to the future now, just look at the squads average age.

how exactly would a centre back not fit into our squad ? Especially if we lose Percy?

And you don't think the two quality argentine attacking players would benefit us, or do you want us to keep Kalou?

He wont get anything done in the PL. He cant even impress in the Bundesliga, how can one expect him to impress in England then? He is btw also playing holding midfield nowadays because his lack of attacking quality forced his managers to change his position. Believe me he is sh*te, slows down the game, not a good defender and to that a douchebag.

If we sign anyone from the Bundesliga players like Elia (Hamburg), Özil (Bremen), Eduardo (Hoffenheim) or Subotic are coming to my mind, certainly not Schweinsteiger.

This article is typical of many that either fail to recognise the increasing number of young players we have coming through our ranks, or choose to deliberately ignore the fact so that they can get around to the more important business of linking us with loads of big money signings yet again. Still, at least passing reference is made to Gael Kakuta, Jeffery Bruma and Daniel Sturridge this time, so I suppose we should be grateful that some media attention is being paid to our efforts to develop talent rather than to our abilty to pay out massive transfer fees ad infinitum.

Perhaps of more interest than the boring and incessant ritual dance of rumour/link/snub that we are bound to get in the coming months is the somewhat bizarre lifespan the pundits have given our ‘ageing squad’ and the sudden need to replenish it. Subject to any player wanting to leave of his own volition, I see the requirement as being more within the year, for Deco, Belletti and Paulo, and within two years for the likes of Riccy, Lamps, Didier and Nico. Therefore, as those first three named are likely to want out at the end of the season anyway, and Kakuta and Bruma look set to solve the immediate need for two replacements, ultimately the rush might only be for a utility player.

Bearing this in mind, I think the club are working on a longer timescale of nearer five years [when JT will be close to calling it a day] to see the full extent of youth transition into the first team squad. A glance at my predicted squad in five years time (given below) compares favourably with the current 35 [squad-numbered] players in terms of age and it would not cost another penny in transfer fees. The only areas that look lightweight to me are central defence and the strike department, where we have been virtually one top class player short for the last two seasons and [you could argue] money should have been spent a lot earlier. Then again, that’s why I’ve left two spaces available, one for a defender/utility player (Jack Rodwell), the other for the striker we have needed for some time (Sergio Aguero) and these are the only two I would be trying to buy this summer.

Goalkeepers:- Cech, Turnbull, Sebek

Full Backs:- Ivanovic, Zhirkov, Bertrand, van Aanholt, Mancienne, Cork, Clifford

Central Defenders:- Alex, Bruma, Hutchinson, (Terry, Magnay, Mills Pappoe)

Midfield Holding:- Mikel, Matic, Bridcutt

Mid-Central/Wide:- Essien, Kakuta, Stoch, Tore, Clifford [C] Mellis, Djalo, McEachran, Lalkovic

Strikers:- Sturridge, Kalou, Di Santo, Borini, Mitrovic
