The Machine Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 I know there are a few months to go before it starts but I would like to ask members on here what their expectations are for Chelsea in this season's Champions League?
Hutch Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 expectations: to get out of the group stage. after that it's a lottery as with any knockout competition. hopes? given the choice of Champions League and another Premiership title, for me it would be the Premiership every time. but as i wrote elsewhere, i'm pretty sure Abramovic feels differently. however, to fall back on a cliche, you've got to be in it to win it, and to finally lift the trophy after recent disappointments would certainly help put a few ghosts to rest.
Ben Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 I expect even more abyssmal reffing. There is more of them now so expect even more mistakes. I was absolutely love to win it. But can't see past Real or Barcelona this year.
ace Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 While I feel like our squad is currently excellent and should win everything domestically, I do feel, as others have pointed out, that unless we a signing like Aguero or someone similar, we might have trouble overcoming one of the Spanish squads in the KO rounds. However, this obviously depends on a lot of things, such as health of ours and their stars, as well as if we actually have to play them. Long story short: it's probably too early to be worrying about this competition that I care less and less about each year.
The Machine Posted July 22, 2010 Author Posted July 22, 2010 My expectations for the Champions League this season are for Chelsea to as usual get pass the group stage. I would like to point out that Chelsea have never failed to get out of the group stage of the competition. In the eight group stage campaigns that we have participated since the 1999/2000 season we have finished in first on six occasions. As for beyond the group stage I have no idea. What I do know is that if we get either Real or Barca in the next round or beyond I cannot see us getting pass them, or even Bayern Munich for that matter. For me they are the three teams and along maybe Inter that the rest have to beat in this season's competition.
ewitkows Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 Unless we sign a couple of quality players, I don't see us getting past the 2nd ko round. Group stage shouldn't be a problem but after that I'm not so sure.
Plavi26 Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 Tbh, if there are no more blatant official mistakes, I think we have the right squad and depth to go on and win it. I think we could beat Barca and Real with the right tactics (as Hiddink and Jose have shown the last two years - if you are able to be organised at the back, you can easily disturb and frustrate those two teams and their "beautiful football". I think Real, with Jose at helm, will be a very difficult beast to take down, the only thing that remains to be seen is if Jose can work well with his team and in-store the type of defensive football (which doesn't seem to be liked over there) that made both us and Inter very menacing.
Andreas Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 If we get some luck with us this time around im sure we can go on and win it, but im not getting to excited since we most likely will get f**ked over by the officals.
Anders Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 Well. Øvrebø has quitted international football, so... But seriously, I expect us to at least get trough the group stages. It's all about luck and margins from there on.
Spiller86 Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Really depends on: 1. Whether our big players (most notably Essien) stay fit. 2. To what degree we replace Ballack in midfield. If we tick both of those boxes we could go along way again. BTW how many games is Drogba suspended for this time ?
sdsdsdsd Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 (edited) Definitely have the capacities to win the thing. Rock solid defense is a must for any campaign, and with Essein back, should go a long way in our title chase. We should have won it when manu and barca won but bad luck/refereeing really messed us up. Coaching play a VITAL part in Championsleague, Jose won the cup with 2 less than spectacular squads while Guus almost did the same with us. We might not match Barca/Real on paper or talent, however if Carlo makes the right moves and plays tactically and to our advantage, theres no doubt we can win Edited July 23, 2010 by sdsdsdsd
Epic Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Looking at the squad currently I'd say we have little to no hope of winning the CL. Not enough good cover in midfield and attack (but we have 10 right backs!). Lampard, Mikel, Essien, Malouda, Drogba and Anelka do not have sufficient cover. If any of them are injured we're screwed. But who cares? I don't care much for that competition and would be estatic at winning the league again.
jcm28 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Our chances are preety good as long as we don't face Real. Without Jose we could beat them but with him im not so sure. Barcelona's magic is sure to go away soon. Ive always thought that we are a much better team than Bayern, and Inter with Benitez? LOL. Thats just pathetic.
Riccardo Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 The final is at Wembley next year. I think it would be pretty special if we win it in our home town, and that would be added motivation for some of the longer serving members of the squad. After all these years of tough luck the cards have to be dealt our way eventually, and I think that this might just be our year.
BlueNose Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 [Drogba is banned for 2 i believe (someone asked)] I cant see us winning it this season,i think we'll easily get out of the group,we'll get a standard last 16 tie against a team like lyon and we will win, only to be drawn against real madrid and then we will get done once again by mourinho and probably a ref will contribute(penalty claims and all that). Off topic: unless we strengthen we will have trouble challenging for the title aswell,as i know its early, but the youth havent impressed so far
Zola Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 The league will forever mean more than the Champions League . I cant see us winning it anytime soon, but i'd love to be proved wrong.
Zola's Love Child Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 I think it is going to be Jose's CL again this year. I think we might get so far as the semis, but, same as others, I care a lot more about the league. I'd trade 3 CL wins for a Premier League Trophy.
aliboy66 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 I think its about 4king time we won this champions league will we yeah i think so
Ruh Buh Juh Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 I'd much rather see us win the League over the CL, but for any Chelsea fan, you must want to see JT lift the CL just once?
BigIzz Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 I don't like our chances much, I don't think our squad has enough depth. Unless we add more quality veteran players, I think our squad has too much youth. Not to say that is the wrong approach but it'll be though to win the CL with. I do expect to get out of the group and after that...who knows?
Blue Steel Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 We should at least make the quarter finals. Past there, every team needs a bit of luck or a favourable draw to go on and win it.
jcm28 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 If we get someone like Aguero (which we probably wont get) then i'd say our chances are preety high. We need many different things for this to happen. Drogba needs to play somewhat like last season and stay healthy, Anelka as well, Lampard needs to continue scoring, Malouda has to continue his form, and if we could get someone like torres that can also carry our offense then it would help alot too. I think its possible, and winning it in London would be really amazing.
