Only born in 71...did anybody on the board attend?

Cheers Jim

I was sick of the sight of Norwich by the time the tie was over.

We played them at the Bridge in the league 09 December 1972, beat 'em 3-1, then four days later we lost at home to them 0-2 in the League Cup SF 1st leg. There were quite a few mouthy wurzels in the West Stand that night, we spent most of the match trying to get in amongst them.

The second leg was on 20 December, and quite a few of us went up there. As anyone who was around at the time will tell you, the fog came down so bad in the second half that the game was called off. I'm not surprised, seeing as they built their ground right next to a bleedin' river. Score at the time was 3-2 to the mangel worzels, so we got another chance - I felt so sorry for Alan Hudson, I think that was the only time he'd scored twice in a game for Chelsea!

All back to Norwich in early January for the re-match, we lost 1-0, 3-0 on aggregate, but by then most of us had given up caring.

One bright spot - our next game was at Brighton in the FA Cup, superb memories!

I loved that, thanks mate.

It grieved me then and it still does to see my boys in fecking red, and it also reminded me that Jimmy "Smugtwat" Hill never really liked us, even then, in his very first commentary.

C'mon You Reds!!!!!!!!! It don't work, does it?

That was a new one for me too, nice one mate. I'm bu99ered if I can see why two goals were ruled out for offiside and we moan about modern refs ??!! And Jimmy fu**ing Hill with his after match summary shows himself, and the Big Match to be as we always remember total anti-Chelsea.

I quite liked the red kit, certainly with the green socks..... "Eddie MaCreadie's red white and green army" as it said sprayed on the wall outside the CBL.

i think the big match was very pro arsenal and brian moore used to go garrity everytime they scored especially in the 70s, as for that graffiti outside the cbl.....superb !!

I'd love to know who wrote that ! I saw it when going to the Millwall v Ipswich cup game a couple of years after we played there. The same 'artist' also did a wall on the alley leading down from New King's Road to Putney Bridge Station in silver paint but this time with......"blue and white army". He had the neatest spraying I ever saw!

I was coming back from a family holiday in Cornwall and my Dad always insisted on taking the county roads rather than motorways. We were going down this lane in Devon past this lovely thatched country pub and all I could see in front of us on it's white wall was CHELSEA. I pissed myself as it was a year later than the game we'd played at Plymouth in another thread.

To sidetrack, they brought a good mob to Chelsea the first time in Div2, got battered and the next year had a very poor turnout. I think that was quite typical in those days, Cardiff were another although it was a few years later before we played them again in the league cup.

That's the one mate! Blimey, I watched that on the Sunday after the game and haven't seen any footage since, great memories - thanks a lot for finding that!

I'm pretty sure I'm not on the footage :D

I started watching the game on the side terrace (where the camera was), then after some gobby chants by Brighton fans a load of us ran across the pitch and jumped into the Brighton end behind the goal to the right. I've got a feeling the game was still going on at the time, but it could have been half-time when we did this. Loads of beer was consumed pre-match, as you can imagine - I'm pretty sure this is the game where the floor in the pub caved in when we were giving it 'Knees Up Mother Brown'!

If you look at the footage in the early second half, you'll see a few plods in the right hand corner to obviously try and deter any more going over to visit the Brighton chaps.

i think that when chelsea run from the corner bit into the brighton end was before the game, there was a boozer opposite their end in the park which was chocker

Before the game? You could be right, my memory can play tricks sometimes - the fifteen light & bitters before the match probably didn't help ;)

The pub where the floor collapsed was very close to the ground, probably the one you mentioned - it was heaving with Chelsea!

Yikes, we scored after 10 seconds, but it was waived off for being offsides. How's in Hell's name was that goal offsides?

I think with the old offside rule you didn't have to be interfering with play to be offside. One of our players only had 1 defender between him and the goal at the time the ball was struck, and their goalie was in front of him. I'm pretty sure it had to be 2 players or 1 plus goalie behind you. Seems very harsh looking at it from the perspective of modern rules though.

You're right. It looks weird to see it ruled out now but as you say, back then offsides tended to be given regardless of whether the player was either 'interfering with play' or 'seeking to gain an advantage'. You could argue that the player in that clip was 'seeking to gain an advantage' by standing there, even though he wasn't exactly 'interfering'.

Even with today's interpretation of offside, any player in the 6 yard box could be considered 'active' if he's in the keeper's line of vision, but these days you normally have to actually touch the ball to be active.

I remember us benefitting from an offside decision against Wolves in our promotion year - 1976-77. Their striker - John Richards, I think - took the ball to the byline and pulled it back for someone to smash it in. Comically, the linesman flagged because Richards was in an offside position on the byline as the shot was hit, and the ref disallowed it. We ended up drawing 3-3.

I remember that. The rule was that a ball being played backwards took out the winger interfering with play, all good wingers in those days could put a cross in on the run but many used to walk off the pitch at the byeline just to be on the safe side.

that wolves game was on the big match, and i remember a wolves player, i think it was daley, who picked up the corner flag and used it as a guitar which was on the opening captions for years, i also remember it was freezing that day. Brian clogh said that we were the best team in that division that season

Any other fog stories. Living in Fulham I used to go there quite often. One very foggy friday night they were playing Southampton and me and a mate went in the Putney End to size up the away fans. Being Chelsea we weren't very impressed never rating Southampton at all so after going round to the Thamesbank infomed a few of our Fulham mates that they'd have no trouble bearing in mind they could hear but not see Soton. Around they all went and promptly got chased all over the place 'by blokes with beards' one of them told me next time I saw him.

The Norwich games bring back a few memories for me. 1972 was the first season my parents allowed me to go the Bridge on my own. I remember being well sick of Jimmy f**king Bone by the end of the season.

To add to the pain of losing to Norwich in the League Cup, my old man did pantomime in Norwich possibly in 1973 or 74 and he was playing the dame. During rehearsing one particular sketch which required removing a number of layers of clothing he got his leg caught and ended up rupturing his cruciate ligament. His recuperation was partly done courtesy of Norwich FC where the physios helped plan his fitness regime which was so sophisticated it consisted of tying a harness around his lower leg so it was possible to put a fairly heavy ashtray in it to enable him to do weight lifting with his leg to strengthen the muscles! How times have moved on since then.

Never seen the brighton footage before. Excellent stuff! Had to laugh at the chelmsford - ipswich game suddenly going black and white half way through.

Anyone remember the Oldham game early 90's in the fog? we lost 3.1 & we couldnt see past the half way line, Chelsea scored at the opposite end but we didnt realise at first as we couldnt see it.
