Sometime in the 80’s was listening to Chris Tarrant on Capital when some rumour caught wildfire that there was a lion on the loose in Dollis Hill. Turned out to be bollox but caused a panic. Coulsdon Pets- on the A23 heading south towards Brighton/ Gatwick - used to have an A- Board sign out the front “ LAST PET SHOP BEFORE THE M23 “ Just incase you had to fill your petrol tank up with Trill Budgie food before hitting the motorway

Just Googled and it says the 1877 picture is 1939 ! there is a drawing of when the Bridge first opened and it's like a non league ground. The second picture is from 1905 it's the All Blacks and it's quite clearly a pretty small ground. Third and fourth pictures are 1909 and the 1921 cup final which bloody Tottenham won.
May 11, 20233 yr v West Brom back in Sept 1905. I've had a look and can't find any pictures of us playing before this match ! This picture has been posted before. By me. Just thought it was relevant to the recent pics on this thread and so worth posting again.
May 11, 20233 yr A couple more from the West Brom game of Sept 1905. If anyone interested (and I fully accept it might just be me😀) .There’s a thread ‘: ‘Chelsea v West Brom Sept 1905’ with the really old photos and info. It’s from 1905 to about 1939. Edited May 11, 20233 yr by erskblue

Love that bottom pic, with fans walking behind the east stand. There's another similar pic and it looks like blokes having a slash against the wall to the right of the top of shed stairs ! Think it's in book by Glanvill 🤪

May 11, 20233 yr Speedie match ball vs Man City full members. Funny to think after playing in a tin pot competition we would play each other in the Champions League final 35 years later. He's going to be at the the 83/84 night rumoured not to be the most popular player in the team and I just found out he played a few games for West Ham I didn't know that.

Compared with our main London competition- Spurs, Arsenal, West Ham, we by far were the worst catered for in this regard- a lot of floating football fans back then who would turn out to watch the likes of Finney, Matthews, Lofthouse etc, who must have been put off turning up at ours if the weather forecast was a bit iffy; sod going to Stamford Bridge and getting pissy wet when they can get under The North Bank at Highbury. False economy, construction costs versus consequent revenue gains I’d say Pretty much all the iconic terraces, Kop, Kippax, Holte End, got roofed over in the 40s or 50’s. As we know The Shed only came about to keep the bookies dry, and it didn’t cover much of the end. Crumb of comfort- Palace, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle home ends no roofs whatsoever
