Really baffling photo below, I know it's reversed, but it does my head in !

Boyne mate, the only way I could get my pic to stick was to piggy back onto your one , apologies.

@The Rising Sun No worries about piggy backing on my picture. Great picture you've posted.  Barry Bridges and Terry Venables in the picture?

Great picture.

Correct it is the Steeplechase Water Jump Barrier behind the goalmouth.

The long jump run up and sandpit is in front of the terracing at the halfway line.

Thanks for confirmation about it being the water jump barrier and for pointing out the long jump run up and sandpit.

Nowadays the water jump barrier is near the start of the 100 metres. At Stamford Bridge it is just around the bend from the 100 metres finish. I wonder when the location changed or could stadia just place it anywhere until the Athletics governing bodies standardised its location.

Yeah looks like Venables. I know it can't be but when I first looked I thought it was Tony Hateley, but Venebles had moved on by then ?

Yes, does look Hateley but joined at the start of the season 66/67. Yes, Venables moved at the end of the previous season. Could it be Ossie?

I reckon you were right first time Boyne, just refreshed my memory by looking at pics of  Bridges . Deffo him.

I’m not sure. I’ll do some research and hopefully find out.

Lord Burghley at the Steeplechase Water Jump. 1920s.

Due to variations in the size, number, and spacing of the hurdles, and the size and position of the water jump, performances before 1954 are not comparable. They are though recognised.

Jimmy Greaves and Johnny Haynes at Craven Cottage in 1960.

Goodness knows what Jimmy Greaves would be worth at his peak in today’s highly inflated transfer market! And how many goals he would score at his peak on the bowling green pitches!!
