That Tony Hately chap was very good in the air. On the deck however......

Tommy Doc’ wanted to out him, and got on the blower to Bill Shankly.

TD” 100,000 wouldn’t buy him”

Shanks “ Yeah I’m one on ‘em”

Saw his son Mark Hateley when we played Pompey late 84 in the promotion season- was well impressed- like his old man good in the air- looked like Atilla The Hun when in full flow rampaging with that long hair. Went to AC Milan after that. Proper handful when on the top of his game

Shanks did buy him!

I think he scored against us with a diving header at Anfield , pretty sure it was first game of the season too ?

Yeah his son was a top centre forward on his day .

Mark Hateley that day…didn’t score however every now again you see opposition players who make an impression. John Barnes played one of his first Watford games at the Bridge. Was in the Shed watching, and remember thinking he’s something special this kid.

We played Villa at the end of the 1966 season and lost 2-0 , i just looked up the stats

I always thought it was a Friday evening, but it was a Monday, and I always recalled Hateley scoring with a diving header.

He actually scored from a penalty!

20 years today. Jose's first match as Chelsea coach.

First Premier League match. Jose very first match in charge was a friendly against Oxford United a month before. Remember that one? I do.

I love that picture of the stadium on the front of the programme.

Yes, a great picture of a great stadium. Very different from nowadays. A guy I knew was there in 1945 when we played Moscow Dynamo. Estimated that there was 100,000 in the crowd. There is a few games I'd like to go back in time to and the one against Moscow Dynamo is one of them. Now, where's my Tardis?!

Chopper lets the referee know exactly what he thinks about Stan Bowles’ attempt to get a free kick.  I had forgotten what a mud heap Loftus Road was in the early 70s.

I think most pitches were mud baths in the 60's / 70's...the Bridge was one of the worse ones if I remember, especially the amount of sand they threw on the pitch to soak up the mud, let alone that the ball became the weight of a medicine ball within a few minutes.

Frank Blunstone used to have a sports shop in Wandsworth somewhere, can't remember the road, our bus used to pass it on the way to football.

I guess opening a sports shop was right up there with pubs as a post-football career option back in the day.

All my school sports kit came from Bobby Tambling Sports in the shopping arcade near Havant station  🙂

I'm told a relative of mine played in goal for Chelsea that day - Vic Woodley...
