Went to AC Milan after that. Proper handful when on the top of his game

I think he scored against us with a diving header at Anfield , pretty sure it was first game of the season too ? Yeah his son was a top centre forward on his day .

John Barnes played one of his first Watford games at the Bridge. Was in the Shed watching, and remember thinking he’s something special this kid.

We played Villa at the end of the 1966 season and lost 2-0 , i just looked up the stats I always thought it was a Friday evening, but it was a Monday, and I always recalled Hateley scoring with a diving header. He actually scored from a penalty!

A guy I knew was there in 1945 when we played Moscow Dynamo. Estimated that there was 100,000 in the crowd. There is a few games I'd like to go back in time to and the one against Moscow Dynamo is one of them. Now, where's my Tardis?!

I think most pitches were mud baths in the 60's / 70's...the Bridge was one of the worse ones if I remember, especially the amount of sand they threw on the pitch to soak up the mud, let alone that the ball became the weight of a medicine ball within a few minutes.

I guess opening a sports shop was right up there with pubs as a post-football career option back in the day. All my school sports kit came from Bobby Tambling Sports in the shopping arcade near Havant station 🙂
