Standing up at football

One small thing that annoyed me about the game on saturday was people telling other people to sit down during the game (I was in the middle tier). It's a champions league final for f**k sake ! One guy started hitting the guy in front of him with the plastic flag pole we got given because he wouldn't sit down. It's not like there was any young kids there or anything or people who couldn't see. It was grown men shouting at others to sit down in debatably the biggest game of our history.

Say you had a bad back and could not stand up for more than one minute a time without experiencing pain. In that case, you would be mad if the person in the seat in front of you was always standing up. At least I would be. So, I have no problem with the one fan asking the other fan to sit down, especially if that fan had been standing up for a while.

In that case would you have travelled to Munich to watch a game of football where you know 90% of people will want to stand?

I hate sitting down at football, just doens't feel right.

And my arse would not have touched the plastic had I been in Munich.

I cant stand sitting down (unintended pun). I got told to sit down at Wembley against Spurs and kindly told him where to go. I get what your saying Philip if you cant then tap me or anyone else on the shoulder and say something like 'Look sorry mate I cant stand for long as I have a bad back' or whatever it is. Then fair enough Id respect that and try my utmost hardest to stay seated and not obstruct there view. But if you tell me to f**king sit down and get aggressive then Ill just argue back and probably stand up even more. It works 2 ways you cant expect someone to help you if your just abusive to them.

Okay, this must be an age thing: I'm very relieved that I can sit. I jump up when we even cross the half-way line of course Oh and when we score, or other exciting things happen like calling the referee a w**ker, but on the whole: thank goodness for seats

It's a game of football, not a trip to the theatre or the opera and I don't think it has anything to do with how long you have been a fan. I would say it relates to how passionately you support your team at a match. Some like to sit and clap politely and don't sing, others like to stand up, sing their hearts out and go a bit wild. Also regarding the bad back thing if you are not able bodied there are places you can sit where you're view will not be obscured by anyone standing up, although granted might be impossible to get them for the Champions League final! To keep everyone happy there should be sections where you are allowed to stand and other areas where you are not.

I'm young and what the hell is wrong with standing, i mean if there is a grandad or something behind you then fair play, but in any other case they should stop whinging about.

The guy who told me to sit down I told him to stand up his response was then the people behind me cant see. I replied Well if you stand up then he stands up then everyone does and it creates a better atmosphere but he was adamant that it didn't and I was wrong.

Sorry but anyone going to an away fixture and expecting people to sit is seriously out of touch with football.

Even at the Bridge, behind the goals it's common knowledge you stand and if in East or West you sit.

I'd love to see all-standing sections at the Bridge.

Also, sitting in those hard seats for the duration of a football match can be just as uncomfortable for people with back problems than standing.

Standing sections would be incredible , but i seriously doubt we'll ever see them in English football. Not only would they drive down prices like they have in Germany (bout 20 euro to see Bayern play most opposition), but would finally some of the atmosphere back which has been drained out of the countries grounds.

But unfortunately , the powers that be at Sky and the Premier league aren't interested in that. All they want is to sanitise the game to the point where they have created thousand of paying customers instead of real supporters. The only way this trend is ever going to change is if you get the 15-21 age group going to football again.

My one hope is that this possible new ground at Battersea will have some sort of provision to get the right people through doors to get the atmosphere rocking, but I'm pretty sceptical

This is such a stupid thing that in my experiences only happens whenever we travel away from the Bridge, and it really annoys me when people in crowds get angry about it.

If people are stood up in front of you then stand up. If they are not then you are free to sit down (if you want to). If you've come to football but are too f**king lazy to stand up for extended periods of time then you shouldn't be there, especially in a final or away day.

The ONLY situation in which you have the right to argue for fans to sit down is when you have your son or a small child with you, and you want them to see the game so they can enjoy it, have the same experiences that you had growing up, and grow up loving this club. Although my little brother just stands on the chair and uses me for support.

I would tell the person who was telling me to sit down to f*ck right off. I'm a firm believer that supporting my team is singing and trying to help my team by being vocal. I'm all about atmosphere it's those muppets who constantly tell people to sit down that are killing the atmosphere at SB along with the plastics who don't even know the songs!!!

I pay my money so if I wish to stand up then deal with it.. Write to the club an ask them to place you in a section where you can sit down without worrying. If your disabled or incapable of standing then you tell the club and they will seat you in designated areas.

Away games, your outnumbered by the home fans so to sing your loudest and get behind your team is a must. I never sit down away from home and sing my heart out in support of my team.

If you don't like supporting the team and moan about people who do then f*ck off and support Fulham!!!

Glad others agree with me on this. The incident i saw in the ground was really getting quite heated with the guy proper lashing out but eventually calmed down. It does my head in though when fellow fans are telling you to sit down let alone the stewards.

To be honest I just can't see the attraction in sitting at football at all.

If you want a comfy seat and to be able to put your feet up and watch in comfort then watch from your arm chair at home. If you want to feel a part of it and to support your team then go and stand and sing and support your team.

For me it all comes down to weather you are there to watch or support. If you are there to support then you will sing and if you sing you stand up.

Each to their own and all that but thats the way I see it.

To be honest it's bad enough that stewards try and make you sit down but your fellow Chelsea fans at an away game, yet alone the champions league final is pretty embarrassing to me. Unless of course there is a reason such as an old boy or kid behind you then that is obvioulsy different but if it's just cos someone can't be arsed to get off their back side and support the team in the biggest game of the clubs history then I'm sorry but that seat could have gone to someone with a bit more passion.
