Scolari new Brazil coach

Featured Replies

Well based on his last management spell with them it's a match made in heaven. Kind of confused as to why Brazil sacked their coach though? Any particular reason?

They thought he was DUNG(a)

They really hated Scolari before, seems a bizarre appointment.

They were calling for him to be sacked during the tournament he went on to win. Guess they've stopped caring about playstyle

Well they were generally playing like sh*t.

Menezes was the wrong appointment in the first place though; he didn't have the requisite pedigree.

Yes, on all accounts. It'll be nothing short of an embarassment, in their eyes, if Brasil doesn't win the WC on their home soil.

Scolari has proven to be a success at International Football as he led Brazil to the World Cup in 2002 and he was consistently strong at Portugal. I can't say the same about club level though.

To JoeyN, I would expect all three boys to play to be regulars as they're at the right age. During the 2014 World Cup, Luiz will be 27, Oscar 23 and Ramires 27.

I'm surprised Scolari was chosen as manager of Brazil. I thought Menezes was on the right track establishing a new style of play. He injected some spark into a young squad. Now they have Scolari who I believe will be a disasterous appointment. He doesn't have the players he had in 2002 - Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Cafu, Carlos etc. They need creativity in midfield but I doubt Scolari recognises that fact. It would take an exceptional manager to lead a relatively mediocre group of players to the World Cup title and Scolari is not the man for the job.

CBF politics. The new president never liked Mano Menezes, who was a protegee of the CBF Director of Football Andrés Sanches. Andrés Sanches had been president of Corinthians and was still linked to the club, and got the job at CBF under the Ricardo Teixeira term.

The new CBF president had been president of São Paulo FC, a traditional rival of Corinthians. He did not like Andrés Sanches nor Mano Menezes. He wanted both out, but needed a good replacement for him.

Brazil never had a foreign coach, so a good foreign coach was out of the picture. And all the good ones in Brazil were hired and with contracts. So the new president waited and allowed Mano to keep doing his job.

When Scolari was sacked from Palmeiras, it was the opportunity they needed to get rid of Mano and Sanches. It is  95% likely they were already in talks with Scolari and Parreira long before sacking Mano.

When they closed the terms of the deal with Scolari, they sacked Mano, even though Mano was starting to do real progress with the Seleção.

In common between Dunga, Mano and Felipão: all the three are from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil´s southernmost state.

ps: Dunga´s real name is Carlos Bledorn Verri and Mano´s real name is Antonio Venker Menezes. Rio Grande do Sul is a land of german and italian descendants, and that also shows in its football and coaches. Grêmio fans cheer a good tackle more than a dribble.
