US Football Fan Here. Visiting London for 1st Time

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Name is Mark and I am from the US.  Originally from South Carolina (Charleston), but currently live in Mickey Mouse World, Orlando, Florida.

I grew up playing football (soccer .. "why do we call it that? ") since I was 4 and love the beautiful game.  I really have no EPL team that I pull for, but I love watching it across the pond.  I am taking an impromptu first visit to London starting Monday and see that Chelsea will be hosting Tottenham (my friend's fav team for some reason).  I am going to gladly pull for the home team but had a few questions:

Anyone suggest a good place to get a good deal on a ticket?

Any pubs close by that I need to go to?

Do people gather anywhere before games to drink/cookout beforehand?

I am traveling solo, but would love to meet up with some of you fun fans to have a pint and share a laugh.

Also if you know of anyone with free floor space May 14th, Id be appreciative.  Thats my last night in London.

Best bet is to turn up before kick off and buy tickets off someone selling them outside but be warned they will be very expensive.

As for pubs there are loads about and will be filled with Chelsea fans. Just pop in one and im sure people will make you feel welcome. Just tell them you hate Spurs and cant wait for Rafa to leave.

People dont really meet for a "cookout" like in NFL games. Its more meet your mates in the pub before the game for a few pints.

As for floor space. Im not sure how many people would be willing to do that for a total stranger but you never know!

Like Uno said, it's a totally different vibe to the US - no tailgating as such, but if you go to a few of the pubs near the ground, Imperial would be your best bet for atmosphere, you'll enjoy some pre-match singing etc.

It'll be very unlikely you could get a ticket at face value, so be prepared to spend at least 200 - 300 pounds if you're gonna pick one up from someone outside the ground.

I'll be at the game so closer to the time I'll PM you some more details, and keep my eye out if anyone I know has a spare.

Cheers

Your best bet is buying a ticket from a tout or 'scalper' outside the ground. It'll set you back about $900 mind you.

As for floor space, try sleeping under a bridge?

Thank you for the responses.  Jones thanks for looking out for me.  My email is [email protected]  if you think of any other options for me. I really appreciate it..

I checked viagogo which has some reasonable tickets left, however. I need to have a membership with true blue to be able to purchase these it seems.. is that correct?

thanks again.

That is correct. You need to become a member of the Chelsea True Blue Club. Then you can participate in a ticket exchange w/ another True Blue Member. I know, cause that was how I purchased my ticket back in Sept. If you do goto the match, there is no tail-gating, but you can goto a pub & have a pint or two, then go strolling down Fulham Road. It will give you goosebumps ;) BTW, have your buddy refrain in wearing any spudz gear or cheering when spudz do anything positive. He will be in the Hall of the Enemy The rivalry w/ spudz & CFC 15x times more intense than the one w/ the Red Sox & Yankees.
