Midseason ratings

Featured Replies

Here's BellettiBullet's midseason ratings for every Chelsea player so far. This is based on the MOTM awards I have awarded plus every players' overall gameplay from 2013. If you don't agree, say so but be nice ;)

Petr ÄŒech - 8/10, MOTM awards - three. On the occasions when we conceded from set pieces, you could rarely fault him. He started off the season as our best player and has been steady between the sticks since.

Branislav Ivanović - 7/10, MOTM awards - two. Our most reliable player this season a lot of the time. He saves goals, not normally by a last-gasp clearance off the line, but by a clean, hard tackle and quick clearance down the line. Forget his crossing, he's been an eight for me.

Ashley Cole - 6/10, MOTM awards - one. Had his best game against the Spuds and I'm not sure if Dave is a better left back or not. Has been unlucky to be out of the team so often but expect him to be back in soon. Overall, he is a menace to many teams when he gets forward.

David Luiz - 7/10, MOTM awards - none. Has probably been very unlucky not to get a MOTM award yet. He doesn't make as many mistakes as people think and is probably the best long passer from the back that we've got. At times, he was at fault for our goals but it is hard to disagree that this guy is a talent.

Michael Essien - 5/10, MOTM awards - none. Okay, forget the Southampton game, the score is basically because he hasn't been on the field long enough to wow us like he did back in his day. Whenever he has been on, especially in the League Cup and recently against Crystal Palace, he has been steady and effective.

Ramires - 7/10, MOTM awards - one. Doesn't get the accolades he sometimes deserves because he just has not been the BEST player on the pitch enough. Yet, the Brazilian is a sublime talent and we are a far lesser team when he's not on, I believe.

Frank Lampard - 7/10, MOTM awards - two. Against Hull City on the opening day and recently against Arsenal, the vice-captain has impressed me greatly. He barely makes errors and will always come up with something that wows everyone.

Fernando Torres - 7/10, MOTM awards - two. I know this is going to be criticised but this season, Fernando Torres just has not been 'so-so' for me. Granted he does miss the odd chance but surely we must prefer that to the times in the past where he never shot? Link-up play has been impressive.

Juan Mata - 7/10, MOTM awards - one. The reason I give a seven is due to the fact that this guy will not play for a while, then come back and immediately dazzle. Expect him to shine in the latter half of the season...if he starts more.

Oscar - 9/10, MOTM awards - four. There's just something I like about such a skilful player who tackles as willingly and as effectively as Oscar. A little terrier of a player who can pass, cross, score, set up and can play his way out of any dilemma.

John Mikel Obi - 6/10, MOTM awards - none. Has, on a couple of occasions, been second or third best player on the pitch. I do like watching Mikel play because of his calmness on the ball and, although he does get a fair share of critics, I just don't see him being a player who let's us down. Just reliable, nothing spectacular.

André Schürrle - 7/10, MOTM awards - one. I know you're going to think I'm crazy but I didn't give him MOTM against Stoke City (went for JT). However, that is not to say Schürrle has not impressed me. He's a player who does the job expected of him and just that little bit more. Good awareness and comfortable on the ball.

Kevin De Bruyne - 5/10, MOTM awards - none. Just hasn't had the opportunities so far. Did impress me early in the season and against Sunderland in the League a Cup and there is enough there to suggest he can be a good player for Chelsea in the future.

Eden Hazard - 9/10, MOTM awards - five. A simply brilliant start. It is easy to say he's had a good season just because he's playing well at the moment but the Belgian has been good since day one. Mata, Willian, Schürrle, even Oscar every now and then, can be rotated but you would not want Hazard out of the team. For me, our best player this season...enough said.

Demba Ba - 6/10, MOTM awards - none. It's probably down to opportunities that Ba isn't rated the same as Torres. I love watching him play and he has shown everyone of the talent he possesses with some typical centre forward displays so far.

Willian - 7/10, MOTM awards - two. Of all the summer signings this season, I would put Willian as the best so far. Two MOTMs and he has been close many times to getting more. He possesses a neat passing ability and is good at bringing others into the game.

Mark Schwarzer - 6/10, MOTM awards - one. I wanted so much to give him a seven but I'll settle for a high six. A good pickup so far, three clean sheets and a MOTM in another game. As Pat Nevin said, if something happens to ÄŒech, I'm not even concerned.

Gary Cahill - 6/10, MOTM awards - none. At first, I was astonished when I realised he had not been our best player once this season but, although he has been very solid, on second thought, I'm not surprised. Has been to blame for a couple of goals but mostly, he is a typical English centre half who you love having in your team.

John Terry - 7/10, MOTM awards - two. By far our best centre back this campaign. Even in the defeats, JT has impressed me (Newcastle United and Stoke particularly). Unlucky not to receive a bit more credit for the displays when we win but that is mainly because the attacking players have had something to say about that. I applaud you, skipper. Well done.

César Azpilicueta - 6/10, MOTM awards - none. A high six. At first in his Chelsea career, I likened him to Paulo Ferreira but I can't remember the great man ever being chosen over Ashley Cole. The Liverpool game is evidence that it truly doesn't matter where he is played, Dave will not stop performing at a consistent, reliable, yet unspectacular level...that there is similar to Paulo.

Samuel Eto'o - 7/10, MOTM awards - one. Sometimes, he is world-class. Other times, the game does pass him by...but who cares, especially when, at the end of the day, you have him in your team? It's such a good feeling when he scores and he can still settle a game on his own.

Can't be rated: van Ginkel, Kalas, Bertrand.

Yes, I know. Some of these ratings have surprised me...like Eto'o higher than Dave. Torres on par with JT? However, one thing that is a big settler in these ratings debates is the sad fact that winning games (i.e. goals or assists) is just about everything. I have tried to ignore that as much as I can but it can be hard. As I said, be nice and if you don't agree, by all means say so.

Happy New Year and go Blues,

BB

Yeah, Luiz probably is a high six or low seven. I'll go either way with that one.

On, Hazard, hard to say he's not been perfect, hey? :)

Ramires and JT, eight? Yep, I can agree with that...but for me, high sevens.

JT and Azpi should be 8, definitely.

I would give Oscar a 7.5. I love him for his work rate and I know he's only young, but the role he plays, I'd like to see more from him in a creative sense.

A list of top clear cut chances created this season.

.

Ivanovic for me  have been a 6 this season. He is usually the only Chelsea player to get lots of space on his right hand side, but his passing and crossing have in most situations killed our attacking play. His positioning on defensive set pieces have also not been good, his latest involvement against Suarez on Liverpools freekick goal is a good example.

Azpilicueta I think is a 6 on left back and 7/8 on right back. His crosses on right back has unlike Ivanovic got us two goals in the latest games and his defending have been solid. His attacking play on the left is none existant, wich is why I rate him lower there.

A.Cole - 5 :  Dissapointing seasons for A.Cole so far, seems to lack pace and struggles both in attack and defence.

I would give all our strikers 5-6 tops and probably wouldn't rate KDB at all since he haven't got a fair chance to impress yet. Rest I agree with :)

I don't see how anyone can say any of our strikers are having as good a season as some of the rest. Azpilicueta has been better than the 3 of them combined. Our strikers deserve a 4 or 5 at most.

Disagree with a fair few of your numbers but agree with the comments, you've just been a bit kind to some of the newer unproven players and less kind to some of the workhorses! Let's hope for 8s and 9s all round by the end of the season!

Hazard, Terry and Oscar 9

Ivan, Azpi, Ramires and Cahill 8

Cech, Frank, Willian and Schurrle 7

Mata, Cole, Luiz, Eto'o, Torres, Ba and Mikel 6

My ratings are probably more a reflection to what was expected of the given player and how have they responded more than their actual statistical ratings.

Big concern is we have some key players with low ratings especially the strikers. Even though the boys try it is not enough at this level that is why I can't give higher rating than 6 to any of them.

i would definitely rate JT and Dave higher. but a good read, and some fair assessments of the players' contributions so far. good work! i'll give you 8/10 Belletti! (the highest rating a belletti has ever got from me, incidentally)

Cheers for the feedback, guys. Love what you've all had to say and can agree with everyone's point of views :)

By the way, just noticed Branislav had a 7/10 but I said he's been an eight for me haha. Will go with seven for him :)
