Who in the blue he'll is Mario pasalic

Featured Replies

i wondered this exact same question. no doubt the answer in 5 years time will be: "oh yeah, he's that kid we signed who never played for the club, but we loaned him out a few times and finally managed to sell him for a couple of mil"

...like we need another one of those!

Why would we not need to make money?

Five facts about imminent Chelsea signing Mario Pasalic

What can we tell you about the teenager from Hajduk Split?

Chelsea are on the cusp of signing Mario Pasalic, an 18-year-old Croatian talent from Hajduk Split.

A deal in the region of €2-3 million is being mooted for the player - and he will then be likely to go back to Hajduk on loan.

So what can we tell you about him?

Here are five facts on the talented midfielder...

1) Despite being a Croatian international at under-16, under-17 and under-19 level - Pasalic was actually born in the German city of Mainz.

He could however be set for a shock call-up to the Croatian national team for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

2) His long-awaited debut for the club was expected to be made at the beginning of the 2012-13 season.

Unfortunately it was delayed after he picked up a serious case of Staphylococcus which kept him out for the majority of the campaign.

He eventually made his league debut for the club on April 14th 2013.

3) He has since gone on to be a very impressive member of the team. In his 16 league games for the club this season he has managed to score six goals - which quickly alerted big teams to his potential services.

4) As well as Chelsea he has also been a transfer target for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Eintracht Frankfurt and in particular Lazio.

Lazio apparently agreed a deal with the player last week - but did not meet the clubs valuation so he re-entered the market - and was snapped up by Chelsea.

5) At 6ft 1ins he is not your atypical ‘next Modric’ type.

In fact he has more resemblance in playing style to a former Chelsea player - German legend Michael Ballack.

Here he is scoring an inventive goal against fierce rivals Dinamo Zagreb…

Exactly! I wonder why people always get angry to the club for picking up young prospects. It is good for the young player and good for the club. They get the step-up and we might get a great player for the future or a nice transfer fee if it doesn't work out; read De Bruyne.

I don't even see an unethical point here. Rich clubs have been rich in the past as well. Ask the young player if he wants the move to Chelsea or not.

Did he actually sign?  Most of the reports I can find are "due to sign" and the like.  Can't find any reliable reports saying it's a done deal.  Can anyone provide a link?

On the bbc that he signed

Searched and still can't find it!

Mario PaÅ¡alić is een Kroatisch voetballer die bij voorkeur als offensieve middenvelder speelt. Hij speelt momenteel bij HNK Hajduk Split op huurbasis van Chelsea FC.

This text is from the all-knowing Dutch Wikipedia, that says Pasalic was set to go to Lazio, but signed for Chelsea on the final transfer day. Loaned back to Hajduk Split for the duration of this season at least.

Well, if Wikipedia says so....

Sooooooo Sky Italia, some Croatian paper and wiki (unreferenced).  Nothing else.  Not on Chelsea website.

Seems like he hasn't signed then!

It seems he hasn't, but will in July, thats why no announcement.

Excuse my cynicism but I'll wait until there's something a bit more solid than a website I've never heard of quoting the player and his agent!  Not that it really matters much but I like to have things substantiated.

And I love that his agent said  "we have insisted that until then he remains at Hajduk"  as though they are in the driving seat!
