RIP to the Heysel victims, 29 years on

Featured Replies

Just a reminder that 29 years ago today, the worst act of hooliganism was committed by English fans, specifically fans of Liverpool football club, that resulted in the death of 39 peopele and over 600 other injured. Chelsea fans were of course blamed for this by the Liverpool chairman at the time. But that was to be expected from a club like them. This tragedy also led to English clubs facing a lengthy ban from European competition. It pretty much disgraced the country in the eyes of the football community and the world at large. Don't ever forget English football's real tragedy.

Its nice to see that it was splashed across the front pages with Independent Investigations called for repeatedly to discover the real reasoning behind the tragedy.... Oh Wait.

The Old Lady hasnt thrown any accusations around, blaming everyone in the world. Thats how to stay classy.

You stay classy then, it's not my style.

I just find it unsettling that Chelsea fans get diatribe thrown at us for not being active capaigners for the JFT96, when Liverpool barely even recognise a tragedy they had a major part of. Although I admit blame was as much the fault of stadium dilapidation and Juve Ultras as it was Liverpool fans. The Hillsborough inquests have gone on now for 20 years, multiple inquests until Liverpool heard what they wanted to hear. Hysel on the other hand passes each year without multiple page spreads, BBC Panorama News reports on repeat, Juventus has managed to move on from the tragedy, I hope Liverpool can too.

This is why, when a LFC fan says we ain got no history I simply reply I'd rather have no history than your sordid one....even though we have a very rich history in its own right, our wealth is in the fans not past trophies.

Ay their fans are scum. They couldn't handle the gerrard chants after the match in April, so they started to fight Chelsea fans. Then they blamed the fight on a Chelsea fan spitting on the memorial for the 96. Which of course was a lie. They threw that accusation at United, Everton, and City before. They use the tragedy immorally and then complain when fans don't show the respect they want. Can't have it both ways.

They can't seem to move on. Every year is the same thing over and over again.

I remember watching this on the telly, was mental to see it go down live.

Dippers have always been hypocritical/ double standards

Scallys only went away to Europe to rob, loot and cause mayhem. They certainly did 29 years ago although the Eyties

did provoke them just a little bit

Sad none the less

I'm 30. I'm not old enough to really remember football during the 70s and 80s. What I do know is this could have been any Football team In the country at the time. Especially Chelsea. There were multiple failings in this Hillsborough as in Hysel. Stadium design bad policing. But Liverpool fans and Liverpool as a whole refuse to admit hooliganism played a part in Hillsborough. I not sure we'd have got the same level of media love if it was us, "the infamous Chelsea Head Hunters strike again."

If they had any humility about the situation I could sympathize unfortunately they are too happy to blame the policing and the Sun newspaper.

So was this thread started to honestly remember those that passed at the Heysel tragedy, or simply as an excuse to have a pop at Liverpool fans?

It's kind of hard to tell really.

Kinda does both succinctly.

Don't think it's all that hard to tell to be fair!

RIP the 39

RIP, not a mention of it on any of the English news sites but thanks for the reminder, things like this always put football in real perspective.

Shocking images that night shown on TV

RIP to those who died.

The 80s contained some of the the best and worst days of my life. Will never forget the aftermath or shame of that night.
