Mourinho's tactics is very different from Van Gaal's. Van Gaals philosophy (This philosophy might be some predecessors - I dont know ) of possession based attack is followed by Frank De Boer, Ronald Koeman, Cocu and Pep  (Maybe more). The following were part of the coaching staff or players who absorbed his philosophy. I think this was called the BarcAjax model. Mourinho who was also part of the same management - And he was the odd one out.

 

Van Gaal was overtly technical and offense minded. Sometimes he did not pay attention to the defensive weak links while planning formations and game strategy and it was Mourinho who actually called out Van Gaal and pointed out the flaws in the strategy. Infact, It was this attribute of Mourinho that impressed Van Gaal. 

 

Van Gaal is more a possess the ball kinda guy - The death by Football that Pep is attributed with. Mourinho is the ani theisis for this. His philosophy is that, the one with the football has higher chances of making mistakes and the one who makes less mistakes usually end up winning the game. Defense and counter attack is Mourinhos philosophy. 

 

Also as far as Man Management goes. Van Gaal was also about his philosophy and he had many high profile fights with players throughout his history and he has still won. Mourinho, only had a falling out with players in Real (Season 3) and this Chelsea team (this season).

 

They are still winners and will continue to win - Even with Van Gaal, while a lot of money was spent but he did not get the players to implement his philosophy. As stupid as it may sound considering the amount of money spent, I feel that this is true. The best thing sadly is to give Van Gaal more time with these players.
