February 19, 201610 yr One year of failure and he'll be known as a useless Conte. Edited February 19, 201610 yr by Peckham Blue
February 19, 201610 yr Author I was always under the impression that Conte actually favored the 433, he only used the 352 because of the lack of good fullbacks and wingers Huventus had. Same with Italy where they had better center backs than fullbacks and better midfielders than wingers. Like FC said, it's far more likely he will adapt and I think it's the 433 that would be more promiment. I believe I'm right in saying that his preferred formation is 424 and then he adjusted to a 352 because, as you say, Juventus's squad lent itself to that. He did move to a 433 a few times but now with Italy he seems to be in 352 mode. I don't quite agree with the idea that 352 is unable to work in this league either. Conte's high pressing style might mesh well with the teams in this league. Whether he does choose 352 or 433 or even some other variation, the holes in the squad are roughly the same. We need at least one midfielder in the mould of a Vidal or Essien and we need at least one centre-back. My opinion is that to actually mount a convincing title challenge we need far more than that though.

Wracking my brain and prepared to be corrected but I can't think of one side that has ever been successful here employing 3/5/2. Even though Robson had some success with it at Italia 90. Not sure why but every team playing it here has been cruelly exposed after deploying it a few games and reverted to type. Would be surprised if we used it in the league though European competition maybe different.
February 19, 201610 yr Thought conte was pretty strict with his 352, so I'm actually pretty excited to hear he is quite flexible, as I think going 3 at the back would be risky and wouldn't suit alot of the current squad. I just hope whoever comes in has us playing some exciting football tbh.

The key is finding players for it and having someone who knows how to install it, like any formation would. I have no doubt it could work if Conte was afforded the right players. Zouma and Dave would be excellent as the outside CBs and pre 2016 Matic would be great as the dropping DM. Baba could definitely be a LWB as well. With all the teams who use only one forward, 3 at the back wouldnt be such a bad option, we've reverted to it a few times and looked much more dangerous going forward IMO. That said we're missing a striker, a RWB, a CB and at least 1 CM. I think Conte would just adopt a regular back 4 if he signed on rather than try to fit a square peg in a round hole. Id trust him over Simeone if we arent prepared to spend a lot of money this summer.
February 20, 201610 yr a certain spanish waiter might fancy a return to the prem..... And I fancy Cara Delevigne. But the chances of either me or Benitez getting our wishes are slimmer than a beanpole on a crash diet.
February 20, 201610 yr I think if we get Conte (and I believe that's more than likely) we'll see him utilise a 433/424 formation. 352 doesn't lend itself to PL football as LVG has found out. Maybe in Europe but it's looking slim we'll make the Europa this season. 433: Teebo Azpi Zouma Gaz Baba Cesc Matic Nainggolan (or similar high intensity MF) Willian Costa Hazard We'll need the high intensity CM (Nainggolan/similar) Striker CB Ideally, all new signings should be established Internationals. I know people will say we can't get them without CL football but we are a big club that's been hugely successful in recent years so it's not as if we've suddenly lost all our appeal. We have enough young players with potential. We need players who have 'been there, done it'. This should also stop our current XI resting on their laurels
February 20, 201610 yr Hi everyone, don't want to intrude - I'm a long-time lurker, full-time Juve fan and part-time Chelsea follower (my dad used to have a season ticket back in the Ranieri days). I just thought I'd pop in to clarify some Conte-related things. Conte's favourite formation (he has frequently admitted this himself during interviews) is an attacking 4-4-2, almost a 4-2-4, with very high wingers. He played this formation during his early years in management, with clubs like Bari and Siena, and was very successful with it. He then tried to implement this when he initially joined Juve, but he couldn't get it to work, primarily because the wingers that were already at the club or that had just been signed weren't good enough (Eljero Elia and Krasic, for instance). This formation also didn't make the best use of Juve's midfield, especially with the emergence of Vidal, who had just been signed (Conte started out with a Pirlo-Marchisio midfield duo, but Vidal was simply too good to be on the bench). So after a couple of matches he switched to a 4-3-3, with Marchisio-Pirlo-Vidal in midfield and a front three of Pepe (starting wide on the right), Matri (as the traditional centre forward), and Mirko Vucinic starting wide left but drifting central and linking play (I guess Hazard could play this role, theoretically). He played this for just over half of his first season at Juve. He then moved to a 3-5-2 as he felt that this gave his side more control and exploited his team's strongest points (3 superb central defenders, and 3 superb central midfielders) whilst minimising their poorer aspects (a lack of strength on the wings and up front). He has since used all three formations with Italy. In summary, he's not really tied to a 3-5-2 in the way that many people in the English football world seem to think, and has demonstrated great ability and willingness to change his tactical approach to suit the players in his squad.

Brilliant insight there mate. You should definitely post more. I like the sound of Conte even more if he's willing to be a bit more flexible although I'd be interested to see what he went with if he came here. Yes we are geared more towards a 4231 there's so much scope for that to change because we have so many gaps to fill this summer. If he did come in I'd like to see what he did with that freedom.
February 21, 201610 yr I think hazard would become expendable if conte came. He doesn't score enough goals to play as a second striker, and I don't think he would be good enough defensively to play either wide or centrally. Maybe go with something like this: ---------------Courtois - ----------Ivanovic-zouma-ake - Willian--------fabregas----------baba - ----------Gundogan-----xhaka - -------------Costa----cavani It would probably mean us selling hazard and oscar, and azpiliucueta would only play in games where we needed a more defensive wing back. I think right and left centre back need to be comfortable defending wide which cahill isn't. Willian as a Wing back. Come on now!!
February 21, 201610 yr Why is Pellegrini a bad appointment? He has won a lot with City has he not? He also plays an attacking brand of football that our players would enjoy. Pellegrini has always had good tactics and we could use a manager that frees up his players. Get Pellegrini and buy Juan Mata back when Mourinho sells him. Pellegrini often has plan A but never a back up. He is naive in europe, often deploying 2 strikers and being outnumbered in midfield. He is also a city reject who has the charisma of a banana. Thats why he would be a poor choice. As for Mata, i love the guy, but what has he done at united to warrant being bought back? Has the odd good game but still lacks the physical scope and moibility for the PL and there are so many better options.
