June 21, 20242 yr A few pictures from the 1974 World Cup Finals. I was just getting into football aged seven and this was ‘my first tournament’. The fact that Scotland had qualified meant there was lots of excitement up here, despite the team’s early exit.

June 23, 20242 yr Remember watching the bbc highlights in my aunts house in Edinburgh late on the Saturday night. There were only two live games of this amazing tournament. A group game and the Final broadcast live in Britain. ITV didn’t show anything. The bbc decided for some strange reason, just to broadcast two live games and show highlights of the others . The price of 20 cigarettes cost 3 shillings and 7 pence, which in todays terms is £3.80. So that is very close to the cost of the ticket price back in December 1954. The price of a ticket for Scotland v Croatia in November 2024 is as far as I can see is from £75.00!

It's strange that some items cost a lot more nowadays and others not. I've never smoked but the last time I checked a packet of 20 cigarettes cost £13. A pint of beer in 1954 was 1s and 10d which is equivalent to £1.90 nowadays. In most pubs a pint is about £4.50 at the cheapest with probably on Wetherspoons charging a lot less. I remember when beer went up to £1 a pint me and my mates said we would drink less. That didn't last long!

June 24, 20242 yr After they stopped playing full-time but at their peak two great defenders. I would place them in the top 10 defenders of all time.

Certainly the two best Italian defenders I've ever seen. Baresi in his prime was a beast and Maldini was simply the best defender in the world.
