Am I right in saying Rio wasn't even booked for this?

Utterly disgusting, almost makes me sick to my stomach.

He hit his OWN fans? HORRIBLE! This should be more than a red card...it should have several games out and a huge fine. Doing something to other players on the pitch is one thing, does it to fans is quite another.

Even more, I didn't even see this in any replay of the show.

It actually knocked the poor woman flying?

The guy looked back for his Mrs, to see she was missing!

What an idiot that man is! Get your knickers in a twist and boot it as hard as you can at your own fans? Really want that title don't you Rio!!

See him raise his hand to acknowledge, before spitting and shouting at the ref. Thats alright Rio, knock a poor lady flying by a full force football to the face, and also probably injuring her back aswell from the fall.. then just raise your hand.

Either I missed it, or theres not much in the media either? Funny that?

er, hold on, we know rio is an idiot, and yes he should have been booked for dissent, but let's not get ahead of ourselves- it's hardly out of the ordinary for a player to kick the ball away and he was unlucky to have connected with it properly and see it hit someone. he then spent a good deal of time apologising more than once.

this thread all sounds far too excessive. it's hardly grounds to hang him.

(saying "bbbrrrrraaaaaappppp" to the sky cameras when someone else scores a goal... that's another matter)

I agree it was only a bookable offence - he didn't look up, spot the crowd and aim right at them - he just lashed out in petulance. I am not saying I think it should have been a red card, just can't understand how both the ref and the linesman managed to miss it and not book him.

I completely disagree with the latest comments.

If a player lashes out and kicks and launches a ball into a fans head, there is no excuse. I do see players kicking balls out all the time, but not with such ferocity, and not at a fan 10 feet away. That is simply attacking a fan.

Based on the fact that the football authorities believe that players celebrating goals by getting close to their own fans constitutes a risk to crowd safety then Rio's actions, petulance or not constitutes stronger action. I'm not saying that is the right thing to do, merely pointing out that the authorities have got their priorities totally wrong and this incident is a prime example of that. Of course Rio should have been booked for this and if the referee and linesmen missed the incident then the video panel should have been called in to deal with accordingly.

I'm with you Mr.Hedges..

He knew the fans were there, No he didnt obviously do it on purpose, but did he think about it before he done it, nope! Thats lack of respect, and was obviously going to hurt someone. If a shot at goal spins miles wide and hits someone - different story.

Always thought Rio was a prick anyway. Ever seen him on that show where they play tricks on members of the England squad? He tries to talk and act like he's a proper bad boy, but just comes across as a complete tosser instead.

no, kicked the ball at the advertising, and missed. that is the key distinction you have to make, and plainly, it was not an "attack".

before the game's at the bridge the chelsea attacking players take shots at cudicini. often they hit it hard, and often they miss and hit it into the stand. attack?

and I don't think he should be punished just because the FA are often moronic in deciding who or what to punish- it sets a precedent that should be avoided, and if anything things like this should be tidied up and more common sense used instead of imploring the FA to continue with theur stupidity.

it's g4's fault, as you know.

Yes, we know! icon_wink.gificon_lol.gif

BTW...isn't it a bookable offence if you kick the ball after the ref has whistled to stop the play? Strikers who are flagged offside and shoot the ball into the net after the ref has whistled, often get booked. Not sure what the rules of the game say, though. icon_confused.gif

It is a bookable offence Maksimov and I can only imagine the ref didn't see it which is why he wasn't booked.

The question is whether it should actually be a red card offence in this particular case. Initially I thought not for the reasons I have detailed aboove however the mroe I think about it the more I think it should be. The reason being that this wasn't just kicking the ball away, it was reckless. OK he didn't deliberatley aim at a particular fan but he is a professional footballer and therefore knows:

a) How hard he can kick a ball

:BAnD: Where the fans sit

c) Where the ball is going to end up if he wellies it like that

So I change my mind - I think it does merit a red card.
