Some Perspective On Our Potentially Departing Players

just a few thoughts to ponder as we read daily about other clubs lining up to take our players (Lamps, Carvalho, Carlo, etc.)

with the exception of Terry, it's worth remembering that we raided another club to acquire everyone on our roster.

with the exception of Terry, every player on our team has worn the jersey of another club before joining us.

why should we think that a player is committed to us for life when he abandonded another club to join us? why should we think that we are immune from other clubs coveting our players when we coveted other players in order to get them to join us?

were any of you sympathethic for Porto fans when we stole away Carvalho? or for Spammer fans when we stole away Lampard (and Joey Cole)?

But, when Chelsea become interested in making signings from whoever...with the club's financial strength and backing of RA, the amount of clubs with the exception of maybe 4 or 5(Worldwide), would sell anyway, plus any individual player's negotiated financial package would be enough to sway a move...

Prime example: SWP.

Was/Is he worth £21 million......i don't think so.

its how its always been

it doesnt matter how good they are, or how much as fans we love them

players come and players go

there will always be another chelsea hero/legend in the making

Don't really understand your point MannyJello. Of course weve taken players from other clubs but look at what we paid, i'll take the 3 you mentioned.

Lamps - 11 million, nearly everyone thought that was to much at the time especially for a player who has treated like sh*t at the club he was at.

Carvalho - 19 million wasnt it?, way too much IMO even if he was been brilliant in the last two seasons

Joey - 6 million o think - was suprised west ham didn't get more but a fair price IMO

If players like drogba, carvalho and especially Lampard left i would be dissapointed but its the prices that other teams are offering that annoyes me. 7 million qouted for lampard is a joke even if he has only got a year left on his contract, tubby wants 15 mill for crouch and he's got a year left as well. If we sell our top players then all i want is a fair price which with the way weve handled other players (crespo, veron) it seem unlikly we'll get any.

Jack, my post was really not focusing on the financial aspect of the transfers, but more about the sentiment that crops up in posts now and again about other teams being less than virtuous when they swoop in for our boys or our departing players stabbing us in the back by leaving, that sort of thing.

I think it's a fair point you're making, we do as fans seem to think that some players (and managers) owe us some degree of loyalty but to actually find that is very rare in the modern game. Lampard is a prime example at the moment, I don't doubt that he's got strong feelings for the club and his team mates and that he'll always think fondly of his time here (I'm speaking like he's already left!). But I wouldn't be suprised and I wouldn't blame him if he were to leave, it's his last chance for a fresh challenge. But what about the club he leaves behind? Well he's been one of our most consistent players for most of his time here, he's dragged us through games that without him we wouldn't have had a chance of winning and we'll miss him if he goes. But we've got a new manager and it might just be time for some of the old gaurd to move on, the team of the last few years have been great and they won back to back PL titles, but it could be that we see a few of our old favourites go, and their replacements go on to even bigger and better achievments, that's just the way football is.

You don't need to know anything about football to see the sense of what MJ is saying. How many of you intend to stay in the same job for life? Why expect a footballer to do so? As long as they are loyal to a club while they are playing for it, that's all we're entitled to expect. And how long are clubs loyal to players once they have outgrown their usefulness?

Considering Man U paid £30m for Ferdinand I'd say that it was a very good deal.

They did however get Ferdinand fairly young and have kept him.

30 million spread over 10 years is less than 19 spread over say 5.

Players I think will leave, and my feelings about them

Lampard...gutted, but leaves with nothing but admiration from me

Pizarro....you're still here?

Anelka.......stop-gap signing anyway

SWP....never good enough

Haim....never even close to good enough

Drogba....One and a half good seasons since you've been with us merely cover how selfish and petulant you really are, goodbye!

Bridge...See Lampard

Sidwell.....See SWP

This will leave us for room for regulars to really become regulars and step up. It also will hopefully allow some youngsters to come to the fore, and sign just a couple of juicy attackers/strikers

Pretty accurate I feel. Although i think Scolari's sysyem would suit Anelka down to the ground and so Felipe may wish to try him out - at least until January. There may be more to come from Sidwell also...tell you what swap Sidweel from your list for Malouda and we have a deal. ;)

That's twice today I've seen mention of Bridge leaving, but he signed a new four year contract halfway through last season so I can't see it. He's clearly content to play second fiddle to Cashley so why would Scolari want to get rid of him?

Virtually spot on !!!

I also think that Makalele will probably move on, with my greatest admiaration and Carvalho, whilst I hope I am wrong, may choose a new challenge with Jose. He would take a hell of a lot of replacing and i am not sure that there is anybody out there good enough to replace him.

I feel he will leave and i'll be gutted of he does. Untill he gave that penalty away against sp*rs alot of people thought he should be first choice, but since then i can only remember him playing a handfull of times.

I would not be sad to see Drogba go as his petulant nature makes him anoy me too much.

I think SWP is better than we have seen and feel the new manager will have him in his plans.

Lampard is an odd one for me as he pisses me off for not sorting things out and pledging his future to the club that have made him.

I think Deco may struggle in the prem and is primaraly a CL signing.

I'm not that fussed about Drogba's petulant nature, which. like his diving has been blown up out of all proportion by the media - not that I'm saying he doesn't dive, but according to them, Drogba is the biggest cheat in the entire game and Saint Stevie G is a f**king saint, as long as he does the business on the pitch.

I think SWP has had more than his fair share of chances. He's inconsistent and wasteful, and nowhere near as good as his father makes him out to be.

Lampard: If he's got to go he's got to go.

And as for Deco being a signing for the Champions League, I seem to remeber the same was said about Ballack.
