I still stand by that he is already a better player than Mikel. I guess after a couple of not so bright sub apperances and with Essien coming back AVB wanted to use the older players.
I was surprised he didnt play on Tuesday actually. Maybe its his attitude in training or something we just dont get to see.

Stats can be twisted how ever you like. You can see that Mikel isnt all that in every game he plays in.

Statistics can be selectively chosen in order to support a particular argument, however that blogger has performed a study to see who the best passers in the Premier League are (as in he is genuinely asking the question for the sake of knowing it rather than trying to defend a particular agenda), and then redefined his search to forward passes. Mikel is right at the top for both.
It also highlights John Terry's fantastic (and underrated) long passing ability which can never be a bad thing.

If Mikel plays like he did last night (and under Hiddink) then he's more than worthy of starting for any Chelsea side (bar when we had Maka). The problem is he goes for long stretches as a laboured player making tedious passes when we're craving quick ball circulation. We've seen him do what we need from a DMC before and I just don't understand why he isn't consistent about it. Romeu and Mikel (the good one) competing for that position would be great for us.
I feel Romeu is the better player, with a higher ceiling, but we haven't seen him for a while and he's much to young to rely upon absolutely. We could easily burn him out if we thrust him into the thick of it. That said, I wish we were seeing more of him lately.

Mikel has played well against Birmingham and Stoke IMO.
Still prefer Romeu though.

I'm beginning to wonder whether we're trying to play a clever game with Romeu. The guy is clearly class however if he continues playing as well and continues to develop at such a fast pace then Barca will want him back under their clause. If we don't play him too often maybe they won't then that means he's ours with no further clauses hanging over him. Can't really believe that's what we're trying to do but nothing would surprise me anymore.

As far as i know they dont have a buy out clause, they have something that stipulates how much they can buy him for for the next 3 seasons ONLY if we want to sell him and if he wants to go.
I think thats what it is, if im wrong then please let me know as id be gutted if we lost another talented young player

On the issue of Tackling, Mikel isn't great and wouldn't be in that, but one thing is for sure, he can make accurate passes out of nothing.
I honestly believe Chelsea and Mourinho killed Mikel creative abilities, being a Nigerian and having the opportunity to watch him since he broke into the stage aged 16, watching him play then, everyone touted him as the biggest thing to happen to Nigerian football, he was much more creative and mercurial than Jay Jay, that was reiterated when he won 2nd best young player behind Messi in 2005, he was all you wanted in a playmaker, vision, creative, ability to read a game and controlling the midfield 90mins non-stop, overall was his passing ability, he was the best in WYC 2005, he outshone Messi and Fabregas in every department as he could anywhere in midfield even as a second strike, the boy was really golden.
Then came his debatable move to Chelsea and Mourinho opted to deploy him in the holding role and much of his creative and playmaking skills began to vanish, except his passing ability, now here we are, crying for a creative central midfielder when we killed a talent who was way ahead of Messi some years back, in playmaking, especially with the kind of football we played in Jose's time.
You can criticize him but we got what we want.
I hope John Obi moves to another club and reinvoke his abilities.
Having said that, he does ok in a more advanced role in Nigerian Jersey, maybe he should be played further up the field with orders to pass forward only.
But, i just hope he rediscovers that magic touch again

An interesting post but I've read so many like that in the past 5 years. What he was like as a player at 16 isn't relevant now and you simply cannot predict how a player will turn out at such a young age, at least 99% of the time anyway.
I don't buy into the role of Mikel as a playmaker , he simply doesn't think quick enough or move the ball quick enough for him us to even think about him being a success in that role.
It's interesting that here we are again, after 2 decent (no more) performances against limited opposition people are talking about him being a potential great player again. Havent we've been here so many times before ? Just wait till a top team really goes for us, then we find out all about him.
Anyway , back to the post above again. I agree with the last bit, I hope for his sake he gets a move and he can start again elsewhere. He certainly has had enough chances here, and now its time for someone else and from what I've seen so far Romeu is a better choice and a better player in every aspect of the position they are both asked to play in.

I have to agree with you about Romeu being better as an overall player, but in the last 2 matches we can see that Mikel has shown the ability to boss a midfield all through.
Romeu is a better player, no doubt, but on last 2 matches, i wouldn't want Romeu in over Mikel especially against a team like Napoli, where you have to make sure they see less of the ball.
Mikel started going downhill since his move to Chelsea, it's no co-incidence, but i wouldn't be so joyous seeing Romeu, u need to see what we have done to talented midfield players in recent years.
McEach, Kakuta, Mikel...maybe more but i just hope this trend doesn't continue and we help our youngsters step upto a greater height
