Quite simply I wouldn't replace him with anyone - not just because of his ability as a player but also because of his attributes as a captain, not just in a first team capacity but also as a club captain in terms of looking out for players from the youth system right up to the 'superstars'

This is a club captain who knows when youth players have their driving test and calls them to wish them luck and then to find out how they have got on. Sounds trivial on a standalone basis but gives you an idea of how he takes his role seriously.

in addition to that, which is why he simply must retire with us, and why we never ever should consider selling (like some did this season), it turns out he's the best defender in the world.

Fantastic player - as good on the ground as he is in the air, great distributer, goal scorer, great tackler, consistent, reliable, intelligent, incredibly brave and as committed as it's possible to be. Genuinely world class defender.

Fantastic captain - leads by example, inspires team mates, organises the defence and team as a whole

Fantastic clubman

All round legend.

If we're going to be critical (which needs to happen, otherwise this thread will be a giant love in for John), I think his best attributes over the past 2 seasons are his captaincy, but mostly, his organizing of the defense, who just seems lost without him bossing people around, telling who to mark at corners and set pieces, and just generally telling people what they should be doing.

Other than that (oh...other than his world class defending), he's pretty rubbish...

He's already achieved legendary status in my mind. came from the Ressies and went on to captain his team. True leader and all that, but I just hope he stays with the club. I'd love for him to be our Maldini, in fact it's strange you bring this up at the same time Maldini retires.

Anyway, he's great!

Scott

And can i admit tht seeing him miss that pen in Moscow made me like the bloke even more. I'd love to see him lift the CL cup over his head infront of thousands of Chelsea fans and stick a big V sign to UEFA

I think he's proven once again that he is one of the very best centre backs there are. While the oft-praised Ferdinand and Vidic were busy kicking lumps out of players or being humiliated by Barca or Torres, Terry was the lionheart at the centre of everything good Chelsea did.

What other centre backs are better?

Marquez?

Ferdinand?

Jamie "sh*t" Carragher? :D
