Florent Malouda Signs New Chelsea Contract

The Frenchman has extended his stay at Stamford Bridge...

Chelsea midfielder Florent Malouda has signed a contract extension with the club.

The winger had two years remaining on his existing deal, which has now doubled in length.

The Blues have been linked with another left-sided player in Russian Yuri Zhirkov, whose arrival could have meant the end of Malouda's Chelsea career.

The Frenchman has since put an end to all speculation surrounding a possible exit from the club, however.

"I can reveal that I have signed a new two-year deal with Chelsea," Malouda told Tele Guyane.

"I am staying. From now on, I have four years left on my contract.

"I know that every time the transfer window opens there are a lot of rumours and I hope in this one people will know what has happened."

Malouda had failed to impress upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge from Lyon in 2007, but has since enjoyed an upturn in form under last season's caretaker manager Guus Hiddink.

Good news. Hope he continues from where he left off last season.

ffs

Dont care that he had half a dozen decent games at the end of the season (no more than decent, lets not go over the top). I am completely underwhelmed by this.

I dont think he is good enough and im sure it will be business as usual come the Autumn.

What next, Kalou on a ten year 100k a week deal ?

Confirmed.

Hopefully, if we sign Zhirkov it'll keep Malouda on his toes and next season he'll pick up right where he left off rather than going back to what we've seen for most of the last two years.

thats a pretty good point. as it stands hes fairly certain of a place in the team, if zhirky baby arrives then he will have a battle. but to be honest i dont seriously think hes a winger, he seems a lot more suited to a second striker position.

My take on this is that whilst I have no problem with us keeping Malouda I fail to see why we have offered him an extension when he still had 2 years to run.

He has already shown himself to be someone who can perform at a very different level depending on who his manager is and how much confidence is placed in him so surely the sensible options would have been to see how he faired under Ancelotti and then decided whether to extend his contract in January.

 someone earlier also made the point that he had a few decent games; I just don't get the decision making at the club atimes. So what happens if he flops next season?! I bet we are also saddled with his increased wages.

You can ask more money for a player when you sell him when he's on a four year deal rather than just two. Didn't we extend Bridge's contract just before we sold him?

wasn't it a 2 year extension as his contract runs out next season? Either way I'm glad, he's showed he is a good player and we shouldn't be letting anyone who will add to the squad, go.

I was ready to ship him out.

Looked lively last few games but few games per season is not good enough.

Anyway, maybe he has got some confidence and hope he keeps it going and starts to perform.

THink he is understanding the fans are not happy when he loses the ball and then cant be bothered to get it back!

We shall see

Interesting, I really hope that he's not the only solution we are looking for on the left side. As much as I've stuck by Malouda, this seems to me that we've kinda shot the load a bit too soon. At the same time, we've not been seeing too much good from Florent when he's been low on confidence. So if we do sign another left sider, then surely that will shoot Malouda's confidence into teh ground again should someone be picked ahead of him

2 years out from the end of the contract is becoming the normal time to renegotiate.

When a player has 1 year left on their contract (i.e. this time next year for Malouda), they have the option of buying out their contract and signing for someone else.

Thats what Lamps almost did last season.

If we sign up players 2 years out, it protects their value. If we want to sell Malouda in 12 months time, we can get a decent fee for him.
