Just home. But before leaving the UK I went to see the King's Speech, and thought it was a wonderful film. Colin Firth outstanding as Bertie/George VI, while Guy Pearce did an excellent David/Edward VIII/Duke of Windsor, getting just the right clipped accent for the voice of the profligate son. The only role that for me let it down was the woman who played Wallis Simpson.

A film to go to if you like joined-up speaking!

I've seen half of it. Going to see the rest tomorrow. Great so far and Colin Firth really deserved his Golden Globe. He's been one of my favourite actors since I first saw "Pride and Prejudice".

Previously not drawn to the film because of the subject matter (I am somewhat squeamish) nevertheless your review has captured my interest. I have added a comment.

My constructive criticisim here (not posted on your blog, of course)is purely on a language level:

1. "Probably hundreds of different camera angles.." is almost like damning with faint praise

2. . The attention TO detail is nothing short of remarkable, which is why this film deserves a lot more praise than it's gotten. You are WELSH, not American!! It deserves a lot more praise than it has received.

3. to put it bluntly - why have you put this in? You haven't said anything bluntly. You've said it's Oscar worthy.

These are just minor little pedantic quibbles - well except for the "gotten" that's a major offence! :laugh2:

So the local cinema near you shows half a film at a time, novel

Yes. It's a new thing they've started for restless people who can't sit still and watch an entire movie if it's longer than an hour.

I have just watched Red Road, a film about a woman whose work involves watching closed circuit cameras to report any possible disturbances. She sees someone from her past and follows him in order to get into his life. We are not told why, but we are aware there is a hidden agenda.

The story takes place in a rough part of Glasgow. There is no background music - the only sounds we hear are what we would hear if we were there - although at the end a ridiculously sloppy Ian Curtis song is played (sorry, Loz)

An interesting film with a very explicit sex scene, which is totally necessary to the story.

Saw "Frankie and Alice" last night with Halle Berry...She plays a stripper with multiple personalities it was ok altghough a bit long drawn out.

I went to the cinema to see Hereafter - a film where Matt Damon is a reluctant medium. It started with some very impressive filming of a tsunami. It wasn't a great film, but not bad. However down the road from the cinema is a "cheap" shop - it sells things that haven;t sold elsewhere, including DVDs. So there for 1 euro 95 each I bought The Boys from Brazil and Osterman Weekend.

I did an eeny meeny miney mo to decide which to watch tonight. I hadn't seen the Boys From Brazil for years and had forgotten how good it was. If there are any youngsters there who haven't seen it, I throughly recommend it. I'll be watching Osterman Weekend tomorrow night.

Great movie and a classic Dogme 95 film. I've also watched an extremely weird film for those of you who are in to that in the same vein. It's called Dogtooth and its a Greek movie about this man who don't let their children out of their compound and somewhat brainwash them. It's quite funny in a dark humour kind of way.

I've also watched Buried which was alright, about an American truck driver in Iraq who was kidnapped and buried in a box with only a cellphone and a lighter. Not great, but interesting enough.

Thank you Krazy Tea. I will just pop into Amazon and check out Dogtooth.

No sooner said than done! It sounds intriguing.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Watched it just now and being a bit of a fan of Resident Evil it was a good watch, lots of action but not really the best story in the world. Recommended if you seen the others and wants to continue the story.

Green Street Hooligans (again)

Was really bored and decided to watch this gem again, even though its about west ham's firm its a brilliant piece of work, has to go down as one of my all time favourites. I suspect that all football fans have watched it and if not do it as soon as possible, great watch. Frodo kicking some arse is always fun.

I would have to say if you are to see Hamlet, i know this is a film thread but you have got to see it live at some point and the recent showing by the RSS is astoundingly good the guy who plays Hamlet is just fantastic brings the story right off the pages.

It's been Télérama week here, so films have been at 3 euros a seat. I've therefore seen three in the last tow days.

The first was White Material, a very harrowing film with Isabelle Huppert acting brilliantly in the main role. It is about an unnamed country in Africa (but very similar to Rwanda ) where a white French coffee farmer refuses to abandon the estate iin the face of rising insurrection. It feels very true to life in that there is often no logic to events - why would there be in that situation, and there is not really a "good side and a bad side". It's difficult to use the word "enjoy" about it, but it was an excellent film.

The second was "Tournée" (On Tour) a sort of comedy but sad at times, about a burlesque group of American strip-tease artists touring France with their French manager. The women are lovely, voluptuous ( and some well past their sell-by dates, but still scrub up well) and feisty. The film was directed by the man who played the manager, and sometimes it was a bit self-indulgent. Probably it went on for about twenty minutes too long - but it wasn't bad.

The third one was superb! An Argentinian film called Il Segreto De Sus Ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes) , it starts with a brutal rape and murder. I don't want to give away any more about it because you should see it for yourselves.

The female lead was a very beautiful older woman (Soledad Villamil) and the male lead was a gorgeous older man (Ricardo Darin).

If I hadn't sworn undying lust for Big G I would be swooning over Ricardo. I bet Val likes him!

With the nominees for the Oscars out I'm trying to see all the nominated movies (or atleast the ones in the bigger categories).

Today I saw "The Fighter". Good movie with a weak main character. Some strong acting performances by Amy Adams, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. The latter two might very well pick up an Oscar each.

Wasn't that movie nominated for an Oscar last year or the year before that? If so then it was one of the movies I was going to see but never did.

Well go and see it now! I intend to buy it on DVD asap!

Just seen "The Social Network". Best movie of the year? Hardly.

I have not seen it yet. What was your major complaint about it? Too wordy and no action? Something else?
