March 3, 201214 yr Bit of a heavy film evening, started with Hard Candy and ended with Eden Lake. Hard Candy was excellent for 90 minutes, but then completely lost me in the last 10 and left me completely disappointed with the ending. It's about a young, 14 year old girl who meets a man online and they meet up and go to his house. Anything else I say is spoilerific so I'll let you find out what happens if you haven't seen as 95% of the film is excellent, Ellen Page is incredible as the young girl. The ending though completely infuriated me. Eden Lake on the other hand was absolutely magnificent. Loved every second of it, a proper gritty, gory, British horror, as good as any horror I've seen in a long, long time. A couple's romantic getaway turns sour and all hell breaks loose. It's incredible, the ending is unreal. Though it made me hate a certain part of the British society even more, mostly due to Jack O'Connell's fantastic turn as the main villain.
March 3, 201214 yr I quite liked it, but it did have some absurd moments. I have a feeling it's a movie I might not like as much on a second viewing. But that first explosives disposal scene was electric. There were some excellent sequences, but as a whole it's not all that great. Maybe I was expecting too much from it, or I was expecting it to be something it doesn't even attempt to be, but I doubt I'll watch it again any time soon. It is better than Avatar, mind you, which was also nominated for the best movie Oscar back then.
March 3, 201214 yr Tintin was quite good. Graphics where awesome I was a bit disappointed in Tintin. I was an avid Tintin comic and book reader when i was a child, and I felt the film was a bit of a hotch potch of several stories. I had expected it to be one of these wonderful films which appeals to children and adults alike, but I came out feeling that this really was more a film for children than for adults.
March 3, 201214 yr Speaking of Ellen Page, Juno is a knockout little movie. Enjoyed that movie. I love Ellen Page too.

Like you, I grew up reading Tintin (in French, no less!) Even in animated films, character is important. They never gave us anything about Tintin himself. He was a blank. Hard to care what happens to a blank. A lot of noise and pretty images, but not much passion. Haddock was a more memorable and effective character because they tried to flesh him out. But he wasn't the main protagonist. I, too, was disappointed.
March 3, 201214 yr Enjoyed that movie. I love Ellen Page too. Yes, I have a perhaps unhealthy, umm, admiration for her.
March 3, 201214 yr Yes, I have a perhaps unhealthy, umm, admiration for her. Nothing unhealthy about that, wxwax - you're a red-blooded male! I'm about to watch Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence for the first time in about 30+ years. Hope it's still as good as I remember it!
March 3, 201214 yr Did you know Ellen Page's first proper acting role was as the daughter ('Treena') of drunk Mr Lahey in the genius Canadian show Trailer Park Boys?
March 3, 201214 yr Did you know Ellen Page's first proper acting role was as the daughter ('Treena') of drunk Mr Lahey in the genius Canadian show Trailer Park Boys? Holy sh*t I knew she looked familiar when I first saw Juno! I'm downloading the series again. Thanks for that, it was bothering me for years.

March 12, 201214 yr I saw an amusing little film tonight. A Belgian film called Hasta la Vista. Three young Flemish lads have still to lose their virginity. Not unusual, you might think, but one of thme is blind, one is in a wheelcahir and the third is totally paralysed. They learn that in Spain there is a brothel which caters specifically for them. They book accommodation, hire a mini-bus and driver, and escape from their parents. The driver turns out to be a woman, who is rather obese, but in spite of that facially very lovely. (OK you men won't believe that is possible, but I think it is) I will reveal no more about the plot, but it is verbally and visually very funny.
March 12, 201214 yr Looks like one title in English is Come As You Are. Don't know what it's called in other countries. Edited March 12, 201214 yr by wxwax
March 12, 201214 yr I watched Martha Marcy May Marlene the other day, on Mark Kermode's recommendation after he was very mysterious about the whole thing, and just said not to read up about it, just watch it. Don't watch it. Thought it was absolute drivel from start to finish, I don't mind ambiguity in films at all, I like it when films leave things open to suggestion, but when the film is made up of 105 minutes of nothing but ambiguity, that's when it starts to get on my nerves. Couldn't stand it. Also watched Hugo with my housemate, which was visually excellent, very Scorcese, but absolutely hated the story. It didn't interest me in the slightest, the fact it's a family film and I'm nearly 20 is not the point, the fact it was up for Best Picture at the Oscars gave me high hopes, but it let me down completely. Finally I watched Little Miss Sunshine for the umpteenth time the other day, absolutely adore that film, it's hilarious and heartfelt, Steve Carell is excellent in it, it's just a fantastic film. Going to watch We Need To Talk About Kevin tonight, another film I have very high hopes for, I just hope it doesn't disappoint.

Do you agree with me that Hugo was only interesting in the third act, when it told the story of Georges Méliès? It seemed to me that his story is what really excited Scorsese. I agree about Little Miss Sunshine. An excellent little social satire with some great characters. I love Alan Arkin, such a good presence in films.
March 12, 201214 yr Just seen the latest version of The Three Musketeers on dvd. sheesh, what a load of crap. Much prefer the late 70's versions with Oliver Reed,Albert Finney,Roy Kinnear,Rachel Welch,(oh yes!) & that bloke with the big hooter. Just another reminder of just what 'quality character' actors bring to a film & what results when they're missing.

March 16, 201214 yr Watching Young Adult right now. In the first half hour I've paused it three times and checked the internet to see what's going on in the world. It's not so much that it's boring. It's that it's very downbeat and Theron's character isn't a very nice person. You know she's probably going to have an awkward scene sometime soon. Helping to deaden the feel is the absence of music -- maybe half of the movie so far has been "natural sound" without music.
March 16, 201214 yr I guess it's supposed to be a black comedy. I think the guy in the Toronto Globe and Mail nailed it. "Plays precariously close to an unfunny sociopathic case study."
March 17, 201214 yr Watching The Rum Diary. Two nights in a row, a movie is failing to hold my attention. This thing is taking a while to get to the point.
March 17, 201214 yr Watching The Rum Diary. Two nights in a row, a movie is failing to hold my attention. This thing is taking a while to get to the point. It was directed by Bruce Robinson, wasn't it? (Withnail and I) I haven't seen the film yet, but I found the same thing with the book. How did you feel when you got to the end of the film?
March 17, 201214 yr It was directed by Bruce Robinson, wasn't it? (Withnail and I) I haven't seen the film yet, but I found the same thing with the book. How did you feel when you got to the end of the film? I wouldn't recommend it. It felt rambly, self-indulgent and, ultimately, contrived. The protagonist's conversion from drunk to crusader was extremely unconvincing. The portrayal of his supposed ethical "journey" was slapdash. Johnny Depp sort of sleepwalked through this one, so low-key he wasn't really there. And the final insult is the deus ex machina epilogue, which served to confirm how weak and pointless the preceding 120 minutes were. Maybe it's a mood thing that someone will enjoy.
