Watched Ice Cold in Alex yesterday. A fine film with a great cast. One of my favourite films set in WW2.

Have watched it many times over the years.

i'm going to watch that one

It's a fine film which shows the harshness of the war in the North African desert. One of the great endings to a film. One of the cast, Anthony Quayle had served with the Special Operations Executive in Albania in WW2. Watching films produced in the forties, fifties and sixties it is worth noting that a number of actors in those films had served in WW2. In addition to Quayle there was Richard Todd, James Stewart, Clark Gable and Charles Bronson. Even a future British Prime Minister, Ted Heath and American President, George H Bush served in WW2.

A great clip. Apparently during the film there were lots of takes of this clip and John Mills was pissed after having had to drink loads of beer.

Watched the latest Indiana Jones film this afternoon. Better than I expected and a lot better than the Crystal Skull film. Good to see John Rhys-Davies and Karen Allen make appearances. Plot was a bit silly in places but a bit of escapism isn't bad. Parts of the film were produced in Glasgow. Only major criticism of the film is that I wasn't impressed with Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Thought that she was poor.

Hated Phoebe…hope she doesn’t end up a female Indy! As for the last 20 mins , ruined it for me.

I think Phoebe was trying to be feisty and it didn't work. Spoke to someone who had also seen the film and she said that Phoebe was wooden. Agree about the last 20 minutes.

Am going to watch Oppenheimer on Tuesday. Looking forward to watching it.

Watched Oppenheimer this afternoon. An excellent film with a great cast. Was especially impressed with the performances of Murphy and Damon. Very thought provoking and one of those films that makes you want to go away to study the topic more. Posed questions about the rights and wrongs of atomic and hydrogen bombs and who makes decisions about how they should be developed and used.

Highly recommended and certainly worth watching. I could easily watch it again and there aren't many modern films I can say that about.

Watched Tora Tora Tora earlier today. Have watched it many times over the years. First saw it in the early seventies. An excellent film with a good cast and an accurate account of events leading up and including the attack on Pearl Harbor. I think that it goes without saying it's a far better film than Pearl Harbor.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - had time to pass on transatlantic flight. I loved Indiana Jones movies as a kid, particularly the last crusade. Maybe they were always far fetched then also (more than my nostalgic self wants to believe), but without any spoilers Indiana 5 took a new leap in creative archaeology!

With move flights over the pond next week, I’m going to rewatch Ready Player One. Saw it once when it came out and remember it being entertaining.

Was flicking through the TV channels earlier and noticed that a Christmas film was shown. Bloody hell. It's over two months to Christmas and already Christmas films are being shown. It's going to get even worse over the coming weeks.

Bah humbug!

I watched The Great Escaper this afternoon. Has the great Michael Caine and the late great Glenda Jackson in the lead roles. It's about a D-Day veteran who had served with the Royal Navy going to France for the 70th anniversary of D-Day commemorations in 2014. Bernard Jordan who is portrayed by Caine missed out on the official commemorations so made his own way to France which resulted in a search for him. I remember reading about it in the news. It made national TV coverage as well.

The film has some great humour but also some moving and poignant moments. Worth seeing.

I'm going to watch Napoleon on Wednesday. Has received criticism from a number of historians. Later I'll be going to the National Army Museum to listen to a discussion about how Napoleon and that period of history are portrayed in films.

Saw Napoleon earlier. All in all I found the film flat and disappointing. I think that there were bits which were missing and parts of the film which should have been left out. I would have liked to have known more about the politics of the time e.g. the downfall of Robespierre and the European politics of the time, Bonaparte's relationship with Josephine was covered in depth and possibly given too much coverage in the film when other parts of Napoleon's life and career could have been covered more.

As for the battle scenes only Austerlitz and Waterloo were covered in any detail. As for Waterloo the battle scenes in the film of that name from circa 1970 i.e. where Rod Steiger played Napoleon and Christopher Plummer portrayed Wellington were much better.

The film was just over two-and-a-half hours in length; the full version which is four hours is to be broadcast on Apple TV in due course. Will be interesting to see what bits in that version are missing from the cinema one.

A friend of mine has also seen it and she found it disappointing and a wasted opportunity. I agree with her.

Watching Zulu for the umpteenth time. Despite its inaccuracies still a very good war/historical film. Much better than The Imitation Game, The Bridge over the River Kwai, Napoleon and Braveheart.

Was first shown in cinemas in 1964 and I first saw it in the early seventies.

Finally watched Do The Right Thing, the film that brought Spike Lee to everyone's attention. It was well made and well acted, with Danny Aiello very good as the pizza restaurant owner. Spike Lee was also good.

Watched One Life earlier today. A very powerful and moving film about the work of Nicholas Winton and those he worked with in rescuing 669 children - most of whom were Jewish - from Czechoslovakia in 1938 and 1939. An excellent cast and highly recommended. There are some films which leave you moved and shocked about mankind's inhumanity to others. I include One Life in that category alongside Schindler's List and The Magdalen Sisters. Winton and his colleagues were men and women who wanted to do their bit to help others and a reminder to us all of the quote by the 18th Century philosopher Edmund Burke: 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.'

Watching Ice Cold in Alec. A great cast and script. For me, one of the best films set in WW2 and with one of the great endings in film history.

I went to watch Wicked Little Letters this morning. A very good film with a great cast including Olivia Coleman, Jessica Buckley, Timothy Spall and Gemma Jones. Based on a true story and one of the characters Gladys Moss portrayed by Anjana Vasan was the first female police officer in the county of Sussex.

Some fine moments in the film including some good humour I think it's fair to say that the language was colourful. Have heard worse though. Sometimes at Stamford Bridge. Although I can't think why you would hear bad language at the Bridge.

Watching Duel. One of Spielberg's earliest films and made in 1971. Stars Dennis Weaver who plays a salesman who drives a Plymouth Valiant  and is terrorised by a driver in a tanker. The tanker driver takes umbrage when he believes that Weaver cuts him up.

You never see the driver of the tanker and Weaver thinks it could be one of a crowd he meets in a cafe. Some great shocking moments and definitely worth watching. The film is based on a short story by Richard Matheson.

Classic film. Watched it again not so long ago - brilliantly tense and fantastic acting. Totally underrated movie.
