January 14, 201214 yr Ok, I obviously haven't seen this one, but Wes Anderson is one of my favourite directors at the moment, so here we go: Some interesting new faces and some old "regulars" from previous Wes Anderson movies. I'll definitely go see it when it comes out. If "The Dark Knight Rises" wasn't coming out this year, this would be my most anticipated movie of the year. I love Wes Anderson.
January 14, 201214 yr Ok, I obviously haven't seen this one, but Wes Anderson is one of my favourite directors at the moment, so here we go: Ooh, thanks for posting this. I also like Wes Anderson a lot.
January 14, 201214 yr Has anyone seen Drive? I could go to see that next Monday but it's the dubbed version not the VO so I'm a bit dubious about it. But it does sound like a film I'd enjoy.
January 15, 201214 yr Since it's the Golden Globes I've tried to watch some of the nominated movies and tonight I went with two nominated for quite a few awards. First I saw "The Ides of March". Since it was made by George Clooney and had some really good actors in it (Seymour Hoffman, Gosling, Clooney, Tomei, Giamatti) I was really looking forward to it. It turned out to be a good movie, but I thought it would be more complicated and deep. Still, it was good and well worth seeing. The acting was great (of course) and I have to say that I kind of hate George Clooney. He's hot and seems to only be getting hotter the older he gets, he's also a great actor and as it turns out he can also make great movies ("Good Night and Good Luck" was brilliant!). Not only that, he seems to be a great guy as well. How can he be so f*cking perfect!? Anyway, "The Ides of March". Good movie. Don't think it'll win many awards though and I would not be surprised if it went home with nothing at the Golden Globes. It's nominated for "Best Motion Picture - Drama", "Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama", "Best Director" and "Best Screenplay". I haven't seen all nominated movies yet, but the feeling I have is that the Golden Globe for "Best Motion Picture - Drama" might go to "The Descendants", "Hugo" or "The Help". Ryan Gosling should have been nominated for "Drive" instead, but I still think he would have a small chance at winning. The other nominees seems to be really strong this year. Perhaps Gosling can have a chance since he's had a good year, but something tells me Fassbender could snag the award. He's up against some big names though. Perhaps some feel it's time to give Di Caprio the award. As for "Best Screenplay" and "Best Director" it's really hard to say who will win it. "The Artist" could be seen as a favourite, but Scorsese and Woody Allen will be tough to beat. The 2nd movie I saw was one that I have put off seeing for quite some time - "The Help". Dear me how I regret not seeing it sooner. It was great. At almost 2½ hours I thought it would feel very long and perhaps boring, but it didn't. It felt like a 90 minute movie almost. The story is about a young woman in the 1960's Mississippi who decides to interview and write about the black women who takes care of the families. All their stories, and there are lots of them. The movie is interesting, funny, sad and entertaining. The acting is great. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer are absolutely brilliant as two of the women being interviewed. Emma Stone - who plays the woman doing the interviews - are really good as well. Then there's Bryce Dallas Howard, Allison Jenney and Sissy Spacek. All great. And the rest of the cast does a really good job as well. Really well worth seeing and even though it's up against some tough competition at the Golden Globes I think it wont go home empty handed. Has anyone seen Drive? I could go to see that next Monday but it's the dubbed version not the VO so I'm a bit dubious about it. But it does sound like a film I'd enjoy. I've seen it and I really liked it. I was expecting action, fast cars, exciting getaways and so on. But the story is more of a crime drama. There's not much action in it at all. Instead there's some interesting characters, a good and original story, great soundtrack and great acting. Ryan Gosling is brilliant. Talk about a great year for him. I think you should see it.
January 15, 201214 yr Thanks for the write-up, Moos. I highly recommend The Descendants. Have to get off my duff and write it up. It had one false moment near the end, but was otherwise flawless. Intelligent movie.
January 15, 201214 yr I watched The Good Shepherd last night. I thought I might like it because of the subject matter and the cast seemed like a pretty decent one, but it was quite boring. I didn't really care about any of the characters and I was just waiting for it to end after the first hour. I think I almost fell asleep at one point.
January 15, 201214 yr Thanks Moos, in that case I will definitely go to see Drive. I'm not a particular fan of Ryan Gosling, but was impressed by his performance in the Ides of March.
January 15, 201214 yr I got to watch Highlander again the other day, but in HD for the first time. Its aged well, one of my all time favourite films and such a bloody brilliant soundtrack...
January 15, 201214 yr Speaking of Gosling, next up in my Netflix queue is "Blue Valentine" which I heard can be quite depressing. I also have "King of Kong" coming, the documentary about competitive video game arcade players, which I heard is very entertaining.
January 15, 201214 yr Ive just took the free trial with netflix for my xbox, watched an episode of the IT crowd last night and was very impressed by how smooth it went. I was thinking of dropping some Sky channels to accomodate netflix.
January 15, 201214 yr Bought a new LED PC monitor which is Full HD so looking forward to streaming some HD movies on it! Dont know which one to start with though..
January 15, 201214 yr Speaking of Gosling, next up in my Netflix queue is "Blue Valentine" which I heard can be quite depressing. This is a bad, bad movie.
January 15, 201214 yr the one from 1982? Is there another one? Good movie, if you like SF. Amazing production values and imagination for a small budget film. The new-ish Director's Cut has additional video which makes one plot element a lot less ambiguous. Well worth watching.
January 15, 201214 yr Might give it a watch, dont know if theres another one with the name blade runner but it wouldnt surprise me!

And its aged really well also, still such an incredible movie with an iconic sound track. The "Ive seen things" speech still gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up.
January 15, 201214 yr There's only one Bladerunner! Not true, I got a special edition boxset off my wife for xmas a few years ago and theres about 8 different bloody versions. Though the original is still the best in my opinion.

January 15, 201214 yr Yep, according to this theres 7 different versions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versions_of_Blade_Runner Talk about milking it.
January 15, 201214 yr Ah right , it's seven versions of the SAME film - it's not seven different films with the same name! What a swizz! As you say, dickywuh, the poor old cow's teats must have been a bit sore.

Other than that, an OK movie, but for some reason Heath Ledger's old girlfriend (I just had a brain fart and can't remember her first name, though her last name is Williams) just does not do it for me.

You're being generous. It's two hours of whining-disguised-as-indy-movie. It's horrible. Michelle Williams.
