Opening Day 2010/2011

Featured Replies

I know its a few weeks off before next season's fixtures are 5released, but I would like to ask fellow members who do they want on the opening day of next season's (2010/2011) Premiership?

Below are the teams in next season's premiership that we have never played on the opening day of a premier league season:

*) Tottenham Hotspur (1957)

*) Aston Villa (1960)

*) Blackburn Rovers (1988)

*) Wolverhampton Wanderers (1964)

*) Arsenal (1984)

*) West Bromwich Albion (1977)

*) Blackpool (1951) or Cardiff (N/A)

*) Stoke City (1933)

*) Fulham (N/A)

*) Bolton Wanderers (1981)

*) Everton (1978)

The years marked in the brackets represents the last time that Chelsea played the teams above on the opening day of the league campaign. Based on the list above it would not surpise me if the team that we get on the opening day of the season is Fulham. The simple fact that we have never played them on the opening day in our league history.

In terms of what team I want to face? Simple: Fulham at Craven Cottage. Would be an interesting start to the defence of the Premier League title.

Can't wait to kick off next season. Would be nice to start at home.

I doubt that we will start at home next season. The reason being that we have started off at home in our last four seasons (Hull 2-1, Portsmouth 4-0, Birmingham 3-2, and Manchester City 3-0). In fact the last time that we started away was back in 2005, when we started off against then newly promoted Wigan. I will never forget that match, especially Crespo's shot at the end.

Citeh would be interesting especially depending on what we both do in the summer market (bets are they do way more than us!)

I'd also like Blackpool away!

City or Tottenham.

Hope we do the double over both of them next year. Especially Tottenham.

Yep being London rivals Spurs are special for us.

But Citeh has been thorn in flesh for us in this season.....I cant forget that 4-2 bashing we received at hands of Citeh that too at Bridge ::ChELSeAFaN::.

And that Wayne snubbing Terry incidence made it worse...After that I hoped we beat em hands down and Terry will have last laugh ..but that didnt happen..

I wish things turn the otherway now.

I forgot every defeat the moment the 3rd goal went in against Wigan - well every defeat bar the Spurs one.

I'd hate a big team. The league is all about getting a good first game, we've had a win every day on the opening season for years, I'd hate for us to play City, considering our form against them last season.

Indeed. In fact we have won our last eight opening day fixtures in the Premier League. Below are the eight fixtures in full:

2009: Chelsea 2-1 Hull

2008: Chelsea 4-0 Portsmouth

2007: Chelsea 3-2 Birmingham

2006: Chelsea 3-0 Manchester City

2005: Wigan Athletic 0-1 Chelsea

2004: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

2003: Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea

2002: Charlton 2-3 Chelsea

The last time that we dropped points on the opening day was back in 2001, when we drew 1-1 at home to Newcastle United. The last time that we lost 2-1 on the opening day was away to Coventry back in the 1998-1999 season.

2006: Manchester City 3-0. The same this year please! :D

I doubt that we will get Machester City on the opening day of next season. For the record below are the list of results of Chelsea playing on the opening day since the start of the Premier League:

1992: Chelsea 1-1 Oldham Athletic

1993: Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Chelsea

1994: Chelsea 2-0 Norwich City

1995: Everton 0-0 Chelsea

1996: Southampton 0-0 Chelsea

1997: Coventry City 3-2 Chelsea

1998: Coventry City 2-1 Chelsea

1999: Chelsea 4-0 Sunderland

2000: Chelsea 4-2 West Ham United

2001: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle United

2002: Charlton Athletic 2-3 Chelsea

2003: Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea

2004: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

2005: Wigan Athletic 0-1 Chelsea

2006: Chelsea 3-0 Manchester City

2007: Chelsea 3-2 Birmingham

2008: Chelsea 4-0 Portsmouth

2009: Chelsea 2-1 Hull City

Total: P18 W11 D4 L3

Quite a decent record as you can see :D

I forgot every defeat the moment the 3rd goal went in against Wigan - well every defeat bar the Spurs one.

Even I would have forgotten if it were just defeats.

But the controversies around it, provoking statements by Tewez and other Citeh guys made it difficult to digest for me.

And most importantly 4 goals that we suffered in our den ,Slaughter Bridge

Blackpool away (i reckon the would be thousands of us up there for that one). Would have to be a Friday to Sunday one if its a Saturday game.

would be good . Don't think too many teams will fancy a trip to Blackpool in the middle of winter . The pitch looked worse than Wembley so will probably be like the old bridge in the middle of winter.

..............wonder if they all have black balls up there rather orange or yellow ?
