We were the first English side to fly to a domestic match. We flew up to play Newcastle on 19th April 1957.

Glanvill, Rick (2006). Chelsea FC: The Official Biography. p. 96.

We beat Newcastle 2-1 on the 19th. (Good Friday).

Flew back to beat Everton 2-1 at The Bridge the next day.(20th) Easter Saturday.

Then we hammered Newcastle 6-2 at The Bridge on the 22nd, which was Easter Monday.

I guess that ‘GRA’ at the left of the sign means Greyhound Racing Association? I don’t think there are any Dog Tracks left in London now. From memory: Walthamstow, Harringay, White City, Catford, Wimbledon and Romford. Anyone recall any others? Some of the dogs would out sprint our players, although Flash Walker (in his day) might have given them a run for their money.

Gate 13:Yeah you’re right re GRA.

‘During 1933, Stamford Bridge Ltd, a subsidiary of parent company Greyhound Racing Association, (GRA), took over the athletics track belonging to the London Athletics Club and forced them to leave because they wished to construct a greyhound track around the football pitch.’

Culpepper Clarke, Carlo F (1934). Greyhound and Greyhound Racing. Methuen & Co Ltd (London). p. 136.

The speedway team Stamford Bridge Pensioners were also forced to leave.

The first night of Greyhound racing was held at The Bridge on 31 July 1933.

On 1 August 1968, the GRA closed Stamford Bridge to greyhound racing.
