Chelsea's 5th against Hereford - only first 4 are on film

Hi Garry

I have Walker's goal at home to Cardiff and will put on when I get home

The 6-2 v Burnley 1977-78 was filmed by ITN. Unfortunately I only have two of our goals.

I aim to get all 8 eventually

The BBC should have the last goal against Hereford. They just wanted to piss me off by cutting the footage.

Burnley.

We were supposed to play them on Saturday 28th, We stood outside in queues, gates not open. At 2.15 a late inspection and game off. Chelsea - en masse - decide to go to Highbury. Arsenal Wolves in the cup. Chelsea turn up just after kickoff and take the North Bank. Arsenal fans spill over onto the pitch. Wolves think they are taking the end and run accross the pitch to join in and Chelsea batter them as well. The match highlights were televised and you could Chelsea fans all game. The camera crews were ordered not to show Chelsea and they filmed low strange angles behind the goal.

As for the rearranged game on Tuesday 31st - Burnley scored after 17 seconds and we quaked. We thought we would now lose.

Our previous two home games we had scored 4 (Liverpool) and 5 (Ipswich). We completed the sequence by then bunging in 6 past Burnley. With a few minutes to go Burnley scored and the Shed cheer and start singing "Burnley are back alo, alo, Burnley are back alo, alo, Burnley are back alo, alo, Burnley are back alo, alo," On their next attack we cheer them on to score again. They don't. Final whistle and both teams clapped off the pitch.

I have this game and can post if you want to see it again.

It does not show the pitch invasion after the game though.

The only invasion is of a streaker and when we scored, a few got on the pitch

Yeah thatd be good mate cheers, i only just got in that day & had to go round to the ellersie rd turnstyles & had to stand on a small gate while balancing, i held on to small metal bar going across the top.

The cold winter of 78-79 resulted in a lot of postponed games. However in those days you were allowed to rearrange it with a few days. The police stopped this after the famous three team ruck at Luton involving Chelsea, Millwall and West Ham in 85. So many games were cleared up.

You were also allowed to play games after the cup final. The rule on fairness that the entire league had to finish on the same day was brought in after Coventry had three games left at the end of the 1985 season.

If they won them all Norwich would be relegated. But they had only won 12 in 39 and 2 of the last 9. The bookies had it at 50-1. Coventry of course still had something to play for. However they had to play Everton who had won the league and were 13 points clear. Their results

Stoke City - away W 1-0

Luton Town - home W 1-0

Everton - home - W 4-1

Ever since then the league has to finish on the same day, and has? ever since. (I am unaware of any exceptions but it could happen I guess).

The FA only acted because it became high profile. The rule should have been bought in when

a) West Ham had to go and win at Roker Park 2 days after the 1980 cup final. They spent two days drinking and didn't try to score. (I was there).

b) Coventry and Bristol City played out a 2-2 draw in 76-77 after the season had finished for other teams. The last 25 minutes was a parody with the two teams passing the ball around. The draw kept both teams up and relegated Sunderland.

As for that bad winter....

Entire fixture list for Saturday 6th January 1979

Planned

32 cup games and 8 games in the lower divisions

English FA Cup Third Round

Birmingham City 0-2 Burnley

Leicester City 3-0 Norwich City

Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Arsenal

Shrewsbury Town 3-1 Cambridge United

English Division Three

Walsall 1-2 Hull City

Watford 2-0 Lincoln City

Entire fixture list for Saturday 13th January 1979

Planned 46 games

English Division One

Arsenal 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Bristol City 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Leeds United 1-1 Manchester City

Norwich City 1-1 West Bromwich Albion

English Division Two

Cambridge United 5-0 Cardiff City

English Division Three

Exeter City 3-1 Chesterfield

Gillingham 3-2 Tranmere Rovers

Peterborough United 2-1 Chester City

English Division Four

Aldershot 1-1 Port Vale

Bournemouth 0-1 Crewe Alexandra

Newport County 3-2 Reading

Portsmouth 1-1 Rochdale

Finally, the reason you normally played cup final teams after the season was because the cup rounds could go to 3 or 4 replays so teams involved in the FA Cup usually had games left after the season. No point in arranging the week before cup final (injury risks) so these games were played after.

That Cardiff game is the one in 79/80 i presume? Walker came on as sub & got a late winner?

I remember that game i was up in the west in door Z with a family friend, i used to have(years & years ago) a paper cutting think it was from the sunday Mirror, showing one lone Cardiff skinhead trudging along an empty north terrace, insinuating he was the only Cardiff fan there, i'd love to see that cutting again.

I'm so glad you've posted this Garry, i used to work with a fella years ago who told me a similer story, over the years i've repeated his story on various forums & only one fella has ever replied & knew all about it & he was an older Wolves lad.

The story i heard was my old work mate & his mates got to Victoria & saw signs saying Chelsea game pp, so they went off to watch Arsenal v Wolves, en route they met a big mob of other Chelsea & tagged along with them, they went in the north bank & it went off, after a short while they were escorted along the touchline which was seen on match of the day, they then got put in the Wolves end & got a heroes welcome from Wolves, once in Chelsea then kicked it off again but this time with Wolves, i've searched for that Arsenal v Wolves footage for years but never found it anywhere?

Could have been a North Stand skin looking for the away fans maybe?

Maybe mate but from memory he was walking towards the west(exits i suppose) hands in pockets looking down, think the report said something like " a lone Cardiff fan trudges away after a late goal by Clive Walker see Chelsea grab win" or something like that(i think lol)

Right question for you older lads, do any of you ever remember some Verona fans coming to stamford bridge in 1977?

I used to have a pic on my pc of them putting up a flag on the shed fence/wall but lost it, now i'm not sure who we played that day but there was definitly some Verona fans present & they were welcomed with open arms by Chelsea, it even gets a mention on wikipedia ect(google it & you'll see it mentioned)

Kingy do you remember the pic from our old board?

About 11/12 years ago me & the mrs went to Rimini, i met a few Verona skins young & old in an English bar & we got we'll looked after by them as they were also Chelsea, we ended up watching them play at some music festival in a park with them giving us a mention before their set with a spot light on us much to my mrs embarressment, in broken english "a big welcome to our friends from Chelsea", i'd never really heard of them until then & then finding that pic a few years later.

Have you read the Tim Parks book, A season with Verona, he spends a season travelling around Italy with their fans, well worth a look.

> Verona skins young & old in an English bar

I bet I know the pub you mean in Rimini. It would be the Rose and Crown, with Ian, the Charlton barman who has worked there for 30 years. I live in Rimini two-three months a year looking after cyclists. (I work as a Cycling guide out of a Rimimi hotel).

The pub was tear-gased during World Cup 90.

Here.

Note that Colin Moynihan the (4th Baron Moynihan PC) was Sports Minister at the time and he had chartered a plane for 246 people three days before the trouble in Rimini. The Italian police nicked 246 people, how fitting! Moynihan was full of hatred for football and the working classes. He was a PR disaster.

Due to PC problems having trouble playing catch up:-

Posponed games QPR away around 1973, massed ranks of Chelsea waiting for the loft gates to be opened only to be told game was cancelled:-

Burnley Game, got to Victoria and masses of Chelsea heading to Highbury cos our game was posponed. Chelsea in North Bank for the whole game also Wolves got steamed into on the clock end.

FA cup replay at Highbury around 1972 ish lost and Arse got a penalty that never was, the crush going home at Arsenal Tube was so bad that I got swept into the tube staion and down the escalator sometimes my feet were not even on the ground, It really was by the grace of God that a mass disaster never happened, my programmed disintergrated in my inside pocket due to the crushing and heat.

Other thngs happening early 1970s were afternoon kick offs due to the 3 day week.

Bolton away, Chelsea mob in the Bolton End after it kicked off Chelsea ran from the away fans end across the pitch for a mass take of the Bolton end the Bolton fans ran the other way into the away end and still got a pasting from a mob under a giant union jack.

Garry - never knew about that planned Sudan trip that led to the Rotherham debacle. I seem to remember we played Soton in the League Cup in midweek afew days before. Fantastic atmosphere in the Shed and a brilliant win by us in extra time. And then 3 or 4 a days later a complete hammering at a mickey mouse team. I'd always put it down to 'typical Chelsea' - beat or match the best then fail to turn up against the crap teams. I remember Bates in the programme having a go at the players after that thrashing, but exempting Fillery (my favourite player of those dark days in Div2). I had no clue that the jabs had left our team in such a state.

Yeah thatd be good mate cheers, i only just got in that day & had to go round to the ellersie rd turnstyles & had to stand on a small gate while balancing, i held on to small metal bar going across the top.

Two games i would like to see but dont know if they were ever on tv are the man city cup winners cup semi finals in 71.

Hi cfc kingy

That's an intersting one, I don't think either games were filmed, as I don't know anyone who has or even seen it. ITV do not have coverage for sure, but I didn't ask the BBC. A mate of mine said the BBC showed The Liverpool v Leeds game in the Fairs Cup that season instead

Derek Smethurst who scored in the first leg contacted me and enquired as he has never seen it either..........................SO can anyone let me know for definate if they have seen either game as I would have been too young to remember??
