One headline was ' Thugs ruin Chelsea's big day " Nothing of the sort.Back when turnstile operators could keep the pedal down and let extra in for cash in the pocket. One of the issues was at the Grimsby game a week later. All ticket game, behind the goal was £2.60. I know people that paid a tenner and got in. Money talks and some people won’t turn it down. Also when you’ve got some one at the turnstile with a huge queue behind all squashed together it’s easier to let them in.

Up here in Scotland, youngsters, under the aged of 11 or 12 were ‘lifted over the turnstile gate’ and got in free or for a cash sum given by their dad to the turnstile operator. The true attendances were often simply guessed at or Seated areas were seemingly at times ‘forgotten’ allegedly and so not counted!
May 6May 6 Eddie in action v Sheff Wed. Early 1985.Clive Walker chipping the Oldham keeper. He scored twice as we won 3-0.3rd May 1980. 28,253 was given as the official attendance! It looks packed to me…3rd May 1980.

" room for a little 'un" was the code for the turnstile guy to let both in !
