Chelsea have had a £33m offer for Javier Pastore rejected, the Palermo president has claimed.

The 21-year-old winger is one of the most coveted players in Europe with Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all understood to be keen on doing a deal for him this summer.

But, speaking on Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, the club's president Maurizio Zamparini has revealed that the west London club have firmed up their interest with an offer - which was some way short of their asking price.

Zamparini said: "Chelsea was a club that we had a major offer from.

"But it did not reach the minimum figure that we set for a player of his quality.

"If someone wants to buy Pastore, the price is 50m (£44m).

"There are five or six clubs also interested, including Man City and big clubs from Spain and Italy but so far there has been nothing from them."

If its true the good news is we're looking for that type of player. Obviously that price is ridiculous but the management seem to be on the right track.

I think that this bid proves that people who say they are in the know aren't, and our management are pretty secretive, because I personally haven't seen this transfer/bid said anywhere. Seems people just talking out there ass

We are the ones to blame for this. Real Madrid actually. Once they paid 90 million for Ronaldo, the price tags in the transfer market have gone berserk!

Since then, we've seen some unrealistic valuations for the likes of Torres, Caroll, etc.

We did pay high prices in 2004 but nothing like what Real and City have done.

I have checked with my colleague, Zamparini did not talk to radio station Cadena Ser...Chelsea did not bid for Pastore..

Marco Silva.

This seems a little dodgy to me, sounds like a president drumming up a bit of interest and getting the opportunity to name his price.

However, giving Palermo the benefit of the doubt and assuming we did bid I'm going to repeat what I said this yesterday in the random rumours thread.

Why do we insist on paying ridiculously over the odds for players who are nowhere near as good as their price tag suggests. Pastore is good but he is really inconsistent. 12 goals and 6 assists for the season is worth 50m euros? Ilicic who plays the same position right next to him has 8 goals and 8 assists It's no wonder Palermo are happy to cash in, they'd lose nothing from their team and gain 50m euros to reinvest in the team.

The are at least 5 players who would be just as good as Pastore for half the price if that. Why can't we just for once be linked with someone sensible?

I think this is all crap .

These days , I believe even if we call them saying that we are from chelsea fc and we are interested in your player , that club will leak that to the press to inflate the player's price . And our club has become some sort of a common name to be linked for these tier 2 clubs trying to sell their player at a premium !

Really? I personally don't see that we've been ripped off price wise for anyone recently except Torres and Zhirkov. This was true in the early days of Roman's ownership, clubs just set a different price when we came calling. Arsenal would have gotten Paulo Ferriera for 5 million, we had to shell out close to 20. Tiago also was overpriced, we got him for some 12-13 million, SWP for 24 and Del Horno for 10 million. Its similar to whats happening at City right now, Dzeko, Jo, Bellamy, Lescott and Santa Cruz have been signed for prices way over what they're worth.

Although I have to say Zamparini has done this for some time now, every other week he comes out saying this team or that team have submitted a bid for Pastore.

Probably because the fat lazy drunken sports hacks that work for the British newspapers aren't knowledgeable enough about football to be able to come up with any names beyond the obvious.

I'd love to be a football reporter for a red top. You just have one 'story' written in which you have a few blanks to fill in. Then in a 2 hats you have some names, one for players and one for clubs. So out pops Chelsea and Pastore. Then at the end tag on that City, Real, Utd and Spurs are also interested. Bingo. Then wait a few weeks and hope that one of your randomly generated stories actually happens and claim you got an exclusive. Bingo - sports journalist of the year! Now, where's that bottle of scotch....

I know nothing about this player

His girlfriend's name is Chiara.

Zamparini at it again....

"How could anyone turn down €50m cash for Pastore? I never saw such an offer," he said, according to Il Giornale. "Do you think if they put that money on the table, that I would throw it away?

"I don’t know if Chelsea ever made this offer. It might’ve been to his agent, but it never reached me. If it did arrive, then I would think about it carefully."

He really is trying to start a bidding war isnt he.

Looks like he was bought for 17 MP .

We must be very clear to tell other clubs we won't buy prodigies for such a high amount !

Erm, what?

From Wiki:

On 11 July 2009 Palermo formally announced the signing of Pastore for five years until 30 June 2014, with the transfer fee being about $8 million

Now that figure is way more believable. Does the president think he can change facts?

This story won't go away....

Argentina star Javier Pastore's agent believes Palermo will achieve the €50million (£43.9m) asking price they want for his services.

The 21-year-old playmaker is being tracked by some of Europe's biggest names, including the likes of Barcelona, Real Madridand Chelsea.

President Maurizio Zamparini stated earlier this week the young superstar would only be leaving the Serie A club if his valuation of the player was met.

Although the £43.9m price tag is likely to deter some suitors, Pastore's agent Marcelo Simonian believes the club's reserve price will be met by at least one team.

"Zamparini has said at which price he would be willing to sell Pastore and I believe without a doubt, that he will be sold on those figures," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

I think we're looking at a few players for the creative midfield role at the same time. Pastore, Modric, Sneijder to name but three who have been strongly linked with us. This is in a way good position to be in while negotiating with clubs. We cant be held for ransom by any one club, especially if the player also wants out, because they know we always have other options. In the past we've put ourselves in a corner by going all out for one player and have paid over the odds but we're playing it well in the past couple of years.

If Modric wants to go to a CL club, which he has said openly, Spurs can only go up so much in their valuation of the player because they'd know there are Pastore/Sneijder who will cost lesser or be a better value for the money they are asking respectively so will have to give in or risk losing on a big transfer fee with an unhappy player in the squad.

Can you just imagine Modric and Sneijder for example, in our midfield? So glad we're looking at this sort of player finally.
