Man City away when we were banned

Featured Replies

As a rather wet behind the ears teen, I phoned up the Man City ticket office while our away ban was in force. I told the guy on the other end of the phone in my nicest telephone voice that I was a Chelsea fan and not a hooligan and that I really wanted to see the game. He totally surprised me by agreeing to send me a ticket if I put a check in the post. Even more surprising, was that he must have sent the ticket out immediately as a day or so later it dropped through my letter box.

Anyway for those of us old enough to remember , we got hammered 6-2 and there could not have been more then a few dozen Chelsea fans doted around the ground to celebrate when we pulled the game back to 2 all.

To say it was a miserable end to the day was an understatement, made worse by the fact that I had to wait up there until my overnight national Express coach departed at 11pm. I ended up going to the cinema to watch the war movie A Bridge to Far which was showing at the time.

I have to say that I have always had a little soft spot for City because of that one act of kindness shown to me by the club when I was just a young lad

. It's funny but now years later this fond memory came flooding back to me as City scored that late late winner against QPR on the last day of the season to win the title and of course deny their rivals another title win of there own. And so there was just a little more joy in that for me.

I would be interested to know if any other of you guys on this forum made it to that game as it must have been one of our worse away followings ever

Didn't go, was going to go the season after but British Rail cancelled the special and instead I went over the Bridge to get a refund on my ticket. That was the last game I missed for 5 years. (We won 3-2 and Osgood scored his last goal for us.)

Worst turn out than that was Hull away 82, FA CUP, banned, rail strike, snowstorm, 72 hour notice of game on a Thursday night. Probably about 130-200 of us up there. I have written this up in the videos and photos section as I actually supplied tickets for most of our lads that night....

Wolves away when we were banned was fantastic...More chelsea fans there than would normally be expected..Lots of shirts saying..@UCK THE BAN...IM A CHESEA FAN....Blues in every end

Only went away to Wolves once Just before Christmas the season after we went up. We won 3-1 and I remember a side gate being kicked in and loads of Chelsea fans pouring in except the very last one who got smacked by a copper. There was a lot of us that day

Wolves away when we were banned was great, We had a one side of the pub outside there end and a conga along the top of the bar out of the door and back again, I was even on the door at one stage.

Brimmy, Mike, 78 all related Lol, all shopped at Bearmans?

I went to Maine Road a few times in the 70's, early 80's, but don't remember whether I went to the game when we were banned. I was going to just about every game home and away at the time, so I was probably there. My memory is getting worse and worse, not sure if it's down to the amount of the booze I consumed at games back then, or if I'm on the way to senile dementia - possibly a mix of the two!

When the away ban ended in 1977 clubs had the option of not giving Chelsea tickets if they didnt want to so Man City choose not to.

except for me on course lol

I wrote up to Manchester City to get tickets and they sent me tickets for the Main Stand, went up with Stephen Owen and Terry Last from the East End went by the original Supporters club who had a their usual cheap train tickets which was normally one carriage on a regular BR train. When we came out the station we where met by a Man.City mob near a place called Great Lever Street but with us from the train was a bloke called 'beefy' which made the 20 or so City fans back off and allowed us mingle in the shopping crowd and we all went into a shop where we lost the City fans not one punch thrown! Oh the match 2-6 with the best own goal by Graham Wilkins I have ever seen live. On the way home met a couple of girls who showed us back to Piccadilly station one moved to London and we ended up getting married!

The first time (of 3) i went to man city was in the early 70s...2 of us went into the kippax with girls we had purloined outside only for it to have been a setup...Running onto the pitch was the only way to get out alive...In the 80s chelsea had so many up there in that corner section it was just too good...(around 1982)...The last time was when we played first match away to them coupla seasons back when we lost 1 0...For an early kickoff i was well impressed with that chelsea turnout...I was also lucky enough to be seated in the row before security and them..

Whenever me and my mates went to Maine Rd during the early and mid 80’s (I think it was), there was some old doris ringing a sodding bell all through the game, it drove me crazy!! Anybody else remember her?

That’s my abiding memory of Maine Rd along with on one occasion running a mock with 40 or so other Blues through the streets of Manchester scattering City fans like sheep.

Wolves away 1977 banned game, got the paper clipping from the other wolves game that chelsea78 said about, think that was sh lot that left 5 mins early and turned up at the wolves end with the latter spilling onto the pitch. wolves77.jpg

First Man City game I went to was Full Members Cup final (new old school here). Don't worry, we spanked them and had a nice little collection in their end too. Plod escorted them across the pitch back for entry into our end.

I remember going to Man city when banned on one of Hickys coaches and as we line up at the turnstiles to go up the kip axe but the old bill Sussed us all and put us all back on the coach and escorted us to the mother way so that was a f.......g waste of time, but still they were great days and though I am not one of Hickeys mob( I am Babs mate) I give him his due for laying on coaches to follow the blues.

Too young for the banned city game but I went to the banned Luton game, late 80's early 90's? I remember queuing up to get a burger and all I could hear was "We love you Chelsea, we do"! Even the Luton fans in front of me were laughing, must of been the worst effort of a ban ever! Just gutted we lost 2-0 would of loved to of seen how many Chelsea we're there, I'm sure we were in 3 of the stands that day.

The late 80s and early 90s we were not banned. 3 of us tried hitching it to Man City when we were banned, we got as far as Luton and gave it up. It was freezing cold as well. I think we lost 6-2.

if that's a reference to my quote, Luton banned all away support after the Millwall game that's why I said we were banned but hundreds if not thousands got in that day at Luton.
