On a similar note, is the manager Gary Johnson the same chap who looked promising for us in the late 70s/early 80s? He sounds as if he could come from Stockwell like the GJ who played for us.

I've wondered this myself but I'm pretty certain he isn't. Wikipedia says the manager was born in 1955, but the striker we had who broke into to the side in around 79/80 was definitely younger than that - around 18-19, I'd guess, so born around 1960.

Oh, and Wikipedia says the manager was an apprentice at Watford but left to play in Sweden, so they can't be the same person!

I bought a book the other week all about what ex-Chelsea players are up to now. haven't read it yet so I'll report back on Gary Locke and 'our' Gary Johnson (if he features at all!).

EDIT: Just found this site:

http://www.where-are....co.uk/chelsea/

but no mention of GJ. That site advertises the book I downloaded the other week (only £1.99!)

The "L" page has Tommy Langley working as a presenter on Chelsea TV, a position from which he was removed back in December 2011, reputedly on the instructions of Andre Villas-Boas.

Villas-Boas may have gone, but Tommy Langley has not returned. I would therefore urge Chelsea supporters everywhere to sign the following petition:

Reinstate Tommy Langley

Gary Locke lives in Napier New Zealand now... My home city!!! He played many games for the Napier City Rovers' best ever team, from around the mid 80's through to the 90's when he stopped first team football. I remember watching him at Park Island (the home ground) many a time when I was a lad, he had an amazing ability to pick a pass...

I then went on to join Napier City Rovers myself, when I was 14, and Gary was heavily involved with us youngsters!

I am lucky enough to say that I played 2 seasons with Gary Locke in 2000 and 2001, when he captained the 3rd team (Youth Development). I never followed through with football after I discovered girls and beer... But as a lifelong Chelsea fan... This was and is still, a HUGE honour and claim to a little bit of fame for me!!!

Anyway, that was years ago... but i know he still lives in Napier... His daughter Katrina was about my age, too...

Gary Locke... Humble as anything also... never had any ego, even though he was probably one of the greatest players to grace the old National League in the history of it's existence.... 40 yard diagonal passes with the outside of both feet in his sleep!!!

Thank you for that, Babayaro. I remember watching Gary Locke play at the Bridge... wow that takes me back.

By sheer coincidence a chance remark from a friend got me wondering what had happened to the team I watched as a teenager. We all know where Butch is and what Clive Walker does, but what about the likes of Micky Droy, Micky Nutton, Trevor Aylott, John Dempsey, Bill Garner, Garry Stanley et al?

I found some of the answers. Micky Droy runs an electrical wholesalers in Westminster, Trevor Aylott drives a black cab (as does John Sitton), Bill Garner's a sports teacher, John Dempsey became a care worker and Garry Stanley was last known to be a rep for a pharmaceutical company.

Sometimes I wonder if our current stars realise just how lucky they are.

I met Garry Stanley 3 or 4 years back when he was guest of honour at the MK Chelsea end of season ball, really nice chap. Last time I saw Trevor Aylott he was playing for Bromley, along with Johnny B, for Bromley at Carshalton Athletic one night, although this was about 15 years ago, he was at least as good as he was in his Chelsea days......................farking hopeless.

I saw Micky Droy playing for Kingstonian at Dulwich Hamlet years ago, a New Years Day game in the old ground and from memory he was captain and scored.

I just had a look at that site Backbiter mentioned, found out a few things...

Joe Kirkup owned a sports shop, then opened his own newsagents before retiring to the south of France.

Jim McCalliog became a journalist, then a publican.

John Dempsey works at a special school for handicapped children.

Chris Garland was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1998.

Mike Brolly became a science teacher.

Steve Finnieston became a postman, and later a sales rep with Travis Perkins - apparently he's now self-employed.

Eamonn Bannon bought a guesthouse in Edinburgh in 1997 and is still there.

Brian Bason managed a hotel in Truro.

Steve Francis is now believed to be a postman.

Craig Burley ran his own restaurant that went bust. Since then he's become a football pundit, and major c*nt of the highest order.

Clive Wilson was a sales rep, and later worked at a school after achieving a sports science degree.

Andy Townsend became a pundit and a first class tosser.

Strange how many of them go on to be Postmen. Peter Bonetti was the mailman on the south end of Mull (Island I am from in Scotland) for a few years.

I used to like Lockey......A good pace....Could put in tough tackles.....Good crosser of a ball....I just remember him getting on with the job in hand...

I used to love watching Steve Finnieston play, natural goalscorer and an intelligent footballer. Mind you that promotion side was pretty good all the way through Wilkins, Lewington, Stanley, Swain, young Harris and Bonetti. Pity the doesn't seem to trust in our young players like we were forced to back then.

Dont see Mcecheran making it at very top level.Could be championship standard. Bertrand could stay a squad player for us, but not a first team regular. Liked the little i saw of Ake in the boro match. Just my opinion and hope im wrong.
