The need for a 'poacher'

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anybody else has thought about this or noticed this, but whilst watching Liverpool we didn't take the chances that we had at all and it effectively cost us the game.

RDM said it himself afterwards, "We are still playing well, still creating chances, we just need to be more clinical"

If you look at some of the top clubs in recent years they have all had a 'poacher' type player, who is literally just on the pitch to contribute vital goals and we don't seem to have that at the moment.

For example:

MCI: Aguero, Dzeko

MU: RVP, Rooney, Hernandez (In particular)

Arsenal: RVP

Tottenham: Defoe

Liverpool: Suarez

We have had players who have scored vital goals this season but it's not the same players scoring, and although that isn't a bad thing, it's not a great thing either. Liverpool today and the 5-3 loss to Arsenal last season are two perfect examples of this type of player changing a game. This isn't a Torres or Falcao thread but I really think that the last few games have shown how badly Chelsea need to sign a player like this, even more so now that Drogba has gone.

Thoughts?

Who do we sign though?

Suarez is the furthest thing from a poacher that there is. He's carrying their offense, sure, but it's not because he's clinical. Rooney and Agüero don't really fit the description either.

I do agree that a clinical goal scorer would be a tremendous boost to our team and there's an easy and obvious solution out there. He's named after a bird.

I think the player that would fit the bill perfectly is Falcao. To be honest unless we sign him in January I think we can kiss goodbye to our title hopes if the whole team doesn't start being more clinical with chances. We had a lot of decent chances and Liverpool had about 3.

Falcao is a pipe dream.

Why would they sell when he is taking them to the top pile in Spain and could bag then 20 odd million if the get a top 4 finish?

It's just nit going to happen.

True, but there are other options. There has been talk recently of David Villa leaving Barcelona after a heated argument with Messi, so if that's true then why not? He's a fantastic player as well.

Yeh but is he not 31 now?

The thing is there is a real lack of class strikers who could be available to us in January.

Hopefully we won't panic like we did when we signed Torres and pay massively over the odds for someone who won't work out.

It's what we do.

Annual Chelsea blooper.

Today was the 'wake up call' we needed.

I was waiting from the first minute for Torres to be withdrawn and the Liverpool contingent to have another laugh on his behalf.

Without a top class striker we will fail to beat the better sides - without Drogba we have NOTHING defenders can worry about.

They handled Oscar, Hazard and Mata better than most this season. These three are going to be our future and already frighten the life out of opposing managers but will be approaching 'burn out' by Christmas because without them we cannot challenge for anything unless we buy that top class striker to ease the pressure on them.

Mikel played very well again and Ramires alongside is looking the part.

We need 'that Shaktar' player ! Plus Falcao and then we will be talking 'scary'

Moses and Marin ( What has happened to him ? He is fit ) can mix it up - and Lampard maybe can show his experience as an impact sub or in the way Fergie handles Giggs.

I don't think Sturridge is the answer and as I said last week Torres is not the player we thought he was and is possibly a bigger waste of money than Shevchenko.

Benzema on loan anyone ?

Mourinho would never sell or let alone loan him out. About ten times the player of Torres though but not realistic. I would take a punt on Lewandowski. Big, strong and knows how to finish. Only just 24 aswell so age is on his side.

ll the names coming up are cup tied for the UCL. Falcao and Cavani both aren't but are going to cost a bomb. I mentioned Jelavic from Everton, league experience and proven goal scorer, better than 1 in 2 for everton.

Jelavic is not good enough and say that as someone who wtched him every week for 16 months.

Can't say I have watched him, just a name that came up. 16 goals in 23(4) games isn't a bad return at all though.

Agreed. If we're going to cast aside Torres, we can't go for a budget minded option like Jelavic. That's not an upgrade.

How about rather than casting aside we bring in an option who is different too him and can play alongside him?

Meaning, for example, some games Torres can have a break, others when we are chasing a result we can take off a Mikel or Ramires, or one of the attacking 3 and go 4-1-3-2 or 4-2-2-2?

Demba Ba? He's got a low by out clause and he's clinical. He'll love the service

Be a definite yes if it weren't for those knees. Seem a ticking time bomb.

When United signed Van Persie, with Rooney and Wellbeck there - I suggested we should take a punt on Hernandez - not a bad shout now !
