Eva Carneiro

Featured Replies

Unsure if there is already a topic on this? But as you've read in the media our doctor Eva has had some difficulties in relation to sexist abuse by Arsenal and Manchester United fans lately.

There is a professional footballer who made some calls within Chelsea and wrote a column on it. Pretty spot on to be fair. The link is this: http://www.thesecretfootballer.com/articles/the-secret-footballer/24386/judge-eva-carneiro-on-her-medical-expertise-not-her-gender/.

Don't know who the author is because he is 'Secret' .. but some top top insight.

My view is that it's terrible but football is a bloke's game and you're going to always get stuff like this. I think we're perhaps looking to sanitise football a little bit too much these days, yet there are plenty of chants that you hear far worse than sexist chants.

To be honest this is just an extension of the recent racism, antisemitism etc debate.

Lots of lads in groups do and say stupid things. Some things more stupid than others.

It's mob culture, lad culture and sadly part of football.

We can take steps to punish those caught doing it but I doubt you could ever eradicate it.

The sexism, sexist remarks, still exist in pockets of society and the workplace, so football, unfortunately at this time, is no different. Men are judged and commented on regarding their appearance, but for women I think this is magnified.

Is it that an attractive, intelligent woman like Eva is some kind of threat. If she was unattractive that would also, no doubt, be a source for comment. It's also important to remember that men, mostly young men, are subjected to sexual harassment, but it often goes unreported.

Some of the comments directed towards her are just crass (one in particular mentioned in the article is oddly specific and the guy wants a slap for it) but it's a male-dominated sport and she knew that when she came into it. If you're an attractive woman running onto a field in front of 70,000-odd men then you're going to be objectified to varying degrees and whilst some of that will be negative, she will almost certainly benefit from it professionally.

That's not to excuse some of the more disgusting comments and those guys need dealing with, but I think people have to be realistic about how women are viewed in a league where some clubs have female cheerleaders and EVERY club markets itself and it's wares on sexuality.

In a sport where the man in charge of overseeing the entire sport is suggesting the woman players wear sexier kits are we really surprised at sexist comments being directed to a female club doctor?

Doesn't make it right but it's naive to think you can change that mindset.

The bit about Torres in that article made me smile:

But when they’d finished talking, I asked my friend what he’d said to make her gesticulate like that. He replied: “Oh, I asked who she was waiting for and she said that she needed to check on Fernando Torres but that he’s always moaning about something or other and that there was probably nothing wrong with him. He just likes the attention.”

Anyway... we've made great progress towards eradicating the widespread racist abuse that used to be directed towards black players so I don't see why it's not possible to tackle the disgusting sexist abuse that is directed at the likes of Eva.

I think Blatter made that, one of his many, gaffe ten years ago? I don't know if he still believes it, or just keeps schtum if he does. He has a wide range of unacceptable ideas as we all know. Times are changing and the 2010 equality act shows Blatter is out dated.

Eva and any other woman should not have to think about being objectified just because her gender is under represented in a man's world', or work place or sport; that's like going back to the time when girls were told to be secretaries because they couldn't possibly be an engineer!

We actually do sell a women's Chelsea shirt in the megastore - it's lower-cut at the neck and a tighter fit around the bosom. Yet the women's team wear the regular shirt.

This isn't a football problem but a societal reality. Do people take it too far? Absolutely but you're not going to change the run-of-the-mill stuff.

yeah, good article but the bit about Torres was the most revealing and at the same time, least surprising, thing in it

Not sure what people expect. Eva is a very attractive and fit looking lass. Running onto a football pitch, looking like she does, in a largely male environment (many of whom will have been on the beers) are we honestly expecting no reaction?!!!

I wouldn't expect chants like this:

“Have you ever had a Gooner up your arse?”

“Show us where you piss from, you slag, show us your minge”

I can't help but question the mentality of anybody who thinks that's a normal/acceptable reaction to seeing an attractive women. We're not talking about the odd wolf-whistle here.

We're not blind, but most of us temper our visual appreciation of her alongside her intelligence. I think, again, the issue is dealing with a minority who still think it's the seventies. I have a girl and would rather her experience that most men are respectful.

Can't agree on that one, anyone should have the right to do their job free or discrimination based on their gender, race, sexuality, etc.

Having 20,000 drunken blokes leering at you would be extremely intimidating, I think a lot of us don't appreciate the intimidation factor involved in what some people would refer to as harmless banter.

Me neither, but we all know what blokes are like in front of their pals when they are tanked up.

The "get your t*ts out for the lads & doyou take it up the ****" were common place and probably still are but some folk have to go further and cross the line. If she wasn't employed by Chelsea and she was on the staff of one of our opponents, I would fully expect Chelsea fans to come up with something but hopefully humourous and not so crude.

Maybe in an ideal world - but we all know that doesn't exist.

Not saying it's right but it is very naive if people are genuinely shocked by this. As a professional, I have no doubt that she expects the sort of reaction from opposition fans and is more than prepared for it.

Anyone remember the male streaker when Chelsea fans chanted, ' Is that all she gets at home? Is that all she gets at home?'

I can cope with that.

When an associate of ours was leering at, and commenting about, some young girls while we were on a night out, he was told in no uncertain terms, but at the time most of the group had teenage kid including daughters, or daughters who were young women. I would hate to think my nephews treated women with such disrespect and they know it.

Oh it's definitely not surprising, but in the same way racial abuse wasn't surprising a few decades ago at some point it needs to be cut out.

If the internet existed in the early eighties I'm sure there would have been football forums with people using similar arguments to play down and excuse the monkey chanting and banana throwing that happened in those days.

People are saying that this really nasty sexist stuff is just a symptom of lad/drinking/football culture or whatever. Maybe that's true, I don't know. I honestly don't know behaves like that after a few beers so I'll have to take their word for it. Culture is not fixed though, attitudes change. If it really is a part of modern 'lad' culture then I don't think that mean everyone should just grin and bear it and accept that nothing can be done about it.

Things do change, after 128 years the Royal St George's golf club has decided to accept women! How they got away with that for so long is boggling.

Let's not conflate racism and sexism. In the world of football they're very different, mostly because football is a very male-dominated arena.

Some of the abuse she got was just ridiculous but in crowds you'll always get blokes trying to get a laugh by saying stuff like that. Occasionally it's funny, in this case it wasn't - racism never is though.
