Has the Champions League ruined domestic football?

Featured Replies

Where does he say you aren't a real supporter?

Because apparently I don't 'follow the club out of passion and a connection'. Do you agree with that? When I was sat in the East Lower whilst it was chucking down hailstones as we lost at home to Southampton in the mid-90s, do you think trophies were on my mind?

What gives someone like you or ShedPensioner to decide what camps supporters are split into? What exactly is your guys insight into our support?

If people want to question my support of this club then why can't I do the same back?

ShedPensioner did, and you liked the post. If you don't like people questioning other people's support then don't 'like' it when they do. As for you, I'm sure you love this club a lot. Me too. That's why I, and thousands like me, go to support our club.

Typo - 1994.

Honestly though, if you don't like me then put me on ignore. I'll do the same because if I wanted the opinion of a middle-aged car salesman then I'd go to my nearest Wetherspoons at 10am.

But don't question my support of this club over the internet. Be brave.

One day we'll have that meet up for a pint you keep banging on about and we'll see just how brave you really are you c**t!

So it's out in the open, not hidden away in a PM, I'm in South London this weekend, I'll be free to meet up either later tomorrow or Saturday between 1:00 and 3:00pm.

If you want to meet to discuss our differences I'll be happy to oblige.

Busy.

And there Ladies and Gentlemen is all the proof you need!!

What we have here is a bonafide 100% internet warrier, only comfortable behind his keyboard!

The offers of meeting for a pint are only a token gesture as the man (I use the term lightly) is actually a coward!

Or you have someone who owes his family a weekend after spending last weekend at the football. I'm quite happy to discuss our differences at another convenient time.

Tbh I didn't even see that little bit about you at the bottom when I liked it but it still doesn't say you aren't a real or proper supporter does it? You seem to be very over sensitive about it. Maybe touched a nerve somehow?

I am not one to say you aren't a real fan because you don't attend games like you do. Seems you're the judgemental one here. It's like people who call fans glory supporters for supporting a team when they've won something. It's just an in for those fans and everyone has as much right to support a club as anyone else.

I will admit I don't like what you said about resting players for the league cup final. I don't like that sort of attitude and for someone such as yourself I thought you would have lived for those cup finals. You devalued it and it didn't deserve to be devalued at all.

Well when you care about something and invest a lot of time and money in following it, to be called something less than a proper supporter by someone like ShedPensioner is a little irksome.

But if you didn't see it then that's fine.

As you are well aware, I don't live in the South East anymore so this weekend I'm available, I doubt it will take long to iron our differences, I can be a bit more flexible on times and very flexible on where we meet.

The alternative is that you come to the North East and we'll have a chat face to face I can make myself available at any time.

Am I allowed to like this post? Because apparently I shouldn't like other people's posts. Oh wait what's that I've twisted what blue daze said ah well learned it from him.

Again i don't think what he said wasn't calling you a proper supporter. If anything he was saying you're a more selfish football fan. Which is fine nothing wrong with that.

If you weren't such a sensitive little soul you'd have read the post properly.

I've not questioned whether you are a real fan or not, I've said that you care about winning at all costs, compared to others.

Is someone tired and a bit grumpy today?

Again, I shouldn't have let it even register but the passion and connection I have to this club is dear to me. From growing up going to the matches with my family, to going with mates to being able to take my Dad to see us lift the title on Sunday, 21 years after he took me to my first FA Cup Final, that connection is part of me.

Like I said though, I shouldn't have let anything ShedPensioner said to me bother me.

Fact is winning isn't all that matters. It wasn't even a realistic prospect when I started going to matches. What's key for me is that this club is part of my family, going to the Bridge is part of my routine and my mates that I've been going to games with for years are some of my best friends.

And typing that out makes me realise that it's something that you and Shedpensioner and a few others who hav had pops at me will never have. Why was I upset again?  :laugh2:

Can this thread get back on topic and the playground stuff be left there ?

I don't think it's been ruined, I think the world has moved on and commercialism and the pursuit of an extra penny here and there was always going to change things.

I like it more now, I like the way the sport is truely global as a result - let's not forget that many teams overseas fanbase is built through the Champions League.

Many small countries clubs won't really get any healthier as a result of them being in the  Champions League - you have to realise that the attraction to sponsors would diminish and the revenue would be nothing like it is today.

Agree with all of this, especially the first bit and the last point.

What we have now is arguably the greatest competition this sport has ever seen. With the growth of the Premier League it was always likely that the League Cup would lose some of it's importance, and the Champions League has increased that effect.

But I don't think we're any poorer as a club or as a sport for that. In fact I'd say domestic football on the whole is stronger, more exciting and of a higher level than it has ever previously been.

from my point of view - I don't think the CL has ruined domestic football totally, though I do see where you are coming from that the importance of the cups has been significantly reduced in the last 10 years or so, because of the emergence and the prestige of the champions league. It is much more luxorious to play the likes of PSG/ Barcelona on a Tuesday night than it is to play Shrewsbury in the 4th round of the league cup - fortunately for us we are a team that has been in both of those positions in recent years but if its a case of playing Barcelona/ Real Madrid/ Bayern Munich week in week out or playing the likes of Shrewsbury, Wycombe and Macclesfield in the league cups, then give me champions league football everytime!

For me also, I think the importance of qualifying for the CL only makes the league more exciting and more competitive, as shown by this season where at a time it could have been any 2 from 6 who would secure third and fourth spots in the premier league.

I do get the point this thread is trying to make, but I don't agree that it has "ruined domestic football" I think clubs have naturally shifted to trying to win and qualify for the more elite and prestigious competitions available to them.

English yes, although he quality of the cup competitions has been falling each year it seems.

Have you seen the Dutch, Scottish, Italian or other European leagues though?

If so I'd be absolutely shocked if you think they have improved. It's not just about the English game, Europe as a whole is suffering.

I think the growth of the Premier League has had far more to do with that than the Champions League. It's fantastically marketed and draws in huge revenues, but it also has a far larger domestic fanbase than any of those countries' leagues. That means it has greater resources to suck up the best talents from those leagues.

Italy is a little different because I think they're paying the price for having a more tactical/dull as f**k league. The Premier League is much more action-packed and that sells better around the world.

I think the effect of the Champions League is minimal when you look at just how huge the Premier League (and La Liga and even the Bundesliga) is.

But that does not make it a result of the CL.  You could just as easily blame globalisation and the fact that the big leagues, as a result of the local TV revenue, now attracts all the best players from the diminishing leagues. In the 'old' days it was the Italian League which had the best TV rights and attracted all the players as a result.

I have long since advocated a proper European League. Do away with the Champions League and have a full season where the top teams in Europe compete from August to May. You would have a tournament each summer where the winners of each countries league would compete for 1 or more places in this league and teams are relegated back into their local countries leagues.

Now - that would be serious business.

What a dick response. I love Chelsea Football Club and I'm not jealous or envious of you and you're so called "proper" connection to them at all. I think you need to take a long hard look at yourself and see what an immature prat you are. Anyway done with it and you now.

I see you've resorted to your usual trick of ignoring what was said and come up with your own response.

Yes these days I find it difficult to get to the Bridge, however I still lend my membership out to people on here, I also try to attend a few away days a season, which I find are far more enjoyable and there seems to be less of the pretentious pricks like you at them!

I take it you don't want to come up to the NE for a visit and are to cowardly to meet over the weekend by your lack of reply.
