February 2, 201610 yr Spurs Southampton Aston Villa Over the last two seasons, our net spend has been just over £1 million. I know FFP means amortisation over the lifetime of a contract is an issue, but are Chelsea in an age of austerity? Or are we amassing a large warchest for whomever the next coach is?
February 2, 201610 yr Pat Nevin said a few weeks ago that had heard someone in the club that that balancing the books was the focus. Pat Nevin is fairy realiable and trustworthy.
February 2, 201610 yr Balancing the books? Planning for a new stadium? Maybe we're making the club as attractive as possible for a takeover?
February 2, 201610 yr We have greatly over spent in previous years, that's why we are making cut backs in the past couple of years and obviously for the future until we move into the shiny new stadium, and when it's been paid for. All makes sense to me. Money doesn't grow on trees not even Romans trees. I know he's not hard up for a bob or two, but he wants the club to be self sufficient financially which is sensible.
February 2, 201610 yr Author Pat Nevin said a few weeks ago that had heard someone in the club that that balancing the books was the focus. Pat Nevin is fairy realiable and trustworthy. That does seem to be only conclusion that can be drawn from this and that presents an interesting issue. With glaring holes in the squad and no money to fix them, and also no expendable assets anymore because we sold most of them over the last three years, what exactly is the aim of this club now? It's probably not trophies.
February 2, 201610 yr Author A new thread to discuss net spend. Arsenal behaviour. Not spending any money and hoping to scrape top four each year whilst building a new stadium. Arsenal behaviour.
February 2, 201610 yr Not spending any money and hoping to scrape top four each year whilst building a new stadium. Arsenal behaviour. Yeah, except we won the league just last year.... Arsenal behaviour? Or are you predicting the future?
February 2, 201610 yr Author Yeah, except we won the league just last year.... Arsenal behaviour? Or are you predicting the future? Living off past achievements. Liverpool behaviour.
February 2, 201610 yr Living off past achievements. Liverpool behaviour. What a joke post. Likening that statement to the scousers.
February 2, 201610 yr What a joke post. Likening that statement to the scousers. He ran out of steam with the "Arsenal behaviour" game so had to change it to try and save face I think.
February 2, 201610 yr Author What a joke post. Likening that statement to the scousers. It was a reference to the chap saying that a reference to net spend was 'Arsenal behaviour'. Both were equally silly points and had nothing to do with the topic at hand. I apologise though for maligning Mcloving.
February 2, 201610 yr Fuk me you've got a downer on the club, I hope for your sake you weren't around when survival was the target along with not going bust and not loosing our home. Yes we're having a dip from where we've been for the last few years but that was always going to happen, like it or not we're not big enough to be top dog forever. Nor are city, yes the next few years might be their turn but so what. We'll bounce back because we're Chelsea and we always have done, all things being equal we'll have a fantastic new stadium a few years from now, on our home turf, fit for the champions. A period of change and regeneration is inevitable, and it's okay. You never know it might even give us a chance to use some of the fruits of Europes best academy.

I actually do agree with you, despite my pessimism. That we might have to use the academy could be one of the bright spots but I think the overarching problems still need to be solved. I think we need a clear direction for where this club wants to go on the pitch. For years it was a more technical, attacking style and we bought in players based largely on that, right up until we tore it all up and hired Jose. To go back to the other thread, we need someone who isn't Roman to be in charge of that much like a lot of other bigger clubs do. Personally I'd like someone who knows this club to be that guy but that hasn't worked out too well for us in recent years. The whole net spend thing is simply me questioning what resources we'll actually have over the next few years. Wasn't trying to sound like a certain Arsenal supporter but when there's obvious gaps in our squad and we don't plug them then surely you have to question the competence of those in charge don't you?
February 2, 201610 yr Our net spending is low, because Jose sold lots of good players. In the 3 seasons Jose was here the club has spent around 283,000,000 pounds, yet people have bitched that is not enough.

Take this summer just gone for example, did we actually improve the squad? What I'm interested in is the level of investment the board are actually willing to put into the playing squad at this particular moment in time and what ambitions they actually have for this club.

February 2, 201610 yr If the club wants to spend money it can even without breaking the bank and keeping our net spend to the minimum, we have amassed a huge amount of players which we just send on loan purely for this reason. For instance if we sell Cuadrado, Moses and lets say van Ginkel we can bring in someone for £40m with no net expenditure. And we have 30 players out on loan.
February 2, 201610 yr Author A business trying to balance the books. Who'd have thought it? If that's the case then this becomes the norm in the future and the club (and us supporters) really have to readjust the expectations that we have. Some seem to think we'll just waltz back into the top four when we appoint a new coach. It may be tougher than that and we may need to continue selling assets to balance the books.
