Dorset-esque post incoming, although not written with quite the same eloquence.

As ever with transfer windows, Chelsea are inextricably linked with anything that moves so long as there's a journalist from one of the rags within half a metre of the internet. The usual high prices are bandied about, £40 million for him, £50 million for him etc. It's hard to gauge exactly where a 'reasonable price' lies these days, especially when a club like Chelsea are involved. Over the last decade it is more than fair to say we have spent a fortune on poor investments, but pre-FFP it was never an issue. However, it is definitely interesting to note that whilst Chelsea are indeed still one of the richest clubs in Europe, and the world, with the new TV deal and a wealth of other sources of income being pushed to all the clubs in the PL, our spending power has become on par with a good number of clubs in the league.

Many forumers have mentioned that the prices being mentioned for various players seem excessive and insane, which isn't necessarily wrong as these are speculative prices and each player will no doubt appear different in each other's eyes. However, one thing that can clearly now be seen is that although inflation has played a factor, players which may have been seen at £30 million before are clearly now 'worth' £40 million when you factor in the added income to the PL clubs.

I think that some of us need to reconsider our opinions of players and not be put off by a price because it is seen as too high. 40 is the new 30 folks.

Can I ask, you registered six days ago but you know all about Dorset and how he posts, so who are you ?

I would actually £50m is the new £30m...and that would be cheap. If players like Morata and Lukaku are quoted at £60

-70m then that's even worse.

It seems like everyone these days is automatically worth a minimum of £20m regardless of their ability.

Undercover journo tosser?

40 isn't the new 30, because you can still get really good players for around £30 million. What's changed is that some players who would have been £20 million 6 years ago are now often going for £30. I don't think the same is quite happening for the traditional £30 million+ players, what's happening is those players are all over the place and are priced based on the individual circumstances of the buying and selling club, so we get Cesc and Costa for abound £30  which are great deal in this market, but Man U's desperation and wealth have driven the Pogba deal to insane levels, Bale who is not over twice as good as the average £30 million player when he was sold is not worth the £80 million or whatever.

Then when you consider things like price tag pressure, using finances inefficiently, squad harmony, things get even more risky for overpaying. The standard of the Prem has declined because clubs are not having to use their finances efficiently, hence regular embarrassments in Europe these days.

With the increased competition in clubs spending, we really just need to lay down the money and spend without worrying too much about FFP. Sure we can't be going too mad but the days of being able to haggle over minor fees are gone. Just pay the money and be done with it otherwise we risk other clubs coming in and snatching them. Much like we have to done to other clubs (Pedro, William).

What have you done with Dorset?!

It's clearly a Stephen King's Misery scenario....Dorset locked in a basement writing posts against his will.....

I guess it's possible he's just been lurking for a while, although it does seem strange.

Still around, Gem, but very busy - if you check out when and where another sport’s British Championships are being held this year you will understand why my Shed End visits are currently fleeting, with posts even scarcer than they have been over the years. That said, I’ve just read DB’s lengthy contribution to the Romelu Lukaku thread (up to his usual high standard, if running contrary to my own view on Diego, a striker of infinitely higher quality) so perhaps Douglas MacArthur’s famous quote applies to old posters as well as old soldiers - we are simply destined to fade away for a while, as opposed to dieing out altogether.

Incidentally, no idea who Plebmathon is, though I’m sure this honest admission wont sway Stevo in his belief that we are both undercover journos with a certain predilection.

We still have our principles, our max bid tends to be in the low £30m region even as time goes on, not sure how much longer it will last though.

Torres is a one off for us and probably scared the board into making similar mistakes in the future.

Personally I see nothing wrong with that unless we're going to use that amount for the likes of aguero/suarez then of course it's petty

I think 50 is the new 30 instead of 40 these days.. It happens already, we all may need to adapt..
