Funny you say about the Rec / Wreck we used to say that too about a local park and I had never thought about the proper names.

I also remember going over the park from about 7yrs onwards after the FA Cup final for a kick about too.

Agreed . The 'going down to the park' after The Cup Final and Scotland v England was very well attended. In fact we used to split it into two age groups.

Well, 'the best fighter' and his mates tended to 'organise this.

Or the person who'd brought the football(s) along.

Remember when I was 11.not being allowed to start in the older game.

So I picked up the match ball and walked off the pitch. It was my ball.

A quick 'discussion' arose.  "If he goes home with the ball, you'll get a doing !"  :PDT_nunu:

'Discussion' over I was shouted back, allowed to play in the older game and my football  was used as the match ball.

Aha, I remember picking teams and one occasion especially when playing over South London parks on a Sunday in my early 20s.

A funny time was when my cousin said he would come along, thought it was a joke as didn't think he had even kicked a ball. Single child pampered by his mother yet had grown suprisingly to 6'3.

There we were lining up before we picked teams and in the distance we spotted a giant jogging towards us wearing full England kit.

Before I could say anything, Paul said 'He's in my team.'

I had to stifle a laugh.

He was terrible his one saving grace was he never stopped running.

About a year later I was drinking with my cousin's work crowd and one of the older guys was a 'Cockney Red' someone mentioned my cousin playing for them.

I asked about this and he went, 'Yeah, it was a fxxcking disaster. You think he would be good in goal at 6'3 but it was a miracle we were just 1 goal down at half time!

He added a fxxcking pigeon could have kicked the ball further' and shook his head.

Anyway he might have realised shortly after he wasn't going to find a team to play in and took up running and one other thing, he decided to support Spurs!

A bit different but ski-jumping at Wembley.

Image may contain: bridge, sky, outdoor and water

Cue the jokes about Harry Kane practising his diving.

Never seen that picture before . Did they not find any snow ?!

Looks like 1950s when picture was taken. Before they covered the terracing behind the goals.

I thought that you were going to end by saying that your cousin was actually a British international runner !.

Found this. The ski-jumping took place in June, 1961. Fifty tons of artificial snow was used.

Aha more like Forest Gump, though he did do charity fun runs for a while.

He has done ok in life, was a Postman in the 90s and now is a Salesman in Europe, don't ask me what sounds all very Green re Carbon offset initiatives.

It’s the first Cup Final I remember.

After Cup Finals all the local kids used to go down the park for a twenty aside game. By far the busiest afternoon/ evening down the rec of the year.

Ps I used to think it was called the wreck because it was such a sh*t park, not realising it was short for recreation ground. ( I’m sure it was the same everywhere- when the council cut the grass word spread like wildfire- it used to get that long they needed a combine harvester to chop it down)

After one Cup Final - I can't remember which one - me and a few mates went to a local park for a kick around. One of my mates ended up pulling a hamstring. Having pulled a hamstring a year or so earlier when a human pyramid I was in at a rock festival collapsed I knew the pain he was in.

Can I nominate this for this year's oddest non-footballest sentence :laugh2: ?

Ouch !!

Have also pulled my hamstring. It happened many years ago when I was younger and a reasonable middle distance running.

I was training on the local track running 150 metre sprint repetitions, when suddenly I was doing a high jump personal best !!

After I arrived home from the festival I went to the doctor and was asked how I had pulled my hamstring. I thought that if I told the truth my doctor would call me an idiot and say that I deserved it so I lied and said that I did it running. I don't think he believed me.

As for the pyramid it was more like a tower with about eight people linking arms in a circle at the bottom; on top of them was another tier - the one I was in - and on top of us was another tier; and right at the top was one person. The sole person was a young kid who had been volunteered to go to the top as he was the lightest. In the middle of the circle were three girls who were trying to keep everyone steady. After a while the tower collapsed and every one ended up in a heap. That's when I pulled my hamstring. I've never forgotten the look on the faces of the girls when the tower collapsed. A look of shook.

The things we did in our daft youth. Although I am still a bit daft!
