The State of Our Squad

What the hell has Zappercosta done so wrong to be in the same category as Willian?

I don't think it is much to do with him doing anything wrong he just doesn't do enough right. He was a panic buy because we faffed around getting our proper targets and he proved to be a level below what was needed to either compete with Moses or Azpilicueta.

I think most of us have been saying that the squad needs major surgery. That hasn't really changed, problem is of course that our stocks in the footballing world continue to fall because of mismanagement, so there is a q in my mind about whether we can get upgrades on that deadwood you mentioned Tom. Transfer ban or not.

Increasingly I'm of the view that the ban could be a good thing. Our transfer market work is so poor (and the signing of Pulisic has done nothing to suggest it has improved) that I think we would be better replacing some of our 'deadwood' with youngsters. Reece James is as ready as anyone and I'd suggest that a combination of Mount, Jay Dasilva, Tammy, Ampadu, Tomori even Musonda would make as big a contribution as the dross we will likely buy. Importantly they've all played together for years so would have a sense of camaraderie and understanding that can't be attained on the open market.

I was perusing the RedCafe thread and for different reasons we both seem to be in a similar situation with having a squad comprised of different managers acquisitions that just don't gel that well. It will be interesting to see who comes out of it best and how it occurs. Hopefully it will be us though I cannot see unless the Transfer embargo kicks-in and we bring forward a lot of young players.

Sell/Release/Return

Eden Hazard (Obviously I don't want to, but I think it's inevitable at this point, so better start planning for it)
Rob Green
Davide Zappacosta
Gary Cahill
[Emerson or Alonso] (Undecided, as Alonso does pop up with goals, but not much else, and Emerson is yet to really show much cause to keep him either)
Danny Drinkwater
Kovacic
Marco Van Ginkel
Gonzalo Higuain
Willian
Baba Rahman
Jake Clarke-Salter
Michael Hector
Tomas Kalas
Todd Kane
Matt Miazga
Kenneth Omeruo
Trevor CHalobah
Dujon Sterling
Jay Dasilva
Ola Aina (Possibly already sold, I can't remember)
Fankaty Dabo
Lewis Baker
Angban
Kenedy
Nathan
Quintero
Pantic
Pasalic
Kasey Palmer
Bakayoko
Musonda
Michy Batshuayi
Izzy Brown
Victor Moses
Alvaro Morata
Lucas Piazon
Olivier Giroud
Jamal Blackman

Total: Probably around 250-300m depending on how good we can negotiate things

Loan Out

Mason Mount [PL]
Fikoyo Tomori [PL]
Billy Gilmour [CH/L1]
Ethan Ampadu [PL/CH]

Recall from Loans

Reece James
Tammy Abraham

Look to Sign

New Left Back - Chilwell would be a good option - only 22 and has impressed me when i've seen him.
Goal Scoring Midfielder - Someone like Ruben Neves, he's only 22 and has a good eye for the goal. He'll only get better and now is a good time to get him, before he joins someone else.
Deep-Lying Playmaker/Defensive Midfielder - Not sure who, but if Zidane doesn't want Toni Kroos and we can get in the top 4 this season so we have CL football to offer, that would be amazing
Winger -
Striker -

Squad for 19/20

GK: Kepa, Cabellero,
LB: Chilwell, [Emerson or Alonso]
CB: Rudiger, Luiz
CB: Christensen, Zouma
RB: Azpilicueta, James
CDM: Jorginho, ?
CM: Loftus-Cheek, Neves
CM: Kante, Barkley
LW: Hudson-Odoi, ?
ST: ?, Abraham
RW: Pulisic, Pedro

With Hudson-Odoi's injury and him being out for a while, we may find ourselves having to keep Willian for another year, to cover that position.

Agree with most of that, although Ruben Neves would be more of defensive midfielder, than a goal scoring midfielder, he scores a fair few from set pieces, but not a great deal from open play. He is quality though, I wanted us to sign him before he went to wolves, not sure wolves would sell him now though.

Chilwell is a good shout too, I also think Tierney could make the step up from Celtic. Personally I would go for Telles from Porto, great delivery, and he has a buy out clause which could be important, since teams will have us over a barrel with a transfer ban coming up.

You nutters want to sell/release 25-40 players in a single window? ?

Most of them are players who have been out on loan for years, why bother keeping hold of them year after year?

You know it makes us a lot of money right? With the added bonus that if any of these wonderkids actually turn out to be amazing then we already own them. What's the point in selling them all? Most of them won't have realized their full potential value yet, so we get a bit of cash back and lose the advantages of the system. I don't understand why anyone would want to clear them out for basically peanuts.

Pretty much all the ones I listed have been here for about 4-5 years and been on countless loans. If they were going to become world class and either break into our squad or earn us tonnes of money, they would have done it by now. Can you honestly name anyone on my list, from the loanees, who you think is worth keeping around and loaning out yet again?

They are changing the rules come 20/21 to limit the number of non-domestic loans a club can have so the club might think about trimming the numbers a little. Let's be honest, some of them are not a great standard.

I'm amazed the club have kept so many tbh. It does make us money but can you imagine having 40 players running around on the first day of pre-season on top of the 25 or so squad we already have. And the resources it must take to sort all their loans out. PLUS the fact Marina is juggling that with the the rest of the day to day runnings of the club. Is there any wonder we've been buying naff players for the first team.

With a lot of the list I agree but unfortunately it’s not possible in one window. Maybe in a computer game! Would expect more money for 30 odd players with Hazard going for at least 100 million
