Posted October 3, 200717 yr is he still terrible? is he our new zola? are we losing JM but gaining a lionel messi? he looked terrible with his newfound "freedom" last couple of games, but against Valencia, he looked like the winger we have always desired, for the most part.. very exciting in manby ways, perhaps all is not lost after all, JM joey could have been an unfortunate byproduct of the rest of the team playing jose's way, ie. built from defence or was this just his night? will we be too quick to praise him if he still hacks people, doesnt help in defence, and loses the ball on sunday.. what will happen to the insofar outstanding form of SWP if joey gets the right wing spot? ooohhh
October 3, 200717 yr He's a can't pass, can't tackle, no discipline, showpony. That's a bit harsh. I thought he did a couple of good things tonight.
October 3, 200717 yr joey could have been an unfortunate byproduct of the rest of the team playing jose's way, ie. built from defence Well for a start we played almost exactly as we would have done under Mourinho and showing the same spirit. So I don't think that had much to do with it. It's not as if he never played well under Mourinho. Most of my recent complaints have been about his play since Jose left. No doubt tonight he was better.

October 3, 200717 yr I loved every minute of Joe out there tonight. Proper footballer playing with his head up and trying things. Mikel on the other hand.....did you notice the wavy arms Just? I don't think he's earned the right to wear Jimmy's crown just yet.
October 4, 200717 yr We played like a Mourinho team against Valencia (well second half), Joe Cole played well tonight and he played well that night too. Joe has actually played well under Jose before although the way some carry on you think he was regularly beaten with a tyre iron every weekend by Jose as punishment for showing too much flair. This was his best performance of the season and better than the last few games (ironically without Jose) when he's been so-so at best. Lets see how he does over a few more games before crowning him officially our saviour shall we. For me that accolade always goes to Drogba.

I don't think he's earned the right to wear Jimmy's crown just yet. Mikel does worry me. Plenty of ability but way too much attitude for one is so unproven. We hear about this player and that player getting regular bollockings - he looks like he definitely needs one from time to time.
October 4, 200717 yr what will happen to the insofar outstanding form of SWP if joey gets the right wing spot? I think people were getting a little carried away with SWP's early season form. I'm not saying his form wasn't a huge improvement on what we'd seen from him before but to describe it as "outstanding" is way OTT. As for Joe, I've said it all along, the lad has so much sheer ability - it's been criminal seeing it all go to waste. The showboating may infuriate some, and if it got to the stage where he was over doing it and kept f**king up, then fair enough, criticise him for it. But the modern game is crying out for players who can offer something different. Who, in all honesty, would want to watch a team of athletic robots (it was beginning to get a bit like that IMO over the last couple of seasons). But I for one, want to see a player hold onto the ball a bit longer (within reason) and not off load it like a hot potato every time it comes his way. I want to see a player commit defenders. Go on a dribble. Put a defender on his arse. Execute an inch perfect pass with the outside of his foot. And that's what he does. He will never be a Messi or a Ronaldo as he doesn't have the pace that they have. But he can be just as effective and hopefully we will see that with the run he is now getting in the side. I am no great fan of our new coach, but to his credit he does appear to be showing a fair bit of faith in Joe and has certainly given him a lot more freedom than he ever got with Jose. As long as he doesn't abuse that freedom totally, that can only be a good thing as there are some players that should never have the shackles kept on all the time and be over disciplined.
October 4, 200717 yr The best thing about tonight wasn't just Joe scoring and playing the ball of the season it was Avram keeping him on the pitch for 90 mins

Just is completely right though, once a show pony always a show pony Pele said about Joe Cole that he was a very very good technical player, and he played like a Brazilian. The only problem was he chose the wrong times to do his showpony moments, and that if he could learn to choose the times to do the tricks (when you are winning) and the time to keep possesion, he would be a great player. This was years ago, I think Joe has improved to that level, he definately was there 1 year and a half ago, when we all thought he was the best thing since kentucky fried chicken. Anyway point is there is nothing wrong with being a show pony, as long as u choose the correct moments to be one.
