I really dont know monty!?

You look at the league position and you cant help but be opimistic!

But then I look at Grant and I just dont have any faith in the bloke....

...I'm not going to get carried away or be over-optimistic.

I dont want to get my hopes up just yet.

The idea of beating Sp*rs at the l*ne on Wednesday night is enough to contend with at the moment.

ha ik, just looked at the table myself. There's a very good chance of winning this, as long as we don't lose or draw we actually do have ashot. If Arsenal and United lose one game, we go up on top. I don't know the actual dates, but the last "difficult" teams are only utd and arsenal. Maybe Everton.

Mourinho had a far worse point-to-game ratio than Grant, so if we don't win it this season, despite being in a good position now, I think it'd be harsh to put the blame firmly onto Grant.

I'm quietly confident that we at least have a chance of winning it this season, I think we'll probably (and hopefully) catch up with Arsenal, but Manchester United is an entirely different matter unfortunately.

Of course we can, but I really believe we must win against the Mancs for that to happen... It's at the Bridge, who says it can't? They've got Liverpool, Boro away (no mugs), Blackburn, US, The Villa... Not easy teams to say the least. Spammers...

Lets just start by focusing on Spuds midweek.

It's in our hands to go on and win it, of that there is no doubt.

Just think for a second though if we do go on and win it, with all the injuries, disruptions, ACN duty departures, Mourinho departure fall out, media on the clubs back, unpopular manager, etc, etc, etc, it will surely be our club's greatest triumph in the Abramovich era yet.

Of course it is do-able but we have to beat the big teams and Grant hasn't exactly excelled in that department has he? But I am quietly optimistic as I think we should be in our position but its nothing to shout about, I hope we just sneak up and win it and shut everybody up and I agree it will be a massive achievement and it would be brilliant to win it but better than Bolton? I don't think it will be, that was the most unbelieveable feeling ever and especially after going so long without and I don't seeing that being topped anytime soon or perhaps ever icon_wink.gif

It won't be easy, and we sure aren't the favorites, but that would make it even sweeter. Probably even sweeter than winning after 50 long years, because that year we started off knowing we will do it, while this year even the Chelsea supporters have doubts. I still believe. ::Scalf::

We could yes but we are relying on both Arsenal and Man Utd slipping up - I can see one team doing it but not both.

You are also then relying on us not slipping up at all - there is literally no margin of error from our side either don't forget.

Can you really see us winning every single game almost?

I can't and we are going to have to pretty much do that to beat the two above us and win it.

Not impossible but I just don't think it's very likely.

Based on what we have seen since the Eduardo injury (I wonder how long it will take people to pick up on the fact that it has only taken one injury for the wheels to fall off the Arenal wagon) I can see Arsenal slipping up more than a pregnant woman in an unkept, over crowded maternity ward.

For me the crunch game is Utd at the Bridge. If we can get to that game with the same gap there is between us and Utd that there is now and then tet a result there and I will start to get very very excited about our chances.

I think he is referring purely to results this season under the two managers ethical however I disagree with his sentiment.

If we fail to win the league this season then we should look to Grant and ask questions. However on the flip side if we do win it then I can't for one second buy into this concept that it has been despite Grant and, even more far fetched, that Jose deserves the credit.

If that's what he meant then he's right. But as mourinho was only in charge for six games its a meaningless stat.

Otherwise, I agree with you. Credit if we win, brickbats if we lose.

My main concern is that we have to play, and beat, Man U & Arsenal at home and Spurs, Everton & Blackburn away.

I really hope we can do it.

I agree it is a meaningless stat. Comparing where we were after a handful of games to where we are in March is far too simplistic, just as it was when Peeking Duck argued that Grant had taken us backwards because we were more points off the pace in January than we were after 6 games. It is a logic borne out of desperation to prove your opinion rather than rational thought.

This season is predominantly Grant's season. I wouldn't go as far as saying brickbats if we lose but that is because I didn't expect us to win the league this season under Jose either. If we are right in contention but fail at the last hurdle then I will think feel that is what I expected of this season. However if we fade away and end up 10 or 12 points off the chase then I will be very disappointed.

I didn't expect us to even be in with a shout when Jose and the club parted ways. So, I'm impressed by our place in the league standings.

However, I do NOT believe we will win the league (it's a self-preservation thing). Of course, on paper we are in with a good shout. However, I too do not have confidence in Grant's leadership when we face up to the top 4-6 teams in the EPL. Starting with Spurs at WHL, I think we could draw or lose just as easily as we could win. Then against Arsenal and particularly Man Utd, I seriously doubt that we'll be able to pull out the wins when we have to. They will be some crackers as games but I simply do not have the confidence we'll win and anything less would not be enough.

I'd love to be proved wrong, however.

Cheers,

Butch

Isn't it Newcastle last day of the season??

I certainly hope so,cos we got a big jolly planned in geordieland after the game.

We should be alright up there.

Yeah weve played Blackburn away.

I think our run in is a tough one. Everton away will be touch and go, Man City have good record at home and even though we used to win for fun at WHL im scared about Wednesday.

And then of course we have those two home games. My heart tells me we are playing Arsenal at a good time and we should really get stuck into them , and when was the last time Utd scored at SB ? However my head tells me we will get two points max from those games. I think if we are going to win the league we need the full six points. Yes im speaking as a glass half empty type of person but from what ive seen i have nothing to tell me Grant will be able to match up against Wenger or Fergie.

Like Butch however, it would give me great pleasure to be proved wrong.

This time next week we will for sure know a lot more about how legit our championship challenge is.

Also agreed it was a meaningless stat, I was just trying to say that under Grant we've done very well in the league so far - a lot better than anyone probably expected. I just didn't like the way people in this thread are so quick to pre-empt that we're not going to win the league and that it's all Grant's fault, personally I think we're doing really well, but there you go.

One step/game at a time boys and girls.

I agree with Butch - I think that 2nd spot given 4 draws for the Arse is definitely on (I mean a month ago who could have realistically thought that they'd draw 4 in a row and against fair to middling teams - top game by the way Marky Schwarzer). But to suggest given our run in that we can overtake Manure - I just don't get that feeling. I think some of this enthusiasm may have come about because we had a comfortable win against Derby and Manure only got the draw against them on the weekend (albeit that they had numerous other chances to convert). And I suppose if we beat spuds, the arse and manure who knows? Wishful thinking though. Time for the Panda (and the players of course icon_wink.gif) to shine now we're at the business end. Let's see where were at come Sunday avo (well 4.00 am Monday for the likes of Qaz, Ozboy, Brian et al and me). If we've got 6 more points then, well, maybe I'll give the impossible dream more credence.
